Akira is probably the most technically ambitious animated film ever done. I've watched a frame by frame analysis done by an expert in producing hand drawn cell animation and he was shocked by all the little details that would have been overlooked or intentionally left out of any other high budget feature film. He was in awe of how the film refused to compromise production value or take shortcuts at any point, even when certain scenes received no benefit by not cutting some corners, or where the scene was drawn from the worst possible camera perspective for animators to work from when depicting what the scene calls for because it might be easy to pose a character in the scene from that perspective, but animating the character from that perspective just wasn't done because it's impossible to get body limbs to be foreshortened correctly across the entire range of motion. Like, animators learned long ago to not attempt to frame a scene from certain angles because the subjects might look correctly proportioned and foreshortened in each cell as the subjects are moved through the scene and the inbetweening process happens, but once the scene is filmed and viewed at full speed it doesn't look right. So rather than draw, film, check, redraw, film, check, redraw, film, check, etc to make it look right, it just became a rule of thumb to not draw scenes from these difficult angles. Akira took on the most technically challenging and work intensive techniques head on, so if you haven't seen it you really should, at least to say you've seen the film that set the record for 'maximum effort' .

I am Japanese. I don't understand why Westerners rate Akira so highly. Perhaps it's because they simply don't know many other anime works, I guess. Maybe Western media and authorities have evaluated that garbage in the past, and that's why ordinary Westerners are bound by it. There are other such examples. Garbage like Haruki Murakami novels is also overrated in the West. In Japan, the anime version of Akira is seen as a ``silly work'' and a ``uninteresting work''. From my personal point of view, the anime version of Akira is mostly garbage. Akira will never be included in the "Best 100 Anime" in Japan. Even in the "Best 1000", I doubt if Akira is qualified to enter. In Japan, only "manga version Akira" is appreciated by people. Because the art style of the manga has originality. However, Western critics overestimate the anime version of Akira. This is utterly puzzling.
@THERoflberryPwncakes Жыл бұрын
@@takaakiyamada5451 you're right... from a perspective only concerned with story, character design, casting, style, etc. It's not at all a great film. But in 1992 when it finally turned up in our town's VHS rental shop (we were the last place to get anything new) it was incredible... there was only one copy so it was always checked out, even on weekdays. So I always looked for it and if I found it in stock I'd rent it and call friends over to watch because it was the coolest thing we'd ever seen animated. At the time it was released, it was a big deal in the same way Star Wars was a big deal. It was the most expensive anime made at the time with a budget of ¥10 billion in todays yen. Akira doesn't have my respect for it's story writing or script or any of the non-visual artforms that go into films, it's got my respect for the technical quality of the visual production. I grew up wanting to be an animator and I had the light box with the ACME animation paper pegs (if you know you know) reams of paper, a discount rate at print shop that would print my pencils onto cells that I would paint. So I know the real grind that animating is... it's repetitive, tedious, and mostly boring and mind numbing. It's WORK. So when Akira comes along and does the animation the hard way whenever possible, it earns my respect, because why would you do that to yourself... just choosing to animate at the full 24 fps instead of doing the industry standard of shooting every cell twice for an effective 12 fps is like doing a full 100% complete on Elden Ring with maxed difficulty because why not? But please... Japsplain to me again about how it's got a garbage story that I wasn't talking about in the first place.

@@kinghijinx5892 I actually dropped it in the Middle XD I guess its worth to finish it?
@kinghijinx58923 жыл бұрын
@@lowserver2 I would finish it, if only because it's not really that long. I still think the middle is by far the worst part, but it does get a a bit better and a little more interesting by the end. I'll be honest, one of the things that disappointed me the most about Ergo Proxy was the fact that Vincent ended up being so important. I though Re-l was pretty cool and going in I thought she was going to be the main character, and although she is one of them, they also felt like focusing on Vincent as well, and I just couldn't stand him. He's just such an obnoxiously annoying character all the way through. The middle of the series is also pretty boring, and not a lot really happens. Sometimes it tries a bit too hard to be trippy and weird and pretentious. But as I said, things get a little better by the ending and some interesting stuff starts to happen. Although for me it never really gets better than the first few episodes. It seemed really good to me until all the main characters suddenly just decide to travel across a desert, that was where it started to get bad.

