Peter Wright should be pushed out to Centre Half Forward. He played his best footy at the Suns at CHF. Harry Jones to Full Forward. Lewis Hayes deserves his senior debut soon, especially now that Zach Reid is out again for the long-term. Saad El-hawli definitely looks the goods. Tsatas needs more time at the VFL level. He'll come good. Essendon may want to seriously check Cam Zurhaar's availability at the end of the season. Keep up the great work guys. 😊

Definitely agree on moving 2MP up the ground. It gives him more room to run and mark. He's got a good tank and with his long kicking he can get the ball deep inside 50 quickly, letting players like Langers and Stringer go one on one with opponents. Maybe give our new Don Saad a run up forward, kid's got plenty of upside.

The forwards need to create space.Players should draw their opponents away and leave a mobile marking player like Langford, Stringer or Jones one on one.The other forwards then set up a wall between centre and half forward to prevent the defence from clearing the ball.Once Draper is available, Wright goes to the VFL

100% - Blues were polished and we were wasteful. Can't fault our boys for the way they kept fighting. Feels like I've been saying the same thing about missing Draper and Parish in the middle but that's how important they are. Draper and his follow up work, Parish gives our midfield better shape in the contest. Another point with Draper in, 2MP can focus solely on being a forward but when he has to split his time between forward and ruck he isn't as influential I feel. Back to the team performance though it is more process than personnel and that is fixable. On Tsatas fair call he's been used sparingly as the sub, hasn't had time to adjust to the game. Call me crazy but I would persevere with him. I think back to when we had to get all those top up players. We got no value out of them apart from Stringer. They may have served their purpose in the short term but after they left we faced the same issues with our list. If we had have played more of our younger stars in the making, the experience gained might have served the club in the longer term. The break has indeed come at a good time.

@@absolutelyessendon for sure he might be looking a bit raw currently and the coaching panel would know him best. There is a line between playing someone who isn't ready and giving someone time to transition from VFL level to AFL level. Maybe using him as the sub whilest seemingly unfair is the best option right now. It's a cut throat competition.

I agreed wholeheartedly. You can’t win games when you kick 16 behinds. Langford seems to have lost his Mojo. Last year he was clutch and one of the best kicks in the game from nearly every sport in the forward 50 he’d get it but he missed shocking shots the last two weeks. Peter wright needs to be more consistent too and Jake Stringer needs to stop trying too hard to be clutch and become consistent. Hopefully the bye gives them time to focus on their craft.

In cricket they say catches win matches. Catches are basic. In AFL kicking goals is the basic thing and not kicking goals doesn't win you a game. At one point Essendon had the same number of goals that Carlton had behinds. Carlton had the number of goals Essendon had behinds. Essendon had 69 points and Carlton had 96. Talk about doing things in reverse. We needed to bring our eyes down going in the forward line. Bomb it long only works if you're moving the ball at ludicrous speed into the forward line. Funny thing was that in the first few games we were dead eye dicks.

DT I think you read my mind! I'm still in that phase where, for me, the list has too many gaps to compete with the top teams. I'm just never convinced. My biggest concern is 2m Peter. I just don’t think he’s very good, where many seem to think he's good. He is fine when the ball is delivered on a platter perfectly, but hopeless in a contest and has been for years. I just don’t get the hype with him. His hands are a foot higher than everyone else, yet the ball bounces off them and he goes to ground. Always plays well against weak opposition. I find him lazy. I would give Caddy a run and Pete to the VFL. Jonesy and Langford can at least take a contested mark. But agree its time for Jones to step up a bit more. Martin should be up forward period. He's a great player, up there with Merrit for me. Wasted down back. Great analogy of the half back position. Another big backman is needed to support McKay - Zach Reid seems too injury prone and we wont ever see him. I am old enough to remember Gumbleton :) What a waste. Essendon just doesn’t have enough star players unfortunately. And I predict with draw after the bye, they will fall to 9th. Brad Scott is going to have to make some tough list calls end of this year. I still think he’s the right coach though. Living in Sydney I often go along to watch the Swans play and it astounds me how cohesive and skilled that team is, and I wonder why Essendon can't be like that! Happy to be proven wrong (here’s hoping).

