I do *not* understand why people insist on drinking and driving, especially since half of them probably use Lyft or Uber very liberally. It's quite fashionable, true? So, if that's the case, how do we explain this? Is it because of the fear of leaving the car behind? Is it because once they're intoxicated they can't remember the "designated driver" thing, and so they lapse into getting in their cars, and pull away, obliterated? I don't drink, so I have trouble relating to this.

Alcohol lowers inhibitions. Before drinking it goes something like "I'll just have a little and won't get drunk", then after drinking it's something like "I probably shouldn't be doing this.. nah I'm fine, it'll be fine.."

My dad was an alcoholic and I worked downtown at bars since I was 18 and saw lots of stupidity so I was never a big drinker. I truly don't understand it now. We only had cabs available which were way too expensive. Now they've got ride sharing so there's no excuse. But I agree with the comment about alcohol lowering inhibition and people thinking they're good to go after they've had a couple or way too much. What's more frustrating than that to me is depending on the area a drink driver gets pulled over in, they may not even go to jail are are just released after paperwork is done so while it's an inconvenience for them, it's not really punishment or a deterrent which is why there are always so many repeat offenders.
