I have an XR and at 24,0000 miles got very rattly, spoke to BMW garage and they said to fit the silver cap, the said when it starts to rattle again I will need to replace the cam chain and the cam chain guides, big job. I went with the motorworks manual chain tensioner. I now have 50,000 miles and only had to adjust it once. The silver cap pushes the plunger in a few mill further to increase the tension before the pressure builds, mine is so quiet other owners come up to me to ask why it doesn’t rattle at all.

It’s comforting to know even reputable manufacturers have design issues with their products. Let’s us know that they are human and that even high end manufacturers can be improved on with tweaks of modification. Let’s hope this solves your issue 👍

BMW have loads of issues, but usually get away with it as most people know to get extended warranties so it all gets quietly addressed. BMW and 'engine rattle' would normally make the wallet get nervous.

Hi Craig, it is probably no coincidence that the cam chains can rattle on these as BMW ripped off the GSXR 1000 K5 as their starting point. Gixxers used to love to rattle a bit. On older GSXR's the cure was to fit the tensioner from the 750RR as it had a 0.75mm tooth pitch as opposed to the 1.0mm pitch of the larger engine. This aloud the cam chain to be in a better state of tension and reduced the rattles. I have just stumbled across your vids and am already loving it.

There's a video out were they show how to attach a spanner to your torque wrench. Then depending on the angle of the spanner do a little calculation to get the torque your looking for. Handy for getting in to tight places. I believe it was one of Michael Wallers videos.Bike builder from upstate New York.RMM

Nice bike lets hope thats sorted it. I've got a 600 Fazer that rattles when cold. Quiet once warmed up though. Had tensioner out, wasn't stuck and only half way through its travel. Swapped it for new one anyway. Still does the same thing. Apparently 'they all do that sir'. This is my second Fazer and yes the other one did the same. Fact it only does it from cold start means I can live with it.

hi craig this item should be fitted when the engine done 10,000 miles i believe and its the same on the rr model as well,the rr model has a exhaust valve on the top of the downpipe which when the start rattling that sound is far worse but i,m not sure if your exhaust downpipes has a exh valve at the top on the r model.

“They all do that Mr!” I had a 2014 MT09 that CTC rattled like a good un straight from the box and my current 02 Fireblade does it after every few thousand miles until readjusted. Yam was automatic and blade is on manual CTC. Surely the factories must have the capability to design something far better than what they have just now. My Panigale is the only bike that’s never had the start up rattle- because Desmo. But now they’re moving to chains too on the Multis I believe.

You should have use a spanner and the torque wrench in combination at 90 degrees. If you have never heard of it, have a quick google at what i wrote... Very handy thing to know, when trying to torque something in a tight space.
@peterwait641

@@peterwait641 What I was " told " lol, in college. So long as the the angle is at 90 degrees between the spanner and torque wrench it applies the same amount of torque. In fairness I have never had to do this but... it's 100% cam chain tensioner issues, it's common with hydrolic only tensioners. KTM 4T dirt bikes used to have the same problem & "dirtrix" made a replacement that was hydrolic/rachet type, the rachet part locks it into place when there is no oil pressure from engine not running.

Hi .......... I recently rebuilt the motor on my H6 Subaru. I fitted a temp oil pressure gauge to be sure all was well. Oil pump uses liquid gasket driven by a chain so the timing cover is sandwiched alloy. So this gauge is in front of my face and I was surprised to see how high the oil pressure is using 15W - 40W when cold. When warm it drops 50% ...... So ..... My 1199 Panigale is specked for the same oil and like yours rattles on start up that goes away when warm. There-in lies the problem. Nothing to worry about really. I believe you can get a 0W - 40W ... or something but I bet its expensive. No doubt........ I did my time working on two stroke GT Suzuki's. To put my age in to context we had a brand new X75 Hurricane Triumph (Norton lol) at the shop. Mmmm 1973 ;) I do like you do every day in the workshop ..... Great retirement :) I like your work.

Interesting film, funny how many tensioner designs are weak. I’ve had three Diversion 600s and two needed help to stay tensioned. I’m ignorant of the design on the BMW, if it’s oil pressure that is the media the smaller volume of the new cap is suggestive.

manuals are better and easy to adjust and once you have it adjusted it doesn't need adjusting again until your chain needs replacing, maybe once in between? install manual tensioner, screw in till snug, start bike, back off till it rattles a lil, then tighten till it stops rattling, then go 1/2 -3/4 turn and lock, those engines have a scary valve trail all the way around you are aware of this right? unless they've dialed it down for the S model, you can read the horror stories online

I've bought 2 new bmw s1000rr's over the years and I can honestly say the gsxr 1000 is a better bike and alot more reliable .. I put 32k on my old gixer thou and beat the crap out of it for 2 and half years . I'd take a gixer over the bmw any day of the week just for the fact you can beat on it and not worry, the gearbox was alot nicer ,smoother and tighter than the bm ones . The gixer wouldn't hit a false neutral at all while the Bm's would on a regular basis .....
