its ok to be wrong and have a evolving opinion. also hes heavily invested in battery technology so growth in electric cars means growth in his pocket , so i believe that hes speaking honestly even if it turn out hes wrong. and if hes wrong than he still makes money lol.

@@TheDaltonmichaels "highly invested"? He kept on spitting on Tesla, GM and other companies in the US including dealers associations have been planning how to destroy Tesla. GM assembles the Bolt out of LG parts, so much so that you could call the car the LG Bolt...and you can basically thank Bob Lutz for that! As of 2019 Tesla still isn't even ALLOWED to sell car directly in several states of the Union. Just tell me if that's fair, in comparison. GM can sell a car made out of LG parts and Tesla can't sell their own cars in many states. Bob Lutz is a symbol of the failure that brought GM to chapter 11 back then.

Edit: Anyone who thinks that lithium ion batteries are all the same technology is either a fool or a liar. Since he frequently claims that Tesla's batteries are no different from everyone else's, I'll assume that he's been corrected by chemists and people in the battery industry before. *Mr. Bob Lutz:* Dude. Really? Tesla has outsold Cadillac, Chrysler, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Porsche each one brand-for-brand in their entirety for 21 months straight in the U.S. This isn't _'hype'._ This is fact. This is the new reality. Accept it. The #9 Tesla Model 3 currently outsells GM's best selling passenger car, the #10 Chevrolet MALIBU. No advertising. No _'independent franchised dealerships'._ No unionized labor. Gaining market share. Not one Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, or Lincoln passenger car beats Tesla Model 3 in sales. If Tesla ever crosses 12% U.S. market share, GM will go out of business. AGAIN.

no union. well, not surprising seeing how tesla commies wanted to build cars employing no one that could throw every taxi rideshare and truck driver on the street. screw elon. gm can rebuild a volt in 1 week. tesla can’t deliver good paint on a new car or fix a fender in under 6 months.

@@Frost517 -- Unions suck. 100% of every American automotive manufacturer that has gone out of business in the past 70 years used a unionized workforce, paid for advertising, and had _'independent franchised dealerships'._ I have never seen an operational Hudson, Studebaker, or Kaiser. My Nephews will never be able to identify a Mercury, Pontiac, Plymouth, or Oldsmobile on sight. I didn't know AMC existed as an option for purchase until they went out of business and were bought by Chrysler, who turned them into Eagle, which is now also out of business. · California, where Tesla is based, is a VERY union friendly State. Unions dominate almost every industry there. Education, logistics, railyards, airports, shipyards, construction, security, entertainment, automotive, aerospace, agriculture, government, and more... Typically, you can't swing a cat by the tail without striking a union member most anywhere in California. Organized Labor is historically aligned with the interests of Marxism. Do you actually know what a _'Commie'_ is...? However, there is one aspect of labor in one particular industry that in the past 45 years no labor union has ever been able to cajole, convince, demand, engage, infiltrate, or persuade to join. Silicon Valley tech companies. None of them have unions. Why? Because the Entrepreneurial Spirit of their operation is purely focused upon Capitalism, not Marxism, those people are anything but _'Commies'._ Because they figured out a LONG time ago that treating people fairly, giving them ample benefits, and paying them well resulted in happy, dedicated employees that worked their asses off to reach a goal. Result? No unions required. · Safety. That is the number one reason for autonomous driving technology. You don't have to believe me. Stop by the website for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration _(NHTSA)_ and it will tell you as much. No, it isn't about _'taking away jobs'_ from drivers. It does have the added benefit of making logistics less expensive by having transport take place continuously around the clock without fatigue, emotions, and poor decision making causing accidents. Killing people. On the order of 40,000 people die in car accidents each year. Reducing that to 4,000 or less, and hopefully to zero, is a good thing. · GM cancelled the VOLT. Because in a decade, they never sold over thirty thousand of them in any given year. Of course, for a decade, they never BUILT over thirty thousand of them in any given year. GM sells on the order of 3,000,000 vehicles in the U.S. every year. But for some reason they were unable to build/sell over 1% of their annual U.S. output of cars as plugins. Oh, and until the BOLT arrived, the VOLT was their single highest rated car in customer satisfaction. But GM still refused to build more of them. Owners LOVE that car. Instead, GM sold hundreds of thousands of the CRUZE and MALIBU each year. Cars that are both currently outsold by the Tesla Model 3. In fact, the Model 3 outsells EVERY passenger car offered by GM in the U.S. And that is why, as a much smaller operation than GM, Tesla uses their parts to build NEW cars and has a much lower priority on supplying spare parts to repair fender benders. Meanwhile, GM has been in the spare parts business for 111 years. Moral of the story? If you crash often, get a Chevy. Tell me, why do you believe it is necessary for rideshare operators, taxi drivers, and truck drivers to be unionized? On a factory tour years ago, *Elon Musk* was told that unions were very important. He asked why, and was told in no uncertain terms, _"We need unions to protect employees from the ASSHOLES in management."_ He responded, _"Oh, that's simple. Don't hire assholes, and you don't have that problem."_ At that moment he instituted a strict *_'NO ASSHOLES'_* hiring policy across all his businesses. It seems to have worked. Do you work for an asshole? If so, I'd suggest you quit. Because assholes have a problem. They think that if they are running a business and it does well, it is _BECAUSE_ they are being an asshole, that the company is doing well. No. It never occurs to them the opposite is true. If you are running a good business it does well IN SPITE OF your being an asshole, not BECAUSE OF IT. FYI...? 1) Tesla is the single largest employer outside the Government in the Great State of California. 2) EVERY mass market automobile manufacturer is working on full autonomy, everywhere in the world.