I don’t think Wright is working as the second ruck, he seems cooked trying to get back to forward line after rucking, there was so much bombing into forward line but forwards were not moving. The set shots were just shocking, especially compared to Carlton. Could not trust anyone to kick a goal. 1.5 at quarter time was terrible and it continued all night. Two goals kicked from goal square. All big forwards out of form, might have to give Caddy another go. The good thing was we fought till the end, and held a lot of territory. If we get Duursma back and El-Hawli on wing that might make a big difference. Yes why did we have to put up with them announcing Carlton players, very strange…

I was scorned on social media a few weeks ago saying that Peter Wright is a problem in our forward line. Since his return after suspension he has had little impact playing forward and I note that Langford hasn't been at his best. In my opinion, both players need to work with space. I think Wright might be better up the ground and leave Langford at full forward. Maybe even play Caddy instead of Wright. Also I heard a rumour that Tsatas is somewhat lazy and doesn't take instructions well. I hope it's just a rumour. Anyway, enjoying your podcast from a Bali holiday

Had to watch this across a couple days - but your thoughts regarding Tsatas and his management are spot on. The kid put on a great amount of size on the offseason because he is an INSIDE mid. It's similar management as Hobbs. When Parish has been in and out of the team with injury over the last 2 years, I thought it would be Hobbs' chance to take that role as he likes to get in and under. Then again, I thought Tsatas may be given the chance. Instead, Hobbs gets majority of is minutes in the forward line, and Tsatas gets 12 minutes at the end of every game.

As the former assistant bombers coach Robert Shaw said to Matthew Lloyd once , “ you are going to cost us a grand final with your wayward kicking “ , ask Matthew what he did ? Always felt like our early season accuracy was an outlier, was just my view of it anyway. I cannot look at our mob & pick 4 or 5 very good kicks for goal, which is pretty much what we need. We can only really look back at our 99-01 team to see that level, we had Lloyd, Lucas, Mercuri, Hird, Bewick, Caracella, Long etc who were all excellent kicks for goal.. I can barely name 2 now, & those 2 are out of form anyway. It's a recruiting thing partly, eg who was the last player we recruited with a top 12 or so pick where we heard as one of their strengths kicking / kicking for goal.. I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel to think of one, let alone a handful. Therefore, I don't think it's something we can fix that easily

agreed wright needs to work on his marking, he seems flat after his suspension and maybe second guessing before he commits to crashing the pack. But wright is performing a useful duty of pulling the key defenders away. The main problem is that our forwards just stand there, there is no movement and no one creating leads or making space. Heck even someone guarding the goal square as we gave away about 7 rushed behinds that should have been shepherded through. But our mids now have no option but to bomb it long into the forwards as there is no space for them to kick into...

Because of his height he got his hands to the ball first. Why he just didn’t clunk the mark instead of automatically tapping it to ground just amazes me. You just don't see that on TV. So you have definitely touched on the elephant in the room. Tsatas comments are spot on. Brad Scott's presser after the match hit the nail on the head. Great show, thanks.

I thought we would have went in with one less tall. Was hoping jones was going to be a late out and we put Roberts in. A 4 goal loss to carlton is no way near as bad as a 2 goal loss to the sun's. The problems have been there forever and nothing changes. If carlton was inaccurate as us and we won, we still wouldn't be addressing the issues. Scott doesn't like change. You nearly could say that second half was our best half of footy this year. The talent is there, just got to go about it a bit different. If they do play tsatas, they need to throw him in the inside and let either durham or Caldwell go to the outside, where they can be more damaging. Dekonig taking it out of the ruck and strolling past Goldstein to hit targets inside 50 hurt us a lot

Wright needs to do some serious work on his core strength over the pre season. For a guy whos 2M a junior could push him away in a marking cotest, hes that weak. He needs some serious core strength.

