“You can’t go wrong with getting strong” I love that and I can testify that that is very accurate. In the past I’ve spent far to much time and effort focusing on flexibility and mobility when it comes to injury, but getting strong makes so much more sense and really works.

really hits close right now... i’ve been dealing with an injury for the whole of 2020, now spent already more than two months without running. but the thing is that i never got checked and hence i didn’t take it as seriously as i should have. so now after two months of ”revovery” my foot is worse than it ever was and i’m finally gonna see a doctor. can’t help but think how much easier and quicker it could’ve been. wow it’s so hard but SO important to listen to you body and take its messages seriously!

Great advice and reminders, thank you! As someone who struggled for years with a high hamstring tendinopathy (which I finally got to heal almost completely) and now something with my supraspinatus, I'm noticing some interesting parallels between the two. The rehab stuff starts to make it feel better immediately, and it's so tempting to think you're pretty much almost healed after a week or two when you're just not. Then the yo-yo of re-injury, more rehab, re-injury. That six month timeline is the real deal and may even be on the minimal side if you're talking about 40-year-old tendons (cough). I'm about a year into a near-daily workout habit with HIIT and bodyweight stuff and so pissed that a lot of the workouts I want to do now hurt my shoulder. Looking for ways to "stay strong" while I address the imbalances that led to this latest injury.

Really awesome thoughts about that theme. Im really lucky that ive never had a real big injury while doin sports because I had a dislocated shoulder from a bike accident so I had to be really carefull for about 5 months and also had physical therpy,but like i said i didnt do any sports back then,but today im spending at least 2-3 days in a bouldering gym and im really aware of my body and try to listen to it as soon as it makes unusual stuff,id say it helped me a lot of times to prevent bigger injuries. My big advice: If something feels unusual or you feel pain in anyway,take a step backwards,look closely and call it a day id youre in doubt. You can go another day as well. It‘s not about how long youve been doing sports,its about how long youre able to do sports.

This is such a good video, definitely go and talk to an in-person professional. I was an athlete as a kid and injured my knee at 12 but brushed it off and spent years just continuing, got additional minor injuries and by the time I saw a professional at 17, my knee has now progressed to the point of no return, and it’s taken two doctors, two physios and almost 4 years to get the hip and ankle implications in that leg under control with targeted stretching and strengthening. Even my knee is better than it has been in years. It will never be perfect, and I’m going to need a replacement far younger than I should, but I can get to a physical point where that can be delayed as long as possible, and I can continue without a cane for longer.

Hello Tom, I think a year ago, I commented on a video about my right hamstring hurting with a sharp pain whenever attempting middle splits. Your advice was to strengthen with abductor flies. After a year of strength training, my hamstring feels better, and I am far more close to a full split after using your PNF techniques. Thanks Tom!

I have had two injuries (torn calf and strained hamstring) and both times I took my time with it. I still went to the gym and did worked on what wasn't hurting but my primary focus was on rehabing that injury. Even when I didn't go to the gym I still worked on it at home whether it was doing some SMR (self myofascial release), active stretching or using bands. Seven months after tearing my calf I went into my first strongman competition stronger than ever.

First of all, thank you for addressing my comment... IN A FULL-LENGTH VIDEO FORMAT! This was very useful. I'm very hesitant when it comes to paying ''professionals'' to sort my shit out because I'm yet to stumble upon a knowledgeable physiotherapist in my area whose approach is not solely based on resting, foam rolling and static stretching. For example, when I had PFPS (patellofemoral pain syndrome) in my right knee, I was advised to stop running, roll out and stretch my quads two times a day. Since I'm self-taught when it comes to most things, me being me, I've started researching like crazy and discovered than knee pain is usually caused by weak hip or feet muscles (or in my case, both). I've started religiously doing glute, adductor and abductor exercises coupled with arch strengthening exercises and my knee started to feel stronger and more stable. I gotta get back to doing all those things again because I've been feeling some stinging in my knee lately... Setting realistic time frames. Yeah, I have a problem with that. I always hope I can be back to where I was in two weeks which sets me up for another injury.

