That's why artists practice drawing things from reference by simplifying and breaking the reference into shapes of color and value. You have to build up a visual library in your head before you can draw from imagination, and the only way of doing that is observing things over and over again.

If you really want to learn how to paint just take photos or use real life reference and paint the shadows before you paint the mid tone and light on top, like Bob does. Learn about hue shifting, colors inherently having different values, and learn about how light and bounces and interacts with different materials. Check out Proko's video for light and shadow and how to draw basic forms and check out this guy called Kienan Lafferty, he has some videos about color that are top notch. Try looking up "color boomerang kienan lafferty" on KZbin as well as Proko

I used to watch Bob Ross back in 1988 on cable TV, in UK. It was so hypnotic. I am so glad to have rediscovered his painting. It is just amazing what he can do with big paint brushes and a pallet knife, and his commentary is brilliant.