@@aliendroneservices6621 -- *[WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT]...?* _'FIT Credit'...?_ Tesla has EARNED *ZEV Credits* with every car they built, through a program developed, devised, and implemented at the request of traditional automobile manufacturers in 1990, thirteen years before Tesla was founded, eighteen years before their first car was Delivered. Those don't _'run out'_ at all, for anyone, ever. So long as they keep building compliant cars. There is a Federal Plugin Tax Credit available to Consumers who purchase plugin hybrid or fully electric cars for use in the U.S. That allows people to KEEP more of the money they earn. It isn't some type of monetary reward directly to Tesla at all. It isn't a _'subsidy'._ If you insist that it _IS 'a subsidy',_ then the same must be true of the *Section 179 Bisiness Tax Credit* that is awarded to companies that buy overweight gas guzzling Pickup Trucks and SUVs and provides a much larger monetary benefit that is actually eternal, everlasting, continual, forever. It has no phase out at all. Though those vehicles sell in the hundreds of thousands of units each year. All it requires is that the vehicle is operated at least 50% of the time for business applications during the calendar year it is acquired, and that it has a GVWR over 6,000 pounds.

Most every EV manufacturer admits that Tesla is far ahead in batteries, motors and software. None of the new EV's are competitive with Tesla in these areas. The TayCan is so inefficient that even with it's 800 volt system and 270 kw charging it doesn't recharge in miles per minute as fast as a Model 3. People seldom admit they're wrong. well yes and no. in the actual cars we see densities of 210-250wh/kg. that is a difference but not huge. the other thing is that for example VW chose 210wh/kg even if they had the possibility to buy 250wh/kg like every car company can do. the reason is very simple: the kwh is cheaper with the 210wh/kg density. latest tech is sometimes too expensive. tesla does not have an advantage over the other companies regarding battery tech.

