R1250RS owner here. I bought it as a daily commuter/touring have covered 3500 miles I didn't want a GS for the larger size, higher price and everyone has one. Kickstand is perfectly OK. I love the fact it's low to the ground after a SuperdukeR. Tank range for commuting is 190miles on a run an easy 200+. I put a taller screen on mine because of wind buffering it was deafening now it's silent. It's just beautiful to ride, all day in total comfort.

@ 195cm tall I have a higher screen. Sorry but the GS/GSA is not a nice bike in comparison. The RS will carry as much and as 99%of the time is Io buitumen there's zero need for GS and it'll cope with the odd dirt track. 😀 With a full complement of RS Exclusive extras and a couple of extra comfort parts it's as pricy as a GS/A and username Kate your pretty clueless on bike handling, and your road riding lines are not good 😉

@@Roger101Watson - Thanks for your comment. I’m 1.76m so about 1/4” taller than you and found the same with the stock screen. So I bought the MRA vario screen as that had worked well on my old 1200GS but that wasn’t tall enough either. So then I was torn between the Givi and the Puig screen which I’m guessing you have. I believe they’re both the same height but the Givi is slightly wider so I went for that. It has stopped the direct wind blast so I can ride at 75 mph with an open helmet but there is still buffeting and also for the pillion. As you are reporting neither, then perhaps the Puig has a different shape which then prevents buffeting? I also fitted some AliExpress bar risers, 2 cm higher and 2 cm back, which I found helped with overall comfort. Although I still miss the sit up and beg position of the GS. What are your experiences?

Stupid question, but what's it like in the rain? I was looking at a 1200rs(I have a gsa and I'm not keen on it) but was worried that a sports tourer wouldn't be that suited for all year riding. Then thought maybe just buy the 1200RS for summer touring and a cheaper 1000 V strom for the colder tours. Woukd love to get your feedback. Cheers

Had an RT, a GSA and now an RS. Also had Ducatis, a Honda fireblade, aprilia rsvr mille’s, a ktm, gpz kwacker, guzzi v50, and loads more bikes over 40 years riding. I’m genuinely surprised to be saying this but the R1200RS sport I now own is the best all rounder I’ve ever owned or ridden. Handles fabulously, is comfy and genuinely flickable although not sports bike-esque, it handles and is planted. Power on the 1200 is more than ample. Sidestand is fine, no problems at all with mine. Screens are rubbish like all bmw screens. Why do they not learn and improve them?. The best screen compromise on these is the MRA vario x screen. Wunderlich marathon is ok but MRA looks and performs better. I agree if buying one buy the bells snd whistles version or you’ll kick yourself. To those looking for one, don’t beat yourself up about a 1200 over a 1250. There’s so little difference in real world riding between them. Fit a remus end can and the 1200 is roughly similar through the mids. Great bikes, hugely under rated. Personally I find them more comfortable and more sporty than the GS as well as more refined thanks to different gearing and revised driveshaft damping. Buttery smooth. Ride one and you’ll never look at another bike. This does it all effortlessly. Fit a mudslinger and crud catcher as they’re a must.

Thanks for your review. Just got my R1250RS earlier this week and your review was one of the things that went into my decision process. It’s an absolutely brilliant bike. So far when filtering in heavy traffic I just think like a cop - calm progress. I don’t mind scooters whizzing past me - I’m not trying to keep up with anyone. The boxer engine is awesome: very civilised at low speed, can push on in any gear and really accelerate when you want it to. The standard seat height is completely fine for me (and I’m tall) - I’m a returning biker and as soon as I sat on it, it felt like home. The side stand *is* sometimes a bit vertical - so I do find myself parking it on the centre stand if I’m parking at an angle where the camber of the road isn’t helping me.

@@claytonsorensen1596 hello Clayton, before buying the RS I have tested a lot of other simular bikes. For me the RS was the best bike over all. Especially the torque capacity and maneuverability and running line of the bike is fantastic. In the meantime I made some adjustments. Such as a higher windshield, risers, lowered foot pedals placed in front of the passenger, this from the brand Wunderlich. In addition, an extra mudguard on the rear wheel.

