BMW X5 E70 35D Oil Service DIY - How Much Money I Saved
Today I complete a DIY or Do It Yourself project oil service on my 2009 BMW X5 E70 35D diesel. I review the tools needed, the consumable materials such as oil and oil capacity and recommended oil manufacturer and weight, and demonstrate in this DIY tutorial. I then compare the costs of the DIY with the last dealer service invoice and share with you how much money I saved. Watch till the end of the video for a link to the video of the dealer invoice reveal.
Now go ahead and SMASH that SUBSCRIBE button and stay tuned for the next great video from Mark Holubetz at ExoticCar PlayPlace.

How did you do a dealer reset after you changed your own oil Mark? If you have a video for that, can you please reply with the link for the rest of us? I've got a 2015 xdrive 35d, but my oil filter has a spout at the top of it. Why would your oil filter be different? Lastly, do you need to add any additives to the gas tank or is that the DEF fluid? Reason why I am asking is because the sales person at the dealership when I was buying the vehicle told me never to let the gas tank go bone dry because there is a fluid that sits at the bottom of the gas tank in a diesel that you don't want to burn off. Any clue of what that sales person was talking about?
@ECPP
@ECPP 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, firstly, thanks for watching and I do share how to do a reset on the end of my X5 Brake change video as on this link kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpCmiXuda7p_apI: . Give that a try. The second question about the spout? Not sure if you mean filter or filler? The filler is pretty typical and just use a funnel whereas the filter housing should be typical as well but might have slight differences, but most of the process should be the same. The DEF is usually added at every oil service at the dealer, so I just do it myself when doing an oil change. If you let it run out, the computer will warn you that you have only X many miles left until you are not allowed to restart your car because emissions laws are strong about running with the proper pollution controls so it is enforced through the computer logic. I always fill the passenger side tank first because that is the active tank and then try to top up the driver side tank which is the passive tank and is just a "holding tank" while the active tank is injected and has a heater built in. As far as running your fuel tank empty, DONT, but it has little or nothing to do with the DEF. Drain out a diesel system and often it becomes a real pain the the a__ to get it primed and running again, not to mention any corrosion, or debris that sits in the bottom may suck up into pump, or injectors and wreak havoc. Hope this helps.

Did you ever calculate fuel mileage for that?? I assume better than the X-5 gas but since diesel is more $$$ than gas wondering if you feel its worth it? Seems in the US people buy Diesel for the added torque of towing, yes always good t 'tinker' and learn abut things yourself, I almost never have my 1996 Grand Cherokee in the shop, I fix/replace everything myself, follow a FACTORY shop manual usually is all that's needed

Hi Jim, I have on occasion calculated but even better I believe the tank is only around 75 litres, and a couple of trips i did with the kids, wife and remaining space full of luggage driving up and down through the Canadian Rocky mountains, managed to stretch this to about 1100 kms or around 650 miles. I was quite surprised for a vehicle of this size, weight, AWD, and full of cargo.
@jeffc6832
@jeffc6832 6 жыл бұрын
I get 25 or so in mixed driving (with some stop and go) with mine, can hit 30 on the highway. Diesel usually isn't much more expensive than premium gas (higher octane is required for turbocharged gas engines), so it is cheaper to run, especially if you plan to keep it for a long time. That and I (personally) just like diesel engines more. Gobs of torque, and they really wake up (and get more reliable) with tuning and emissions mods.

Hey there, I followed your directions and the oil replace went perfect on my X5 e70 35d 2011. But, after I refilled the DEF the idrive information still says I need to refill the DEF. And its giving me a 340mile warning. I did have my mechanic do a reset and he has an expensive $8K coder. I really don't want to have to go to BMW dealer. Any suggestions?
@thomasdickinson834
@thomasdickinson834 5 жыл бұрын
If you have issues with the def sensor not reading the correct level you may need a new def tank. Sensor is integrated in the tank. Luckily there is recall that covers this. Went through this process, it's an expensive job if not covered 3k I think. If it doesn't reset call local dealer and inquire about recall. As look it up online, common issue.
@salanicus
@salanicus 5 жыл бұрын
@@thomasdickinson834 Thanks Thomas. Our X5 is actually at BMW today getting the entire def tank assembly replaces, warranty covering all. One interesting thing BMW North America told me is that they review constantly structural mechanical issues as BMW mechanics report in, and can and do add new issues as warranty when brought to their attention. So I told our guys to make triple sure if a code comes up and it's structurally an engine issue outside of normal maintenance and wear and tear, that they must notify BMW and apply for warranty. Worth noting.

