This is exactly what makes living on a sailboat so amazing, you don't need to pack up or find a new house, you just pull up the anchor and leave to a new place, country or continent. It is actually what attracts me the most of wanting to live on a sailboat in the future in the first place. Same with the chance to sail to a place with better economy for work or lower costs. Visa is a nightmare in SE asia, I have a child in Thailand and yet I still have to do all the paperwork, every time, even every 90 days reportings.

Good call moving out of that anchorage. “The Sandpeople are easily startled, but they'll soon be back, and in greater numbers” As far as the Visas go. You did everything possible to remain legal. Enjoy the two weeks while waiting for immigration to re-open to explore the islands, experience the beautiful culture and bake more of that amazing looking homemade bread. Yum! Love your work guys. By far my most fav sailing channel & I watch loads. Plan to be out there ourselves in a few years time. Stay safe & well.

@scottlittlewood4527
@scottlittlewood4527 3 жыл бұрын
Damon Danieli Hi Damon, there is a lot of talk here about how scary the incident was. While I agree, if you unpack the motivation behind the raid, the sailors were never in much personnal danger. The raider was after what he could see and he had determined that he had a good chance of successfully obtaining it, undisturbed. We can establish this, because once disturbed, he fled. Further evidence can be drawn from the location and the socio-economic mode of the area. This is fundamentally a poor area. If you plonk a conspicuous pile of wealth in the middle of that, it's no surprise that a problem occurs. I am in no way blaming the sailors, but it's great defence to be aware of how you are perceived by others. This would have been far more scary if the raider had not fled, or if it had happened in the daytime, where the raider had total disregard for discretion, indicating a higher level of desperation. Had the sailors not responded, the raider would have left with what he could take, knowing he didn't want disturb anyone. It's not quite so scary when all that is at stake is some fuel, flip flops and a bag of sweets.

@@scottlittlewood4527 That’s a very smart take on the situation and I think you are right. Certainly, he wasn’t armed or hostile upon being discovered nor did more people board. I’m glad that was all it was and nobody was hurt but in the same token, the potential thieves got off lucky. It could have ended up in a tragedy all around. As they say: “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.
@scottlittlewood4527
@scottlittlewood4527 3 жыл бұрын
Damon Danieli Yes you're right about the stupid prizes! It's always tragic when someone gets dragged into an escalating situation and you end up with deaths, imprisonment and all sorts of despair. I've heard numerous stories where there is tragedy all around and the punchline is "and all for a few dollars worth of items." There are lots of people commenting about guns, spear guns and other hardware. When things get out of control with that sort of weaponry in the middle of the situation, you end up with tragedy, and all for a few dollars worth of items. Do you have any thoughts about action against blatant piracy in broad daylight?

Hello New Subscriber from San Diego / Baja, Mexico...Former Law Enforcement Officer, Day Sailor and fisherman...Love the Episode on the Pirate attack...Very Good information and I would also Strongly Advise against carrying Firearms... Unless you can do so Legally in every Jurisdiction, which is highly unlikely and more likely to land you in Big Trouble with the Local Law...and Unless you are Trained and Prepared to use them... the majority of time your own weapon will be taken away and used against yourself...Obviously the best Defense against Would be Pirates is to Be Prepared and have a Plan...try to prevent them from getting on the boat in the first place...with Alarms, Sirens, bright Spot Lights, a loud PA system telling them to ''stay away the authorities have been notified''... ''you are being Recorded and Broadcasted on the Internet''...Have your own Display of Force such as Flairs, Fireworks and other Alternative Weapons ready to use that may be on board the boat including but not limited to; Flare guns, Spear guns, Hawaiian sling, shark bang sticks, fishing knives, sledge hammer...Tools such as a propane torch or Flame Thrower, nail gun (not that a cruising boat would normally carry a nail gun but if you had one charged and ready for Defensive Purposes, maybe you could convince Port Authorities that it was for work purposes and they would not confiscate it), same with a chainsaw, compressed air Tank with some kind of Projectile ready to fire...and in an Extreme Life or Death Emergency situation a Gasoline Bomb...(Molotov cocktail) is a breakable glass bottle containing a flammable substance such as gasoline/petrol or a napalm-like mixture, with some motor oil added, and usually a source of ignition such as a burning cloth wick held in place by the bottle's stopper. The wick is usually soaked in alcohol or kerosene, rather than gasoline. In action, the wick is lit and the bottle hurled at a target such as the Pirate's boat. When the bottle smashes on impact, the ensuing cloud of petrol droplets and vapour ignites, causing an immediate fireball followed by a raging fire as the remainder of the fuel is consumed. A poor man's grenade if you will could be assembled from household products...MacGyver style...Good Luck, (Disclaimer as I would not Recommend this or any kind of physical resistance against armed Pirates)..Almost forgot my High Tech Security Deterrent. The Drone !!! Fly a drone over the potential Pirates recording their every movement and their Faces with the Idea that they are Identified and the Whole World is Watching Them...again Be Prepared and Mentally Tough to do whatever it takes to Survive...Good Luck

