WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I will argue that there is supposed to be no such thing as atheism. Hear me out. As far as i know, most people live their lives without knowing the god of other religions. Many of them are just brainwashed to be biased towards their own belief system. So a person who grow up without ever being indoctrinated... Just grew up... a normal person. A person who will not believe in incredulous tales of magic and myth. But looking closely, isnt... what normal people do to other religions, are also the same thing they do to other religions? When a christian is askes to believe in thor, he'd ask for proof. But not when its his own fairy tale. Basically, what i observe is; A person who believes in bronze age fairy tales. And a normal person. Calling us atheists is just projection. A christian is atheistic towards hinduism. And a hindu is atheistic towards christians. So to me the term atheist is just to shallow of a word to describe us. I prefer to call a person who doesnt believe in any gods, a normal person. That's it...
@WhoThisMonkey
@WhoThisMonkey 2 жыл бұрын
@@hakureikura9052 Is it abnormal to believe in a god? Humans are prone to flights of fancy, we aren't all born with an inherent sense of rationality. Yes, we are born without a belief and it gets introduced to us later, but there is also the possibility of a person creating their own god or godlike concept. Having an imaginary friend as a child is pretty common for one example.

Bob's reply at 6:03 tells everyone listening that he doesn't know what the word incredulity means, or at the very least doesn't understand what an argument from incredulity is. SR gave a perfectly straightforward counter about which it shouldn't have been possible to be confused - namely, my not having an answer doesn't mean your answer is correct - and Bob inexplicably brings up his new favourite phrase. I would have been interested to hear his reasoning for that.
@logan666
@logan666 2 жыл бұрын
I had a tough time with this one at first because my initial thought was, “yeah I guess I would have to say I’m incredulous to your God claims”. The difference is in SRs and SQs responses where the incredulity in the theists frame of reference is an answer to a question, rather than as a starting place to knowledge for an atheist. Sure we’re all incredulous, the question is are you ok with that being the end of the discussion?
@oldmanaz.6811

Incredulous is 'not willing or not able to believe something', but I've never heard anyone on the AE say they are 'not willing' or 'not able' to believe in a god. In fact as many hosts _DID_ at one point believe in a god, so clearly they are willing and able to believe in one, even though they are now atheists. I wonder how Bob would explain that? 🤔
@splatted6201
@splatted6201 2 жыл бұрын
*Sure we’re all incredulous, the question is are you ok with that being the end of the discussion?* Right. The mistake about what argument from personal incredulity _is_ comes from loose thinking. But when we analyze, it's obvious that we are going to find people to be personally incredulous of a claim whenever they honestly take a position _against_ it. Argument from personal incredulity is the rather gross problem of trying to use a property of all honest disbelief as _proof_ of the contrary claim. One might switch perspectives and say that argument from personal incredulity is like argument from personal authority. After all, both are personal. Just as with personal incredulity being a property of disbelief, personal authority is a property of one who claims to have any degree of knowledge. The fallacy is in taking this generic property of believing oneself to be justified, and using that as the _only_ justification. It is obvious that, excepting possibly some abstract trivial claims, having personal authority to be justified on a claim means that you have _done some of the work of investigating the claim,_ and can retrace some of your steps by _providing other reasons_ for your belief.

From Wikipedia: "The Azusa Street Revival was a historic series of revival meetings that took place in Los Angeles, California.[1] It was led by William J. Seymour, an African-American preacher. The revival began on April 9, 1906, and continued until roughly 1915. On the night of April 9, 1906, Seymour and seven men were waiting on God on Bonnie Brae Street, "when suddenly, as though hit by a bolt of lightning, they were knocked from their chairs to the floor," and the other seven men began to speak in tongues and shout out loud praising God. The news quickly spread; the city was stirred; crowds gathered; services were moved outside to accommodate the crowds who came from all around; people fell down as they approached, and attributed it to God; people were baptized in the Holy Spirit and the sick were said to be healed.[2] The testimony of those who attended the Azusa Street Revival was "I am saved, sanctified, and filled with the Holy Ghost" in reference to the three works of grace of Holiness Pentecostals, the original branch of Pentecostalism.[3] To further accommodate the crowds, an old dilapidated, two-story frame building at 312 Azusa Street in the industrial section of the city was secured. This building, originally built for an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, had more recently been used as a livery stable, storage building and tenement house. In this humble Azusa Street mission, a continuous three-year revival occurred and became known around the world. Stanley H. Frodsham, in his book, With Signs Following, quotes an eye-witness description of the scene: The revival was characterized by spiritual experiences accompanied with testimonies of physical healing miracles,[4] worship services, and speaking in tongues. The participants were criticized by some secular media and Christian theologians for behaviors considered to be outrageous and unorthodox, especially at the time. Today, the revival is considered by historians to be the primary catalyst for the spread of Pentecostalism in the 20th century." If your "evicence for god" is a stopry about 7 men behaving crazy over 100 years ago, then you really are confused...