A little late reply but my x5 also had the problem and the dealer said the dpf filter needed to be cleaned? I mean it went away so it worked. 3k to fix the def problem? Might as well use that 3k to do a def delete and not have to worry about it again

Appreciate it! I almost always do my own Maint & I just picked up a 35d. Didn’t realize there was a dipstick there! Question: Do the dealers really bottom drain on this car as there’s a dipstick tunnel to extract/vacuum the old oil out of? I vacuum out the old oil on other euro cars I own (or have owned) like the dealers do on those specific cars. Thinking yes & if so that eliminates a bunch of extra steps & mess.
@paulcruse

I was always told that it is not ideal to vacuum out from the dipstick as you don’t get any swarf out from the sump pan and might also pull some of it up through the engine. Just what I have been told.

Why are you saying you HAVE to use LL-04 oil? Just because a company did not pay BMW a mountain of money to certify their oil does not mean it does not perform the same or better than LL-04 certified oil. Oil certifications are a cash crab and not much else. This is the reason you only see LL-04 on oil from large oil companies. They are the only ones who can afford it. Think about how much Castrol paid them to stick their logo on the fill cap. I am not saying that LL-04 oil is bad and I am not saying non LL-04 oil is good. Just saying that good oil is good and bad oil is bad, no matter the "certification". I have 2 of these (35ds, deleted) and I do not use LL-04 oil.
@jamesduggan5846
@jamesduggan5846 5 жыл бұрын
vseanw If you deleted your DPF system then use whatever diesel oil you want in the correct weights of course. However, if you still have DPF, then you need an oil with low ash to avoid fouling your filters. LL-04 is that certification. Personally I would not risk fouling a DPF with non certified oil, even if it is just a cash grab. Hell, everything in the auto industry is a cash grab anyway.

Sorry, I avoid going to the dealer with our 328 at all cost . . . . . and I'm not talking about the money. We brought our 328 to a local dealer for some simple recalls. We get the car back and the clutch is suddenly engaging differently. Sometimes it's very vague when starting off. Then it gets too grabby in the higher gears. I don't want those monkeys at the dealership touching our car if we can avoid it ever again. I went several rounds with the service rep on this. There was NOTHING wrong with our car mechanically before we brought it in. We get it back and now the clutch is screwed up. I specifically told the service rep the car was a manual and to make sure anyone moving the car could ACTUALLY DRIVE A STICK!.. Apparently that did not happen. She left me a message saying everyone there is trained and competent to drive a stick. Bull! She then said I could bring the car back and have one of the mechanics drive around in it with me. For what? To argue with me and try to convince me that I'm wrong? I've been down this road with other dealers in my other cars and I DO know how the game is played. Idiots at another dealer trashed the engine in my truck and it was running so rough after an oil change, the vibration was numbing my foot on the gas pedal. Then it started to hurt. The pain was so bad, after a few weeks, I could no longer drive the truck and I had to get rid of it. Complete idiots at these places. Do the maintenance yourself when you can. I had another oil change incident with yet another truck I had. Apparently they started the engine and forgot to put oil in it after it was drained, then realized it and shut it down. I got the truck back and the engine was very noisy. I had no proof of what they did. So there was nothing that I could do. That was about at 60,000 miles. The engine needed a major bottom end rebuild at 120,000 miles, as it was making so much noise. There was a great deal of crank shaft end play among other things. It was just cheaper to put a used engine in rather than fixing it. That engine should have gone to at least 200,000 miles without any issues, if those monkeys hadn't wrecked it. I put a used engine in it that had about 80,000 miles on it. Now I have over 200,000 miles on the truck, or over another 80,000 on that second engine with no problems at all.