A question that always intrigued me, is about carrying guns in trans-oceanic trips...I read a little, and it seems that there isn't a consensus about that. I learned about problems with carrying guns in countries that do not permit or restrict possession of guns within their territory. However, my immediate feeling is that it is a necessity. You may be hundreds of miles away from the closest destination. A pirate attack might be devastating because you simply don't have the means to defend yourselves. Whenever you have a chance (Q&A? do you guys do?) it would be great if you could address these issues.

I have thought about that too. Ordinarily I would never have a gun but if I sailed waters like those... rifles are easy to get where I live as are shotguns. Basically you have to declare it anytime you enter a port or marina or country, you then seal it with the ammo separately and a police officer or official will come on board, inspect the weapon and your licence and then keep it in a safe for the duration of your stay in port. When you leave you then get it back and sign a paper that's it's still sealed. Varies from country to country and I think it would be a big hassle so most of the time no, but on some routes maybe yes. If you doubt the necessity just watch some true crime to remind you not all people are wonderful. Casual Criminalist I can recommend. More focus on the investigation and gore is avoided and only described when necessary to the plot.

Declare firearms and ammo with your entry documentation. Some countries will request it be securely locked away on your vessel for your duration ashore. Others will take it off your hands, and you receive it back upon departure. I wouldn't sail pirate waters without a 12ga and/or a .45ACP onboard (stainless steel versions, given the maritime environment).

Actually who goes blue water sailing puts himself exactly in that situation, bad weather, boat failure, hitting something in the dark and of course piracy. So who does it must be prepared, but even so blue water cruising is inehrently risky. By the way they was in one of the areas where there is a high risk of piracy, or at least near by. They was lucky as it was not real piracy, only trying to steal some goods and they did the right thing, without over reacting and escalating and leaving the place. How to deal with real piracy is a completely different matter, to react or use firearms sometimes can save you, but other times can get you killed instead of only robbed, I don't feel entitled to tell to other people how they must deal with it.

Glad to see that you are both safe and well though 👍 With the Visa situation, you can only do what you can do, I adopt a principle of not worrying about things outside of my control or influence and you have done as much as you can do. If you have Internet, is their a British consulate that you can at least Email and explain the situation, then save any response, which will show that you have done as much as possible, then it is out of your hands and you can get on with the important task of enjoying yourselves again 😀 Love your videos, been following you for so long now, so keep pushing them out and stay safe.

Joshua Slocum used several pounds of tacks sprayed out on his deck at night. Many that were trying to board his ship were barefoot. Those tacks wrecked their attempts and gave him an alert to being boarded. Just sweep them up in the morning. Easy thing to do that is not a perfect defense.