Hi Kate, purchased a slightly used 1200rs last year on the west coast and rode it cross country back to New Jersey. Added a larger windshield and risers for comfort. My RT is more comfortable on the interstate but very disappointing in the twisties as the weight and size is a handful. My old K1200RS has a wonderful engine but very top heavy and tried to high side me into oblivion last year. Something I said to her no doubt. Rented a GS a few times to tour out west. Huge bike that probably sells due to image. Picked an 800gs on a tour of the Alps. Nasty oversized front wheel won't turn, very disappointing. Tried the XR and the blasted thing almost cooked my legs, poor gas millage and the engine felt like it was filled with marbles, very vibey. My old K1200RS engine puts that engine to shame.Very happy with the 1200RS, personally I feel it's the most overlooked BMW in their line-up. And happy to host you and a few friends if you want to tour across the pond!

Hey Kate! I totally agree with you after having my 1st GS1250 in November I was going to get the GSA, but chose the GS because more practicality and not wanting to carry that additional weight The low and behold after writing my GS right now it's got 3200 miles on it, that bike is the most nimble and fun Motorcycle that I've ever owned, and I've been writing since 72 It can be the sportiest when I go around the twisties of the local mountains in Southern California, or like 3 weeks ago when I took a 5 day ride through Arizona and some of the back roads and I moto camped, it's the most versatile motorcycle ever! Thank you for your rambling, haha, but it was all good! Keep safe and keep the videos coming and I know this was an old one but I just found your channel this morning

@chriscole9678 3 жыл бұрын
@@billsnell1481 well I haven't ridden a Z1000XS so I can't compare but I find the RS feels particularly good at low speeds / first gear stuff. I am sure it is due to the engine layout giving it a low centre of gravity. It doesn't feel like a heavy bike at all. I have just one criticism of the whole bike - I think the side stand is slightly too long so it feels as though it would be easy to tip over when left on the side stand. Having said that I haven't actually tipped it over so maybe I'm worrying about nothing!!

Hi Kate, good informative video, thank you. I’ve owned four 1200 GS’S two with lowered suspensions. I have to agree that they are more than flickable, I enjoyed them all. The last one I traded in with yourselves for a R1200RS ICONIC. I know it’s not the 1250 but everyone is aware that the engine is an improvement over the 1200. That being said , other than the new TF dash , I have most of the modes and upgrades as the one you rode. I have been round the coast of Ireland on it twice, to my sisters in Seron Spain (via the euro tunnel and France) twice and a tour round France as well. One of the trips to Spain was a return journey of 3260 miles. Outward we had two overnight stops and rode the trip in three days, relaxed for four days and the return was over two and a half days. Bit long winded I know but this is an example of the bikes real capabilities, it eats the miles quickly and it has the best and most comfortable seat of any bike I’ve ever owned! My GS on a trip to France left me with a numb backside and groin cramps but I never could get truly comfortable on any of them. Chassis wise I have had no problems, engine I had a slight water leak from the pump, and some of the paint started to crack , dealt with by Williams with no questions and to my satisfaction. I don’t know if the 1250 is the same but my engine took a lot of miles to be free it’s now running beautifully, it’s always been good but now it just wants to go. I’m 5’ 7” and have short legs 29” I fitted Wunderlich bar risers and that made the fit perfect for me and I get the balls of both feet on the ground at a stop. It is heavy and with the boxer motor it’s always going to be but it’s only ever a problem turning it round in my garage , that’s a small price to pay for what I consider to be the best sports tourer I have owned and ridden.