And by the way, I get sick of the smoke and mirrors bullshit of modern ‘AFL talk’ - ‘he runs good patterns’, ‘they have a good system’, ‘we couldn’t get our structure right’, ‘couldn’t play our style of game’, and having small forwards running around chasing opposition backmen but not kicking any goals and getting congratulated for their work. Watching Leon Baker videos should be standard educational tutorials for all Essendon players under 6’ 6”.

In Wright's defense i think his confidence has been shattered after the suspension and he is confused on how to play his natural game, maybe a bit timid that he could hurt someone again as well

@@absolutelyessendon Never brutish but he had presence in a marking contest and clunked a few, always brought it down to ground now he goes up with one hand or is not even in position to have a crack and when he does his hands are smeared in butter. Brutal but fact based analysis. All I want, have wanted for nearly two decades is the insidious Dodoro COMPLETELY out of recruiting. If people actually knew 'how' Dodoro came to our club you would be staggered. Peter Wright aint the answer. What I'd give for a new Scotty Lucas/Lloyd, or a Roger Merrett/Salmon spine. Scott and his coaching team need to smarten up with selection and 'where' they truly believe promising players with talent are positioned. Great stuff.

The only thing I'm thinking is. If we keep playing like this and still make the finals unfortunately we're going to give opposition supporters more reason to continue with that dreaded finals win countdown. Also, is our small sized midfield players coming back to haunt us, Carlton's midfielders were towering over ours, they looked huge.

Carlton supporter here, and I totally agree needing to be a hard arse with injury prone players. Durability is important and some players just can't get their body right. Blues have 3 very good footballers who just cannot get on the park, yet year after year get another contract hoping they finally get it right. Now they have around a number of years so not sure it's the same for your guys but I say you have to make the tough calls.

That shot he had on goal said a lot, I think stringer was on his left calling for it... my memory could be wrong but I feel like laverde ran at him on a lead demanding it (probably not laverde lol)... he looked uncomfortable and stresses and tried to wind up, thinking I gotta nail this to show I'm good... and the result wasn't good. He needs confidence. That told me his team mates know he's struggling. He's probably got the goods, but needs his head in the right place I think. Vfl I think he needs to grow the maturity, and a bit more strength. Some say give him a full game and chuck him in mid, but that might hurt him more. Dunno I'm a bit conflicted lol

Grim stuff. All the post game analysis i heard since the game is valid. I'll just say if we had kicked goals more than points the mood would be different. We did enough work to win that game. Start of the season i thought our front half was our weakest area, then after first couple of round i was like, hey what am i worried about? Now im worried again. Im so conflicted. Lets see how the next few weeks unfold, its about the journey, not the destination... right fellas? Right?? Whos with me???

Great coverage as always - I think with 2m Peter - it might be a between the ears issue after being swatted out of the game for 4 weeks for blasting into packs. I think it may have made him a bit gun-shy. I also think he is better when he is sitting up the front, not following around the field. I am still a bit confused by one thing. We keep talking about system - yet we start the year with 2 rucks and when Drapper is injured, we don't bring in a second ruck - we run Goldie solo. I would have thought if it was system over personnel keeping structure and system by playing Bryan to replace Drapper would have been the way to go and give Goldy the chance to do some mentoring. It might be me but there seems to be a bit of say one thing do something else.

Wright to VFL to learn how to be an uncompromising arsehole and Bryan to forward line with ruck duties on forward line and Goldstein a kick behind play. Bryan kills them at VFL level, you cannot ask more from him than that. He is good enough to get the tempo at AFL just given the opportunity for more regular games. How much worse-off can we be. Bryan can actually do stuff at ground level too.