Hey guys. Stay strong and stay safe. Hopefully you’ll get everything resolved. Would be far easier if they just gave you an extended visa due to coronavirus and said just check out when you leave but I guess that’s too easy. Look after yourselves and stay safe

Is your Aries windvane missing? (its clearly visible in the intro shots which were probably taken some time ago, but around 08:23 there is no sign of it)

It's still firmly bolted to Florence but we have removed the wooden vane to save it from UV and the rudder to reduce drag and save it from growth until we can start proper long distance sailing again.

Hi in 1974 i was in Sumatra staying at lake Toba having landed at Padang on a freight ship from Jakarta. I some how managed to over stay my visa. Catching the bus to Madan i was thinking i would have to grease some palms to fix my problem. When the immigrassi guy looked at my passport and saw i was born in Dunedin NZ he smiled and said my son studying there at university. How long an extension did i need? One month OK stamp off you go, big smile. My memories of a very friendly govt official in Indo. Fair Winds

In Guaymas, Mexico.... The cruisers chased off thieves and they came back 4 hours later. And stole 10 outboards. They had hydraulic cutters for locks and were not scared of anyone. A cruisers rule... Leave nothing on deck.

YOU NEED A electric WATER CANON!! 2" hose, basically a fire hose. That can swamp little crafts in seconds! Blow items off the deck into the water. AND of course a defense plan. These problems are simple to solve.

Wow so sorry. We never had problems that bad. We overstayed in Panama once for several months, not realizing it. We found out when we tried to fly back to the US. I Had to spend pretty much a full day to streighten it out. And pay an extra hundred dollars. I left on my flight 2 days before my wife. When I asked her how she handled it, I was going to give her my info of a full day in a taxi going from office to office. She said she didn’t have to do any of that. They just let her on the plane! I asked her how she managed that and she said oh, I just cried! And an official came by and let me though. So there’s one for you to put in your kit!!

Sliding and confusing doors everywhere in Indonesia dealing with bureaucracy at any level. Rules, regulations and changes follow no logical process. I am lucky being married to an Indonesian. You have been very patient and tried to do everything properly. Endemic corruption is rife everywhere which is sad. They have such a nice endearing manner but there is an element that will try to rip off the bule (foreigner)

Re your visa problem. Did you meet Raymond on the rally you did from Australia? Do you have his number? We ran into problems with officals checking out of Sabang years ago, a quick call to Raymond and everything was sorted. You can find him on Facebook Raymond Lesmana. Good luck with the visa and yes the west side of Sumatra is a reasonable place to sit out a year.

We had a similar incident happen to me and my husband in the Solomon Islands about 29 years ago. We were anchored n a bay when a canoe came alongside at sunset. They wanted money to pay for anchoring in that spot. We told them we already paid for the right to anchor when we checked into Honiara. And we said we will get on the radio right now to report to Honiara what they Are saying. Of course there is no calling anyone, but it was an excuse to make them feel we were in contact with authorities as we speak. We were polite but firm. We could not leave as the area is littered with reefs, so it was a sleepless night. They left,But all was well, and we never encountered any further trouble. It was a lesson to be on the alert.

There are many people in rough situations during this epidemic leading them to bad decisions. I hope this is educational that they need to have a plan to defend themselves if the next men are tougher to handle.

I really enjoy your channel, this comment is a question and in no way a criticism (more than likely only highlights my ignorance of your situation) but, could the local British Consulate in Penang not be of any help with this e-visa, even if only via the phone - at least they would then log the fact that contact was made if you were to call for help with a visa/expulsion problem later? Regardless, perhaps they have encountered the issue first hand already. These are extraordinary times and it is truly marvelous that you are battling on despite it all.

Don’t get me wrong but Penang is in Malaysia; the general problem is that Indonesia is a poor country and a lot of people are affected by the crisis. History shows that a few people turn to crime in economically challenging times- it is like it is - unfortunately

Gotta love how people think the foreign office is there for them. Its there as a liaison point for the Indonesian govt. Embassies are there to provide consular support in time of crises and distribute British passports. They wont get involved in providing consultancy services helping people pay for their visa extensions in someone else's country.
