Imagine Iraq. Then imagine pop music. Dashni Morad is now in her tenth year as the leading successful singer of modern pop in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. From the little girl whom fled Saddam Hussein’s tyranny to the strong woman whom challenged the status quo, Dashni tells us her heartbreaking coming of age tale.
Born in the city of Sulaimanya, raised in Netherlands, lost between two cultures and struggling between accomplishing dreams. Dashni Morad, a Kurdish/Dutch Pop singer and a TV personality who was known for her show on Kurdistan TV “Bi Control”, flee Kurdistan at the age of eleven to become a refugee in Netherlands due to the unstable political situation in Iraq and Kurdistan. Since moving to the Netherlands, Dashni, worked hard to accomplish being a musician and a TV presenter to entertain the Kurdish audience since it was much needed at the time in Kurdistan. Today, she is recognized as a national and international artist who broke through the impossible to give the gift of modern music to Kurdistan and presenting it outside of the Middle East region. Her songs presented messages such as women empowerment, peace, and the love for Kurdistan. She, however, didn’t stop at making music and TV presenting, she also founded a small non-profit under the name “Green Kids” supporting education to the kids of Kurdistan, as well as, raising funds for refugees and IDPs in Kurdistan, and also many group and student participation to clean the mountains of Kurdistan.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Dashni you are an amazing person. Don't take negative comments too serious ... make positive come out of negative and thats what you've done. People of middle east have one thing in common they'r all judgemental mostly towards women. And you can not be loved by all ! there will always be some people who will always judge you and talk shit... You should never let those small minded people to have negatives in your life. Also Kurdistan is better than most neighbouring countries ... we'r more open. No one can be loved by all especially famous people and the ones in media . Even OBAMA is hated by some lol I'm as man proud to hear you here talk on TEDx and you are smart bright beautiful girl and i think you have done some great things that helped many people in kurdistan. I like to make 1 recommendation if i may please... try to get involve with some politics to try become a member of parliament AND I"M SURE YOU CAN AND GAIN LOTS OF VOICES ... We need more smart open minded people like you to be part of our leader ship . Then you will be able to make some huge changes in kurdistan and have the voices of Kurdish females and struggles heard.. Imagen one day you be able to make some changes in some laws that will benefit our people and women in particular in the future generation. That will have a huge impact to our society.

Starting a conversation with a real and truly emotional cry ? As a therapist, I have been studying her a lot for the past few years ( and followed her music career) but she is a girl (not a woman) with a torn and corrupt soul and a classic BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). Since 5 years of age and going through so much, it is not possible to just brush it off and come out of all this without developing some sort of personality disorder.

Dear Dashne; I dont the kurds in kurdistan are all able to comprehend the message you are conveying. But to all of us living abroad, we have the luxury of seeing things from different perspectives. At least most of us who are clever enough to discover our own identity. Anyway tho, you did great as always. You are a great rolemodel 👍🏽

Hello & Thank you for educating me regarding the Kurdish people. Today I sought to understand your peoples unending plight to gain & keep your own country. My heart is sad that (as you mention) that we as humans can not make our goal to find Connection with all others thru the eyes of LOVE vs choosing war. Blessings to your people, family, & friends to find strength, safety, & peace, I pray Turkey will also stop this & seek a non-violent solution .

Not very well written. If she told me her story that way I can't help her she need to give deeper meaning and more information. She was just trying to get attention to herself.Honestly her father saved her future.Other people didn't get saved. Also she has very poor self-image.

You no longer allow them to define you. Thank you. Hope is an essential. Courage is an essential. Now ... listen with your heart and mind ... The prefix "en" means "to wrap, as in a blanket." So ... to "enjoy the day" really means to "wrap the day in joy." There is another "en" word we do not use very well. It is to "encourage" someone. "Cour" meant Heart. Building ... heart ... strength. We have lost courage ourselves. But so many need that coat named "Courage," but somehow it has been stripped away and stolen from them. They have been beaten down, betrayed. They have been betrayed by those to whom they would bring greatness and freely give beauty beyond hope. They are, themselves, "discouraged," often for life itself. To "encourage" is to wrap someone in that great and ancient coat, named "Courage!" ... often when they need it most. And we all need it. Give it freely, but with kindness and strength, so it really means something of value. It often takes only a kind word, a moment of listening, giving an example for Life. You have encouraged (wrapped in the great-coat of courage) an often dis-couraged old man. Thank You, Dashni Morad