Hi Stephen, useful post. I've always liked adventure style but don't go offroad. Had a CB500X, now have F750GS, but I'm drawn to this for my next bike rater than a GS. Seat comfort and wind noise reduction very important to me. I have tinnitus so want to protect my hearing as much as possible but I believe there are good after-market screens for this bike (I have a Givi airlfow with an extender on my F750GS). Test-riding later this week. Feel I have to ride the Kawa Z1000SX too, £5K price difference makes it worth a test ride. Cheers

Thanks for the review Kate , I quiet enjoyed it. I live in the heart of Naples Italy where the roads are full of holes and bumps very narrow up and down alleys and a lot of filtering. I was strictly a sport bike rider until moving here from Florida but found riding a ZX10r in this city torture. I bought an F800GS thinking it might be ideal for these roads but I had 2 main issues with the 800 first the height of the bike even with the low seat put me in situations where getting my feet on the ground at 5’8”was iffy . The second issue was smile factor , it just wasn’t there. In 2016 I test road a R1200 and was very favorably impressed. Finally after seeing many reviews like yours for the last two years I purchased the R1250 RS for 2021. Although I have only just turned 1000 kilometers and most of my riding has been in the city I’m loving the bike more and more on each ride. The power is so much more usable than anything I’ve ever ridden and she makes me smile. Even though the boxer seems wider than my 800 , the RS is actually much easier to filter. The number one large displacement bike sold in Italy is the big GS and for taller riders It may be the better choice but for shorter riders like me the RS is the ticket. Thanks again for your entertaining review and keep the shiny side up. Rickey Mooty

Nice bike. I used to own the 1200 RS (before it was stolen) and really liked it except for two things which I changed. It needed risers as the positioning gave me wrist ache on long journeys and the placement of the satnav.

Hi Kate, good review. The RS has a place in my heart ever since I borrowed a demo bike when my RT went in for some warranty work. Being shorty I found the ergonomics suited me better than the RT. Though there's not a lot of difference from the RT with it's seat on the low setting, the width of the seat on the RT robs you of a little leg length. Regarding residuals though, I found the "bells & whistles" do not provide added value when you com to sell. The extras on my RT were dismissed almost with a wave of the hand and made little difference when I traded it in. My advice therefore would be to spec the bike how you want it and enjoy the extras - just don't expect to get your money back.

Good review Kate. I have a 2016GS & 2020 1250RS (also 2007 1200R), all different in their abilities & all good, very good. I agree that the RS's kick stand is a little tall. The GS is more flickable & nimble than the RS. The old 1200R is also a lot of fun to get around on too. Unfortunately I will have to part with my GS as bursitis in my hip (I am approaching 70) makes it a wee bit painful throwing my leg over. Kate, I love your transparency & honesty in the reviews, keep up the good work. From the Land Down Under.

Kate, I have both an RT and an RS. After being off a bike for nearly 20 years, I bought an RT, something I had been dreaming about for decades, then quickly finding I was over my head. I bought an RS to get some seat time that has helped me get used to the RT. I use my RS around town, and the RT for touring. Something I never would have done without the confidence I got on the RS. It just does everything a person could want. Nothing stupid.

Hi, I recently found your channel and I'm enjoying your reviews - thanks. I'm looking to replace my elderly F800GT and after something more engaging. I previously owned a Sprint ST1050 and I can see the R12500RS as a good, up to date, option. I'm only a tad taller than you so appreciate your insight from that perspective. I've also considered the F900 XR but I see a huge jump in general value/quality comparing BMWs larger bikes to the mid range options. The R1250RS is just so much better value/equipped than an F900XR. The low seat option looks ideal.

As I'm in the process of purchasing the R1250 RS, and this video came to mind. Upon revisiting it, I was delighted by the clarity with which you explained why one might choose the R1250RS over the GS. Kate, to the best of my knowledge, you were the first person I've encountered who articulated the differences between these bikes in such a straightforward manner, great job👍. I wholeheartedly agree with your insights🤩, particularly regarding the significance of factors like rake and wheelbase, which truly distinguish the riding experiences offered by these two models. Your ability to convey this information is commendable, and I want to express my appreciation for your hard work. Keep up the excellent work, and please continue to provide the valuable insights that enthusiasts like myself crave. Thank you for your dedication and for sharing your expertise💥

