BMW M50 Block Update! The Cost of Machine Work

My BMW M50 (M50B25tu) block is back from the machine shop! In this video I wanted to show you guys what kinda work can be done to a bare engine block in order to prepare it for new or used parts (e.g. forged pistons, connecting rods, etc.). I ended up getting the motor resurfaced, line bored, freeze plugs replaced, honed/bored out for larger diameter pistons, and hot tanked! The price I paid is saved at the end, good junk of change but I want to give you guys the honest amount on every penny I put into this motor! No idea when new parts will be purchased, but I'm always open to suggestions on the next steps with new parts! Thanks for watching, cheers!

That was a really good price 😱👍🏾👊🏾, I hope I find something in that range, here in Miami. I want to go up to 3.0, may be 3.2 if possible, better valve springs, custom cam, head work, forged pistons, ITB or a good flowing intake, once I get the most NA, may be later in the future I'll put a small turbo if I get bored of the High RPM NA stuff. I been saving and buying things slow over the past 3 years. The iTBs, large throttle body, and full exhaust are super expensive. Almost 3k between both. Am on the last few items. Nice machine work. Keep at it. If you are not going to assemble the block right away at least spray it down with a good preservative. Keep the rust away from that new metal.

So which pistons did you end up using for the 85.00mm. Bore??? Did you go with Wiseco or JE?? Did you build a stroker with an 89.6 mm Crankshaft?

i have m50b25 engine, I am thinking about to put a crank chaft and rods of m54b30 with pistons from Opel Omega thay have a 86mm,with modify original pistons and Remove some Millimeters from engine block, Afraid of high temperature and compression ratio, what do you think of the idea, what do you recommend?

Have you done the research on the m50s to what the issue was in the m50 nv an vanos the m54 s50 an s52s from all the years have a egg shape cylinders walls an if u build one of these motors an do not tq plate it an get the cylinders round you will get blow by an A LOT less life out your build trust I learned the hard way

When resurfacing a block or a cylinder head you ideally want to remove the least material as possible, I’d say no more than 0.005 in (5 thousandths of an inch)

Aren't people making plenty of power on 84mm. bores ? And the head gasket is more robust with more material between cylinders with 84mm. bore.

was your engine already assembled when u brought it to the machine shop? $1163 is a bit high but it looks like they did a really good job, was the top end and bottom end reusable?

+Tyler ford no I had taken it apart completely and plan to reuse as much as I can. Yes the price is steep, but granted I had to get it bored out and then honed to increase the bore size.

There’s a guy on Instagram that recently purchased a girdle from some euro distributor, goes by bmwe36_racecar. I’d ask him! The girdle is really only needed if u want higher than 700hp

That seems really high priced, I don't know if you have many machine shops, or if your area has a high amount of car enthusiasts, but the machine I go to charged me $500 for all that, plus the cam line bore on a V8...

Hey man! I was looking into getting the VAC motorsports frankstein stroker m50 with my bore size choice. I was considering the b30 parts swap but really not sure about where this engine build will go. Simply can't afford the parts I need 🤷🏻‍♂️

you can’t go wrong with either! Just stick with the best deal you can find, as the majority of the parts needed to hold boost are around the same price.

nope,,i have a 2000 e46 323ci with m52tub25 engine and its aluminium with iron sleeves.and dual vanos.

@@08halit from 95 to 98 e36 m52 for EU market have alu block with nikasil... Read on internet, m52 problems with nikasil. In UK and USA they were with iron sleevs...

agree and they changed it from 99 upwards to ironsleves,,think it was the sulfur problem for nikasil sleeves that made em change it.. in some way im lucky to have them ironsleeves in mine but unlucky my car just puts out 170hp..i mean a new mod vw golf diesel pulls away from me or i have hard time with it..for years now i have been thinking of swaping my engine or turbo it,,but havent taken the step..closest thing i was to buy was a new b58b30 engine with gearbox,,i bid and won the bid but couldnt find a place that would make the swap..now im looking around and like how they make stage 3 for the n54 with twin turbos,, and i think why not make similar set upp but for the m52 vith twin turbo similar to the n54.. i know they sell diy manifold with bends. but but

Pawinning you didn't get ripped off, just depends if you take your engine to a dirty/sketchy machine shop that still does quality work ($500) vs a machine shop that has brand new machines and is very organized. Mine should be around $1000-1200 and I got the head and block decked, bored to 86.5mm, crank balanced and polished, valve job on head, and a bunch of stuff media blasted and cleaned up