Lutz was incredibly rude to be eating all during the show and crunching into the mic. Very unprofessional. His analysis of Tesla is still quite hopeless and the market is proving him wrong. Porsche just priced itself out of the Model S market with its Taycan. If Cadillac takes Lutz's advice, they will too. And both will underwhelm on key specs like range and acceleration because Tesla Model S is just plain better. Audi e-Tron and Jaguar I-Pace also underwhelm on specs and are destined for dismal sales as a result, at least in the USA. In Britain the Jag may have a "home" market advantage, and in Germany the Audi may as well, but in both cases it won't be because the cars are better than the Tesla, it will be because of customer brand loyalty. Likewise, the target audience for the Taycan appears to be other Porsche owners. In other words, the best the Tesla competition can hope for is to slow the flow of defections from their customer base that are currently going to Tesla. Tesla will still gain among customers that don't have a strong brand preference (and customers rich enough to afford several cars). Many Tesla owners trade up from a less expensive car when buying a Tesla. Tesla sales are growing by leaps and bounds, and the vast majority of the sales are coming out of the hide of legacy auto makers, mostly other ICE makers, but also PHEVs. Lutz is wrong when he says that Tesla only has more range because it has a bigger battery. It's also more efficient, especially the Model 3. Tesla isn't just buying EV powertrain components out of a catalog and creating a Frankenstein's monster of a vehicle. They're developing all critical components in-house and vertically integrating on a scale not seen since Henry Ford built the River Rouge plant. They may have manufacturing partners for some components, like Panasonic for batteries, but they're still built to Tesla specs. GM, on the other hand, outsourced the entire EV powertrain for the Bolt EV to L G Chem and utilized no in-house expertise or investment whatsoever. Tesla and L G Chem have made the necessary EV investments, and they will reap the rewards. GM hasn't, and they will lose money on every EV sale, like they do with the Bolt EV, until they bring their EV program in-house and start building their own batteries, motors and controllers. Concerning autonomy, GM/Cruise is an also-ran. Waymo had the head start, but Tesla has the winning strategy and will therefore be the ultimate winner. GM/Cruise just doesn't have the data gathering capability to compete with Tesla in developing the necessary AI technology for autonomy. Neither does anybody else. It's a bit mystifying to me why everybody in Detroit thinks GM is so far ahead. It's not. It can't be. It's strategy involves exploiting geo-fencing, HD mapping and LIDAR. They will hit a brick wall with those technologies, if they haven't already. It makes for convincing demonstrations to those who know nothing about the underlying technology, but it's not a general, scalable solution. And it's expensive, especially the LIDAR. Tesla is also the only autonomy company that has solved the packaging issues and the cost issues. Every other company, including Cruise and Waymo, add ugly sensors to the vehicle, and range-sapping computers inside, many even taking up the trunk space with all the electronics. Only Tesla has developed its own AI chip that has adequate performance *and* low power consumption, and only Tesla has all the electronics (except the sensors) on a single board. Only Tesla has figured out how to eliminate the expensive and ugly LIDAR sensors. And last but by no means least, only Tesla has implemented the robust over-the-air software updating infrastructure necessary to support an AI project of this magnitude. The traditional auto industry approach of burning all the software into ROM for the life of the vehicle (or until the dealer replaces the ROM, for a fee) just isn't a responsive enough solution for AI, which *must* be updated regularly to incorporate new machine learning.

Tesla's range is just due to battery size? C'mon, it's the opposite: Audi and Jag have already shown they need bigger batteries to approach the range of a more efficient Tesla with a smaller battery. And Tesla's advantage is marketing and smoke and mirrors? Tesla = anti-marketing. They just pump out cool products and let them speak. And Cadillac should NEVER be the brand for EVs, it's the segment of older, conservative buyers. EV = tech. Gosh, listening to Bob will help manufacturers fall even further behind. Good grief.