Again, another great video Kate. You asked for feedback from the owner's of RS. I have the 2020 R1250RS Option719 with Remus, panniers, helibars, and GPS. I have owned 12 other bikes in 7 years, ranging from Honda cruisers (4), Triumph Thunderbirds (2), ST1300, Trophy SE, R1200RT LC, K1600GT, Yamaha Raider S (still have) and now the RS. The RS is the most enjoyable bike of all. I do not do off-road, stay on pavement, not in to extended long range touring and camping. I don"t have a problem with trailering the bike to a destination and riding the twisties, "Tail of the Dragon", The Guantlet when time is critical. This RS will do it all better than any of the others. The RT was too hot, the K1600GT was heavy, the cruisers were uncomfortable after 150 miles, etc. I can ride the RS all day, in the heat of Georgia, take a little gear, and maintain a presence with most spirited riders. I am comfortable and happy. BTW, the Triumph Trophy SE was the second best bike I have ever owned but became nervous Triumph was discontinuing the bike and values would fall, was time for it to go.

Superb weather protection but too protective lol. Looking forward to my '22 RS !

I’ve had my RS for 20 months now & put 12,000 miles on her, great mile munching machine.. It is low & cramped though for even an averaged height rider like myself, that’s why I have now fitted the sports high seat (finally) makes such a difference - long rides/tours are now much easier on the knees! It does sit up very straight on the side stand your right, but there is a way round that also if you have the electronic suspension fitted, (like on your test bike) I keep mine in the ‘rider with luggage’ setting suspension mode, which raises the bike up a little more, so you then get more of a lean on the stand, if you then pop it in dynamic it will rise up even more on top of that, for yet more lean on those off camber roads that you may need to park on. As for fuel economy I got 57mpg av (or 225 miles per 18L tank full) on a 2,500 mile Tour I did last year. Even if I go out for some very enthusiastic scratching the worst it averages is 47mpg. This bike hustles so well in the twisty’s, I don’t have any chicken strips at all on my rear tyre!.. I’m putting off the GS as a potential next option for the simple reason every man & his dog has one, you don’t see that many RS’s about really, I like the more exclusive feel of riding a bike you don’t come across often out on the road... Sounds absolutely fabulous (and looks way better) with an aftermarket LeoVince silencer too 👍🏻

I rode the R1200R for a while and loved it to bits, very nimble comfortable and fast when you like. I've been toying with the idea of switching to the RS but could never figure out in what way they ride that much differently. Surprisingly not many f2f comparison between the two so curious to know your views besides one not having fairings and being more upright than the other. Thanks for the review, great fun as usual ;-)

The R has a shorter diff ratio so around town and off the line much quicker. The RS is going to feel slightly lazy unless you're doing motorway miles.

@nancyelliot6324
@nancyelliot6324 3 жыл бұрын
@@billsnell1481 the weight is quite low so for me I find the balance really good and slow speeds are fine, I wouldn't necessarily rush to do a bike gymkhana on it, but this is the first bike in quite some time that I feel I could ride a u turn. I wanted a bike to tour on so I went with the faired option, otherwise I would have gone for the naked as it does just have the edge on finer handling, but that's entirely personal and that's like me saying I'd rather have a stripped out sports car vs one with all the comforts. So yes it's a heavy bike, but it doesn't feel it one bit.

I see all of the rs models if they go through the tft menu it has the sport display. I dont have that. I also got this austin yellow color and added all the packs to it. So I thought it should have that mode on the tft. The date on manufacturing is march 2021

I have the RS which came from Williams, its the optional 719, it is the first boxer engine I have owned and second BM which was the XR, the only two annoying thing to me are the 12v socket, and the fact you have to remove the exhaust to get the rear wheel out. Other than that it's a nice place to be.

I had an R1200RS for two years from 2015, I’ve been riding R1200RT/ R1250RT from 2017 to now. A trip to the local showroom last week has resulted in me going back to the RS (special offer on a nearly new one). My only concern is the screen, will it be high enough for me? The screen on the R1200RS was alright, it’s just that I’ve got used to the gigantic one on the RT. Never mind that, the rocket ship warp speed is what it’s about. You’ll never get me on a GS though.
