BMW ZF 8-Speed Transmission Fluid Change DIY Drain and Fill PPE High Capacity Oil Pan Mod F10 528i

Changing the ZF 8hp trans fluid on my friend's BMW F10 528i with the ZF 8 speed automatic transmission. He is also upgrading the transmission oil pan with a Pacific Performance Engineering (PPE) high capacity fluid pan made of aluminum instead of plastic. If I just drain and fill without removing the pan, can I add full synthetic oil like Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic even though the existing bmw oil is semisynthetic and probably a different color? I know this is a controversial topic.. but just asking anyways😊

I wouldn’t mix two different oils. Try and use the oil in my description or OEM to make sure it is compatible with each other. Good luck 👍

​@Sals_Garage I thought so unless there's a dedicated transmission cooler. If the same pan size it utilized then there's just more fluid to retain temps. I would love to see data from ppe on this.

I would guess the extra fluid will help with longevity since you have less cycling of the same fluid compared to having less fluid, and in this case the aluminum cover will help with extra/better cooling apposed to plastic dissipating the heat.

@@damians8498 I could be wrong but aluminum being a better conductor of heat should absorb the heat quicker from the fluid..I'm no thermodynamics expert but this is me coming from electronics background.

Can I still do mine at 80,000 miles ? BMW n55 motor 535i 2013?

My x3 28 xdrive is at 56k miles.. can I just drain and fill without changing the cover? I'm thinking that there shouldn't be too much gunk in there and the drain should help as well.

There should be a class action lawsuit against BMW (& other manufacturers) for saying that the transmission fluid doesn’t get changed because that’s total crap (like my transmission). My 2009 BMW 1 series 128i convertible has transmission issues and only 116k miles. The previous owner never changed the fluid per BMW and now it shudders in 4th & 5th gears when I drive it in full automatic mode. If I manually shift it drives fine with no shudder. If there has been a schedule to change the fluid and the previous owner had it done this most likely wouldn’t be a problem. Now I’m screwed with a transmission that is not going to last very long. It’s a crime to not have a schedule to maintain it. I read up on this and found that there is no coolant flush, or trans flush, or diff flush or fuel filter that is scheduled by BMW. That’s criminal on the part of BMW. No wonder BMWs have so many issues. I’m sick of auto makers misinforming customers on these maintenance issues. BMW should be forced to either replace transmissions that have issues like mine or replace the entire car. Won’t ever buy another BMW ever again. And good luck selling my car without replacing the transmission!!
