I was at the veterinarian and noticed that they sell a rattlesnake vaccine for dogs. I asked why they don't have one for cats, and the vet said "Because cats aren't stupid enough to get bit by rattlesnakes."
@technocatdance3 жыл бұрын
Rattlesnake bites to cats are a fair amount less common because of the agility cats have. ... But, if the cat is inexperienced when it comes to hunting or is just overall less agile, bites can and certainly do happen
@wasidanatsali63742 жыл бұрын
I asked my vet about the rattlesnake vax for dogs because there are a lot of rattlers in my area. He said they weren’t worth the risk to reward. They’re only good for about 30 days and dogs can have allergic reactions to them. They’re mostly used on SAR dogs going into disaster areas where a lot of rattlers have been displaced. Then he told me he’d treated a lot rattler bit dogs and only seen two that died. Both were Jack Russels that got bit multiple times. My vet is a straight shooter. He doesn’t BS people in order to milk money out of them.

Cats are pretty much the natural predator of snakes along with raptors. Their fur protects them from most bites and most likely a paw bite won't inject poison into the blood. (overpen) Once the fight started if the Snake didn't retreat the ending was a foregone conclusion.
@redwolfexr3 жыл бұрын
@urapp over penetration. If the fang goes all the way through the poison won't inject. If you have a cat look at how their legs are built. Not much meat and if the snake DOES get a good grip they are going to bite all the way through.

@@foreverseethe Not that one-sided and it depends partly on whether the snake is a constrictor. You can find many videos of various species of cats taking out various species of snakes and they make it look easy with their incredible reaction time. Cats are just the perfect hunting machines. The way it kept hooking the snakes head with its claws, finally getting a firm grip and then crushing its skull with his jaws for immediate death, it was the perfect strategy.
@jlg4ever3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, furry quick four-legged mammals like cats and mongeese have a big advantage over cold-blooded snakes. Snakes just don't have the endurance for a long fight. They win by striking quick and either disabling or frightening off their foe. Cats just patiently wait them out, slapping their heads from a relatively safe distance until the snake tires out, then crunch on the neck and skull, and then dinner is served.

That Southern pacific rattler (Crotalus oreganus helleri) is native to my area. They are amazing animals and, judging from its size, it was somewhat aged. The bobcat seemed quite experienced at securing itself that meal. Thank you for posting this wonderful natural video.

Bobcats eat rattlesnakes, yet they aren’t immune to rattlesnake venom. So how does it work? Apparently, the wild felines have perfected a technique of slapping the snakes silly, judging from a trail camera video recorded Oct. 6 in Angeles National Forest near San Fernando, California. It starts with a bobcat veering off a hiking trail in search of something just out of view. An explosion of rattles can be heard as the cat hops backwards back into view. In the minutes that follow, a rattlesnake (about 4 feet in length) is seen lunging repeatedly at the bobcat, which steps forward each time to slap the reptile’s open mouth to the ground. The turning point comes when the bobcat manages to sink claws into the snake’s head, pulling it close enough to bite just behind the eyes. Within seconds, the rattling stops and the snake falls limp. The bobcat is seen dragging the snake off into the bushes. However, the cat then returns to the spot to roll victoriously in the dirt - twice. It’s not clear if the bobcat was bitten at any point. Martinez’s video has been shared more than 43,000 times and prompted more than 3,000 comments, including some who argued it might be a lynx, rather than a bobcat.

@hankakah I pretty sure it didn't get bit or atleast wasn't able to inject venom. When Rattlesnakes bite and inject they hold the bite for a few seconds, and also potent venom bites are very painful and felines have no resistance to Rattlesnake venom.

@hankakah I'm sure that is possible that snake only injected a small amount, The first symptom from the venom would be lots of pain in the bite area from the venom destroying the tissue and local circulation. The Bobcat would certainly be licking the painful bite area. But perhaps it wasn't enough to do much damage.
