In this video, I talk about how you would go about putting an engine on one of these. It would also apply to putting it on a regular bike.

I appreciate it! These bikes are so much fun! My son and I starting putting them together about 3 years ago now. I mostly build classic cars and trucks but once we got the fever for these bikes, we had to start building them too. We keep a few for our personal use but will sell the others. Let me know if I can answer any questions or help you build one!

These videos are incredibly educational and useful. I am considering building my own motorized bicycle and have found a neat-looking old, I believe Soviet, bicycle. One issue with the bicycle is that it has no brakes and a fixed gear on the back wheel so I would like to change it for a free wheel. However, I do not know what kind of thread it is and I would not like to make any permanent changes. Could you please advise me on how to replace the fixed gear with a freewheel? Also, how do you deal with braking on your bicycles?
@EDGClassics
@EDGClassics 10 ай бұрын
Thank you very much. I’m glad the videos can be helpful. To be honest, I’m not familiar with with the type of wheel and sprocket you have. Some wheels would require a completely different hub. I use 3 different brake systems. The rear drum brake that comes with the heavy Worksman wheels, a front drum brake, and occasionally, a band brake around the clutch.

What did you used for such stylish fuel cap on that tank? Also what hub attachment is it?
@EDGClassics

They are actually brass caps used for for garden hoses. There are several different styles to choose from. The hub attachment is from MB Rebel. They can be purchased on eBay too but make sure it matches the sprocket you’re using.

I usually use one of two motors. I use the Honda GC160 and GC190. They are very dependable, easy to work on, and parts are plentiful.

A 670 has a twin design therefore it can be turbod. May be a little small for a turbo but I think doable. Hard time believe that clamshell will hold up any better than a rag joint with 10 gauge spokes. A milled hub with attached sprocket would be best or a sheeve with belt drive. The disc brake hubs may be too weak or not enough material for a 15 horse motor

The cost depends on what options that I include with the build. Wheels, tires, clutch, and so on can change the price. Send me a Facebook message and I’ll be glad to help you out. I may have one right now that you might like.

Depending on the engines and modifications, the ones I use are between 5 and 7 HP. This is plenty to push these bikes around with an average adult riding.

I get the parts from various places. MB Rebel, Harken, eBay, and so on. It depends on what works for my build and what is cost effective. The engines I normally use are GC190 and GC160 Honda engines. They are just slightly modified to make them look the part.

How do you run your throttle cable
@EDGClassics

I’ve run it a few different ways. On some bikes, I deleted the governor attachment and ran the throttle cable directly to the carb. Others, I’ve run it to the governor linkage.

@@RatherBeRacing technically, you can remove the governor. There is always controversy about this. You can gain HP but sacrifice reliability and sustainability. I’ve done it both ways. My personal bike does not have a governor on it but I don’t abuse it either.

Have you measured as to whether the 420cc singles or 670cc V-Twins will fit in the Harken Frames? I have a predator 670 I bought for my riding mower, but I decided I am moving onto my sailboat. I would much rather build one of or 2 these to throw on the Dinghy and take to shore to shop and explore, etc. Than spend the rediculous price for E-Bikes or E-cycles. These are obviously Much cooler looking, and if you run low on gas you stop at a station and refill. You run low on battery you are peddling back to the boat.
@EDGClassics
@EDGClassics 2 жыл бұрын
I have not measured to see weather those big motors would fit inside the frame. I know they look cool but it’s pretty extreme for small antique style bike. You do you though! The great thing about these bikes is that there are no rules. Make it your own! I do prefer the gas bikes to electric bikes though. I know the electric bikes can be fast but for me, the sound and look definitely look more realistic for an antique tribute bike.

@@EDGClassics hey thank you for your response. Sorry for the late reply. I have been out sailing in places without reliable internet, & KZbin hasn't been a priority. Just got back stateside to avoid the worst of Hurricane Season knock on wood. So I am just seeing it.. I agree the big predator v twin engine is probably overkill. I just had one laying around & I am a big guy. Just shy of 6'5" athletic, former college linebacker, and am coming off of riding big bikes most of my life. I know if I build one the replica would frequently get used as the grocery getter. Stores & shops usually aren't close walking distance to dinghy docks or marinas, & a lot of the places I plan to go with the boat are hilly or mountainous. Me plus a big backpack filled or one of those folding bicycle trailers full of groceries & supplies would make the extra power appreciated. I can always sell the 670 twin, and use a 212 if I order a frame and it won't fit without really having to cut, weld & completely change the geometry of the frame in a jig. It's definitely a much lighter engine for getting the bike on and off the boat. Less taxing on my davits or boom and winches. The 212 is also a very common race-kart engine so there are plenty of performance kits and gearing options out there that make up to and beyond triple the original HP and torque of the stock 212 if I feel I need the extra power. I just figured I have seen a bunch of bikes on youtube using the v twin industrial engines, and I already have the predator 670. As you said it definitely would look cool stripped down in a vintage bike, and they have a nice lope and grunt when carbureted with a dual performance exhaust system. The ones I have heard remind me of the sound of the vintage V twin British bikes when run with no baffles. But the added weight is something to think about getting it on and off the boat.
@EDGClassics
@EDGClassics Жыл бұрын
@@RedwonMactamhais I would definitely do some frame research. Keep in mind that the guys were much smaller back then. The race bikes were driven by guys the size of horse Jackie’s. Im sure you can make it work though. It would be an insane grocery getter!