Hell, he re-invented most of them.... Their hardware electronics such as their new AI image processor is the most advanced in the world that changes everything in machine learning, AI, real time machine vision. There are so many inventions that have gone into the cars, the SpaceX, the stationary power systems, the Boring etc...and now urban transportation will transform cities, making them vastly more livable and desirable. These traditional midwestern auto industry people have no clue what customer really want or else GM and Ford would have responded 50 years ago to both coasts who were screaming exactly why neither bought their cars. I grew up in the 50s and every kid could id a car model in the dark just by its headlights. But by the late 70s no knew what a Ford or GM sedan even looked like since they disappeared from the streets. I remember in the 90s seeing a big unfamilar car, never saw one before and walked over to the rear and it was an Impala Chevy. Being a car nut, it surprised me i had thought they had dropped that line decades before. On the west coast, there were no US sedans. The public and motor press had been screaming at the majors they were screwing up and building cars that no one wanted, except in the midwest. No auto company exec ever stood outside a deal showroom and asked people why they did not buy their cars. They had no clue but every potential buyer and motor press writer could have told them, but with great arrogance, they were confident they knew it all because they working in the same industry, town and building 50 years. The same sort of provincial arrogance and disdain for customers is shown by Lutz and the AutoLine staff. Well, it is too late for US industries, and European and Japanese. They had dominance but grew tired and set in their ways. China, Korea, Silicon Valley and maybe India will be the transportation centers going forward. China will determine the winners and losers since they have the biggest market, most manufacturers, and the largest middle class with savings to buy cars. Why do none of he weak attempts at BEV by ICE companies have no over the air updates? Simple, it is opposed to by their only customer, the dealers who buy they cars which they sell to their own customers. Dealers want the very profitable service income from NOT doing updates between model changes. That is going to kill any attempt to compete with tech-oriented companies. Tesla does not depend on initial sales for revenue, they have ongoing income from every sale...charging, feature activation sales, power walls, solar panels, insurance etc. Due to the rapid updates of the existing fleet, the long term value retention of used Tesla is tops in the industry which translates to lower cost of leases and ownership. A 4-year old S retains 80-87% of its sale price while 4-year-old Porsche Panamerica(the closest to Taycan) is 45-49% so which one is lost cost to drive per mile? Which one has lower lease payments? And despite the lower owner cost, which manufacturer had the largest total income flow over that 4 years? Porsche made $10k on building that car and selling it, one time. Tesla makes $6000 for simply turning on a feature that was already built into the car, FSD! plus insurance monthly payments, charger income every 2-3 days and running a gross margin of 31% on making the car in the first place. IF it was leased, at the end of the lease, Tesla takes title back and has a free car, paid for by the lease payments, that enters taxi service and generates $30-50,000 a year in only the cost of charging, and registration. At 200,000 gets new brake pads. Who is smarter, a Porsche or GM, or Tesla who stands to make $300-500k on each car in the first 10 years after building it? I might be that bright buy I think $10k profit from building a car is a bit less than $300,000 each on a wholely owned fleet of 1,000,000 cars is the better deal. Tesla is in a different business. GM and others make and sell cars. Tesla provides a unique Transportation ecosystem with all parts integrated and generating income, all at a lower cost of use to the customer. They are fully different animals.

The more and more I hear from Ol' Bob, the more I realize he sees Tesla through the lens of his limited scope. He says once a company like Porsche puts out a car like the Model S, "it becomes a different story". Well, Bob, the Taycan has a 93kwh battery to the top 100kwh of the model S. Top range on those two cars is 288 for the Porsche and 365 for the model S. Fastest 0-60 is 2.6sec for the Porsche vs 2.4sec for the Tesla. AND Tesla gets that superior performance and range to you for about HALF the cost of the Porsche. So tell me again how "over-hyped" Tesla is again Bob. PLEASE

Quote "Lutz’s comments fail to account for the specific chemistries and energy density in Tesla’s battery cells, which continues to be improved by the electric car maker. This is one of the reasons why cars like the Model X Long Range can hit 328 miles of range per charge with a 100 kWh battery pack, while the Audi e-tron 55, a vehicle with a 95 kWh battery pack, can only go 204 miles. That’s a 124-mile difference in range from a 5 kWh difference in battery pack size."

They think what I’ve been thinking up until the past few years, that they can snap there fingers and make 10 new electric vehicles in a few years, but now they and I know better. They’ve had the chance to do what Tesla has done for years and spent billions on “ research and development “ but dont realize how to sell electric vehicles along side fossils (and the dealerships don’t want to) . Old Bob Lutz always said that Elon and Tesla didn’t know what they were up against and “it’s not easy being in the car business “, well now the legacy brands are finding out that it’s not easy being in the electric car business ...
