Bob Mortimer & Paul Whitehouse

Bob Mortimer & Paul Whitehouse

2 жыл бұрын

The first day of fishing was unsuccessful, but, on the second, they both catch themselves a beautiful The Barbel fish. Bob later admits that he’d asked the Vicar to pray for him to catch a good fish. Could this be the sign they’ve been looking for? Paul’s not convinced.
Fish of the day: The Barbel
Location: Middle Wye, Herefordshire
Taken from Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing Season 1 Episode 2 - Paul and Bob fish for The Barbel in Hay-on-Wye, visit a local Vicar, and sample the great outdoors.

Bril!. Used to love the chats I'd have with my dear old Dad when fishing...Even after his passing I still take his old rods with me when I go fishing now and put one out. Still 'talk' to him, though it's only a one way conversation now. Daft I know, but!. Nuff said.

You`re right there mucker. I remember my first Barbel, on the river Severn a few hundred yards up river from Bewdley, absolutely lost my mind when I first saw that gold shimmer in the ripples, seemed like it took an absolute age to get the bugger in as a giddy teenager.

Still on my wanted list and sadly sparse around my area, especially free stretches, I have however caught some nice tench lately (not rivers) which is an equal joy due to the power and their shyness, always a challenge. I find catching anything on the river gives more fight than a lake and with it a better sense of achievement. Recently Taken it up again after 20 years, thanks to watching these two, and although it’s prob not quite as much fun on your own as they have together. There are some beautiful little spots if you can actually find them. It’s a shame there isn’t a national database of all the day ticket or free swims in the Uk the vast majority being owned by clubs. Google searches are often very outdated and conflicting regarding whether you can or can’t fish and the searching can be a bit of a drag at times

I love these guys and Bob is one of the funniest guys ever. Where I live (in Minnesota), we call these fish carp and it used to be against the law to release a carp as they’re considered trash or rough fish. I think it’s still illegal but haven’t gone fishing in ages. If no one was about ..back they’d go. I couldn’t stand the idea of throwing them up on the bank to suffer until death. But my God, are they ever fun to catch on light tackle! We usually use whole kernel sweet corn straight out of the can.

They don't have Barbel in the states. You have common carp, they are kinda similar to Barbel though. A lot of places in the US now protect these fish as they are not the invasive species they first thought. Carp are great fish to catch:)

Ah I could watch them hang out and talk for hours! Also, can anyone tell me how they catch and release the fish without hurting them? Surely the hook might do some damage or am I just super behind on the latest fishing advancements?
@turdferguson7264
@turdferguson7264 2 жыл бұрын
Most of a fish's mouth is cartilage, so there's no nerve endings. The actual catching of a fish can tire and distress the fish, but a good angler will keep that minimal, and a fish recovers quickly.
@WolfmanWoody
@WolfmanWoody 2 жыл бұрын
Also, they don't have that sentient part of the brain that enables them to feel pain in the way that humans do. They are aware of the hook and the fact that they are tethered to a line by it, the hook hole itself is no more than we have an injection in the arm. Provided we keep the 'fight' to a minimum and ensure they are fully recovered before release then there's no harm done.

Barbless hooks and padded unhooking mats also help to minimise damage to the fish, along with minimal handling with wet hands.

Lovely video but their Barbel handling code is non existent. First, always rest the fish in the landing net for a couple of minutes. Second, always use an unhooking mat, third, reintroduce the fish back into the water ( as soon as poss) and where possible, hold the fish facing up stream before letting go once it kicks strongly. Barbel are wonderful fish and give everything in the fight, so please treat them accordingly, the last thing we want is a damaged fish.