The points you adressed are basically my learnings from my ongoing injury. My cause of my supraspinatus inflammation is most likely from olympic weightlifting (everything overhead e.g. snatches and jerks). It is an injury of overuse overtime. For two months i trained through the pain. Then the corona lockdown kicked in. First i just let it rest without activity, as the doctor suggested. Didn't help. I started going back to calisthenics training which is my training background prior to weightlifting. It didn't help either, probably worsened it. Don't know why exacty, maybe the one arm pushups weren't good, or it was too intense in general (it was a program with which i started calisthenics and dug that up for the lockdown training; trained on the hardest program in that book). Then when weightlifting was available again, the pain was still there. That was the time i accepted that I need to stop and start doing some rehab exercises instead. On the next lockdown in 2020, somewhat around september i think, mostly yoga, stretching for splits, and shoulder rotator cuff exercises were the main incentive in the exercise regimen. (Your videos were/are a valuable source on the stretching part, thanks very much). The injury Is still ongoing unfortunately, and most physios were massaging only. Maybe i need to ask for more strengthening exercises. I am doing some basic calisthenic exercises which are not hurting right now, and furthermore need to pick up on rotator cuff exercises again, on whose i slacked lately. This injury is still ongoing after a year. Another doc i visited said the supraspinatus is mostly inflamed with a micro tear maybe, and the supra also caused some problems to the bone from its pulling on it. It can last for a year he said. He suggested not doing anything overhead strength training wise for that time period. yeah right not gonna happen. i hope patience and listening to the body whilst training and rehabing will do the trick. Thanks againg for your videos, as i found out about them since the last year.

In training for vsit I pulled a muscle in my back that is usually active when I do basics like pullups, so if it doesn't go away when my bar arrives I'll try to treat it that way. If that fails that means something is really messed up and I'll just take a brake.

I suffered permanent injury and now I'll never be able to work out or practice a sport. I was too naive to ever consider this possibility, so when it happened it hit me hard. Tbh, I still feel angry at I don't even know what, and it is very hard to release stress and accumulated energy now that I can't work out, it's a whole lesson of patience and wisdom. A bit more then 2 years ago I teared my scapholunate ligament in my left wrist in a crash with my BMX. My mobility got a little bit better after rehab, but even until this day I only gained back 80 % of my ROM. The only good thing about it is, that it doesn't really affect my BMX riding :) As much as I would like to start working on some bodyweight skills like handstand, planche etc.. it's just painful when I try. I decided to give up on that and replace it with safer weighted options.

Thanks for talking about the pyschogocial side of injuries. I was injured for the first time since I was 9 last year at age 25. I dislocated my elbow after falling from a boulder while rock climbing. A year later I suddenly started having elbow pain, which was diagnosed as right medial epicondylitis. I am 3 months into my reinjury and it has been a difficult process mentally. First tried to self diagnose the problem and I was in major denial of the extent of the injury even after the MD made it clear that this could be a chronic issue. I did not want believe or accept the damage that had been done. Ever since I dislocated my elbow I've developed an irrational fear.of injuries. I still live in fear and denial. I am trying to work on patience and focusing on other areas of life, but I miss rock climbing and pushing myself physically very much. How do you fill the void of something you love so much?
@BodyweightWarrior
@BodyweightWarrior 5 жыл бұрын
Christine Holmberg ah man I completely get that. Injuries are the most annoying that stop you doing what you love. Main thing is to continue to work towards goals in ways that don’t affect your elbow. Hip flexibility, pushing strength, rotator cuff health, core and even some very light technical work can all still be done

You hit all the points of what an athlete must get in the must of when injured. Acceptance and optimism are what helped me tremondously through my injuries up to today. Back in November I dislocated my left shoulder at a four wall handball tournament and admitted into labral shoulder repair surgery two weeks after. It was definitely devastating because I was trainning for a national collegiate tournament this month. All the years I put into getting my form right and reaching at an exceptionally competitive level only to be pushed aside. But hey, this made me realize I was, indeed, pushing well beyond my physical limits throughout my training sessions. Also, that I really need to pay attention to these seemingly subtle and minor pains because my subjective sense of the severity of the issue will likely be wrong. Tomorrow is my first day at PT post-op. Small steps, but progress is being made!

Which coffee grinder do you use ??? Thanks I don’t understand why sometimes people think that spending money in health or a good coach it’s a bad investment 🤷🏻‍♂️ ..... do yourself a favor and get a professional advice and assist to seminars.

Gastón CG it’s the mahlkonig Vario, very good grinder for domestic use. And I know, I used to have that opinion but when I don’t know now, I value someone else’s knowledge

Injuries are ultimately a good thing.. They always come as a result of neglect. Neglecting a movement and sometimes it comes from not understanding. But then after you get injured, you understand. Don’t know of anything that teaches more than injuries. Also it helps you to find alternatives and progessions. Embrace them is all I can say. 🤙🏼
