hey jingles, pro tip for small paint work, use the needles yes but get yourself a small block of Polystyrene and some long leather needles, or syringe heads, other style is having tooth pics that you super glue on to a spot that is easy to clean and then paint last or of possible, hide your crime by doing it in a side of the work that will not be visible after its all assembled. good luck and happy buildin :)

Happy Birthday. And well, painting black... Overalls get washed. They also lose their dye, they get stained, and dusty. All these things help with showing detail and of course, dry-brushing dark blue onto a black base has a great effect. Never get disheartened by black. Or white come to that. They're just the same as all the other colours, have confidence!

If you want simple and trouble free decal application, use a paint brush to remove small decals from the backing sheet and then use the brush to apply the decal to the part. You will find if you use your hand it usually sticks to your fingers and not the plastic part. Nice job though Jingles really liking this series.

Jingles! Top tip: for your brass parts paint them a shiny bright white gold like retributor armour and then shade with Agrax earthshade and highlight with a bright silver like runefang steel.

Hi Jingles, a bit of advice I've seen for painting scale ship models that might help you out some is to lighten up the colors a bit rather than using the exact shade. This is supposed to provide a scale effect and imitate looking at the subject from a distance. For example, black would be a more mid-grey that would give you more freedom to use light and dark tones to spruce up your models. I think that could help with your issue of dark colors appearing too dark for details. Anyways, fantastic work as always, even if it does seem too good for someone just getting back into the hobby. Cheers!

One solution for painting very small parts is to paint them *before* you remove them from the sprue, then patch up the spot where it was attached after you've cut it off.

You really need to watch Plasmo, and Night Shift. I've been building models since I was 5. (I'm 51) I've learned more from them since I started watching them. I had 30 years of following Games Workshop's painting and modeling articles before that. I can't stress enough just how much they can teach you. Also for finishes diorama work check out what model railroaders are doing. Those people are crazy with their detailing work.

Reminds me of painting two of my Forge World Armageddon Pattern Bassilisks and Medusae. I have three of each. I only painted the inside of one of each and glued the rear ramp of the other four shut after painting their insides in bleached bone citadel colour. They have almost the same multi-part interior with only two parts different between the Bassilisk and the Medusa: The main gun and the Sub-floor ammo storage and hydraulics. (B=howitzer M=siege mortar, think 155mm PzHbz2000 and 400mm ww1 Skoda respectively) The floor of the fighting compartment consisted of a rectangular resin cast containing ammo storage and misc exposed hydraulic and electromechanical components, a brass laser etched floor grate that had to be slightly filed to size and was sharp as fuck along the edges before sanding or filing, and a, usually very warped with flash everywhere, resin floor texture frame with all the hinges, lifting handles and obligatory rivets out the waszoo. So first you straighten the resin, then dry fit and file to size, then glue brass grate to floor texture frame and then paint inside the component tray and top of the floor as well as the rest of the fighting compartment, breech assembly and rear ramp, masking the glue facings with stickyputty before assembly. Also, happy birthday Paul! Do something you find worth remembering until your centennial!

Well, Jingles, these large scale fantasy miniatures have boxart usually painted by top of the top, world class professional painters. Don't go "half as good as that" route, there's only frustration to be found there. And it's not even about the talent, it's about the practise. One time I spoke to a painter of that calibre (there was some vodka involved as well). He told a story of how he got good - painting 8-10 hours per day for months. It costed him his then-relationship. Sure, he got to a point of being comissioned by G.R.R. Martin to paint miniatures for him, but it all came with a price, and he was determined to get to that point. I say, paint it so that you like it. Nevermind the boxart.

If you are using Citadel shades for the washes then they should come out pretty matt (unless you use the gloss versions of course), just make sure that you shake the ever-living crap out of them. Then shake them again, shake them like the first time you found your mum's underwear catalogue. You want to make sure that you cannot see any solids in the bottom and they should be fine. As for the transfer shinies, just get some of GW's Lahmian medium (again, shake the shite out of it) and paint over with that, it will dull them down perfectly.

Painting black clothing on figures is preferable to white. Shep Paine, god of scale modeling (god rest his soul), in his book "How To Build Dioramas", gave some advice on how to paint white clothing on scale figures: "Don't". LOL! I highly recommend buying the actual book, by the way. It is a fantastic source of information on things that make dioramas look right. Keep building and having fun!

Another great video! Really enjoying these. As an aside, have you thought of looking into some reverse action tweezers? The olive drab used is much too dark, which is why the lettering of the decal wouldn't show up against it. Russian olive drab is a much lighter shade. An example of it can be seen here: midwestmodelrr.com/product/val70967/ Yes, the trick to contrast is to use a related color but several shades darker. Model kits, being small, need high contrast for their details to be seen at any kind of distance. I'd have painted the box dark brown, drybrushed it in a light tan or sandy wood color, and then washed it in brown to tie the colors together. There's a trick for painting circular or cylindrical objects, especially ones that need stripes. Get a tool that can spin things slowly, like an electric screwdriver. Mount the object on a stick or stiff wire so that's it's squared along the line of axis. Then turn on the device and hold your brush in one place as the object to be painted rotates in contact with the brush. Voila! Straight, even lines produced like a boss. The technique can also be used for base coats of the same objects. Makes painting tires and the rubber on tank bogies easy too. Another old favorite painting trick: Get some small steel ball bearings and drop two or three into your paint bottles. When you shake the bottles to mix the paint, they make the process more efficient.
