Flight 605 touched down more than 2,100 feet (640 m) past the runway's displaced threshold, at a speed of 150 knots (278 km/h; 173 mph), following an IGS runway 13 approach. After the aircraft landed, the First Officer took control of the plane and attempted to keep the aircraft on the centerline. However, his inputs were too severe and the Captain was forced to aid him. Meanwhile, the Captain inadvertently increased engine power rather than activating the thrust reversers. The auto brakes were set at only the number two level and then were turned off seconds after touchdown due to the increase in power. The speedbrakes were extended briefly, but then retracted, also due to the power increase. This caused the plane to "float", making the brakes ineffective until the speed brakes were extended again. When the First Officer finally noticed that the auto-brakes were disarmed and the thrust reversers had not deployed, the captain immediately applied manual braking and thrust reversal.
@laurah10203 ай бұрын
Ok- so, right off the bat, they were too low to land according to the auto glide path indicator, and fairly far down the runway (narrator says 300m past touchdown threshold- you mention 640m past it), going quite fast. This screams GO AROUND, to me, but I'm no licensed pilot (just a trainee). Then, upon recognizing the auto-brakes had not engaged, the thrust reversers were not deployed, and especially given the First Officer was already increasing power, the next logical step would seem to have been to straighten it's course, then continue to increase power in an effort to get the plane airborne again, as quickly as possible. I cannot imagine they managed to slow down so much that they couldn't get the plane straightened out, back onto the runway, and up to speed enough to take off again, before the end of the runway...At the most they may have snagged the back end of the plane on something, in their attempt to gain lift, but wouldn't that have had better odds for success, compared to falling off the runway, in a chaotic confusing messy end? It's almost like Universe was setting them up for a go around- but the pilots decided, against all odds, to continue trying to land....baffling.
@wilsjane3 ай бұрын
@@laurah1020 During all landings, the pilot not flying should have sole responsibility for thrust during touchdown, checking all engines for idle, then setting and deploying the thrust reversers. Many accidents have resulted from lack of a pre agreed sharing of responsibilities. Both pilots should also clearly verbally state what they are doing the whole time. When the speed brakes retracted, the pilot monitoring should have seen what was happening from the instruments and clearly stated that he would redeploy them at the correct speed. The decision to continue landing was a difficult one. Weather conditions following a go around could have got worse rather than better. They came in low, they made it, then their lack of pre agreed procedure allowed everything to go belly up.

I have no idea what happened to this channel. This channel used to be one of my favourites but it's almost as if the owner of the channel, after seeing how largely successful it's become, has either given up on or it sold it to someone else who is content with re-uploading videos that have already been uploaded on this channel before, which, of course, is a real shame. I used to always wait in anticipation for Thursday to come to see what new video would be uploaded to this channel but for the past few weeks and months, it's just been re-upload after re-upload. Take it from me, everyone, and take a leaf out of the owner of this channel's book and give up on it. I highly recommend checking out Green Dot Aviation instead; he doesn't upload weekly like this channel does but his videos are so much better than the re-uploads posted on here - not to mention how in-depth he goes about the incident he's talking about in the video - it's like watching a documentary on Netflix or something. This channel has had a very sharp demise as of late and it's sad to see.

That airport has NOTHING on landing conditions of the places I have seen in the Philippines. They land those aircraft and they have full brake and reverse, and they do a 180 degree turn at the end of the runway, and finally come to a complete stop back where they first touched down. This isn't "once in a while" this is flight after flight after flight after flight. Takeoff is the same in reverse, full throttle to the end of the runway, where they do a 180 and finally get off the ground at the point of where they first started, and barely clear the palm tree located just behind the airport... I wished I had a camera. I sat there for several hours watching this fiasco thinking... man those aircraft carrier pilots that always brag about short landings... they don't even know what a short landing is! lol