In our real world lives, in effect, Nation States have been making their Nations into Panopticons since 9/11 so understanding the concept is pretty important. It, like "Minorty Report", is a cautionary tale on what can happen when we try to prevent crimes before they happen.

Personal warning on Astra, the plot may seem straightforward but stick with it for hidden depths 😜.

Leaving out the only strong competitor in classic space opera genre presented on anime - Seikai no Monshou/Seikai no Senki is odd. Also significant works forgotten here are (in random order) Dominion Tank Police, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds (this one is a sci-fi marvel), Starship Operators (not my piece of cake, but has some hard sci-fi inside), Armitage III, and, while arguably containing mecha, Heroic Age.

Was glad to see Planetes get some attention, it really is underrated, along with Time of Eve. Ergo Proxy is another I was glad to see, it's good, but you have to be in the mood to watch or it will get really slow in some parts. Parasyte, Psycho Pass, and Redline are a given for me, along with all GitS stuff (except two things). Same for Cowboy Bebop. Akira for me can only be viewed through nostalgia glasses as well. Glad to see Space Battleship Yamato on here as well, I remember running home from school in the early 80's to watch Star Blazers, but haven't watched the new stuff, except the live action movie which I think I only bought when it released because of nostalgia (same with the Harlock cgi movie). Some that I think should've shown up or gotten an honorable mention: Mardock Scrambled, Paprika, Railgun/Index/Accelerator (particularly the first), Chrome Shelled Regios (but it suffers from the creator dying before he finished it so doesn't get to explain/wrap everything up), The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Harlock (although I will FULLY admit I am looking through this with nostalgia glasses), Stein's;Gate, Vivy, Trinity Blood (which is another that suffered from creator dying except the studio played with the end to try and wrap it up). There are others but I think they would either lean too far into supernatural or mecha and likely be out of the running. Two that would fit but some might dislike because they push the "man's inhumanity" or "man using those that are different as tools" would be Black Bullet" and "What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?" Black Bullet tries to make it less grim with comedy and Will you save us has a little comedy and has a cutesy anime style I guess, but is still pretty sad. /end wall o' text

Kado: the right answer (2017). It was a thought provoking and ambitious effort, except for the disappointing/underwhelming ending. Regardless, it will be recognized as one of the best in the genre in time. Macross? Steins gate?

Good list . Surprised you didn't have Ninja Scroll , Vampire hunter D, Lupin the 3rd , or Golgo 13 .

Thanks, I just didn’t think those were sci-fi enough but they’re good anime

Iria;Zeiram the Animation introduced me to anime (at 10/11… when other things were happening, as well). DEF the best sci fi anime I’ve ever seen, with 2(?) live action movie sequels, too…

Yall should check out Kokkoku as well. Really weird. Not time travel, but time stopping. Just imagine Dio's stand ability from JoJo S3 but in a more realistic setting?

One I really enjoyed, but a lot of people don't like the slow pace.

Great list! After watching the Saikano anime, I tracked down the manga to fill in the blanks - worth the read. I've added Kaiba and LOGH to my "need to watch" list. :-)

how was the manga in comparison?

Nice to see Speed Grapher on this list. Think you can do an review of it in the near future to see your thoughts on it?

Glad to see my Top 7 or so are on the list, though some honorable mentions. Darker Than Black held my attention way back when (haven't watched it in a looong time), and while it's not straight sci-fi, enough qualifies and has a great story arc that Gungrave gets lumped in to my list. I could go unearth my 90s box and pull some really obscure ones, which I may spend the evening doing now that the idea has gotten me interested in rewatching some classics.

darker than black looks awesome. watched a few eps years ago but got side tracked with another project. always been wanting to revisit it

I wish physical anime weren't made to be "rare collectibles" rather than a widely available viewing alternative with extra features

Good work! I’ve seen a handful of those anime you named and hadn’t heard of several of them! One thought: it is too bad Last Exile didn’t make the list.

I love last exile, even reviewed it, just consider it more fantasy. Hope you enjoy some of these you haven’t seen. Also check out Fantastic Children
@baahcusegamer45302 жыл бұрын
@@bobsamurai I can understand it being thought of more in the Fantasy category. Sci-fi/Fantasy do have an enormous amount of overlap.
