I have not seen this type of valve since the 1970s when I used to re-washer them in an old British telecom office block in Nottingham uk - we used to import the washers from the USA great times , I'm now retired and enjoy your channel it brings back some good memories of my 50 years in the plumbing trade all the best stay safe in these crazy time . I was fully confident in shutting off the water screw and opening up my flushometer to replace the valve. But after watching this video, I dunno... I'm second guessing myself... I don't want to cause a leak in my building. :D

many thanks. The other instructional video I found on this did not explain that you have to wait a few minutes while it's flushing for the pressure to stabilize and shut off. So I thought the part was not aligned or tightened correctly or something and kept trying to fix it for hours, going insane. Then I come across your video and all I had to do was wait 1 min longer.

If I may ask you Mr.Sessa,isn't it better to have an expansion tank as opposed to water hammer arrestors?When we first bought this house the plumbuing was a total nighmare to put it mildly.This house never had a water heater and the water flow was terrible and I do mean terrible.I installed eight inch copper nipples to serve as air cushions and that worked up until the eight inch copper nipples filled with water as will happen over time and I had to drain the water pipes in order to drain the water from the eight inch copper nipples that I was using to tame the water hammer effect.I installed a water pressure reducing valve but I neglected to install an expansion tank and I used to get such water hammer that it sounded like somebody was whacking the water pipes with a hammer.I replaced my water heater and installed an expansion tank and no more water hammer of any kind thank God.It is also important to note that water hammer can occur if the water pipes are not fastened in place properly,great video as always Mr.Sessa,God bless you and yours.

Is that what you do when the water in flushometer keep running! Turn that screw down clock wise?

Proceed with caution, when you attempt to shut it clockwise, it sometimes starts to leak uncontrollably!

I have a similar unit in my bathroom in Brooklyn, and when I have to shut the house water in the basement, I get the water hammer first time I flush. The shut off on the valve itself is old and not great to use for full shut off. Is there any way I can prevent the hammer for that first flush...very disturbing and I fear pipe damage which it once caused. Thanks!

When you turn the water on, have all the faucets open at the highest level as well as the room where the offender is. It should be able to escape which should help with that water hammer issue.
