Have you thought about using a come along to retrieve heavy items? If you don't know what that is it's a small hand crank winch. You'd need to have somewhere to anchor it like a hand rail or post and you could even attach a grappling hook to the end. A simple come along would be easy enough to pack around in your bucket or backpack and they are fairly inexpensive. You'd want a small one that uses cable not chain, they are usually rated for around 2 ton it's a very common tool. You could even use it to pull really hard on a stuck magnet.

You know I was thinking the very same thing. I noticed he had a van but I had to pick up at one time that I bought used and it came with a electric and a boom setup. The guy that had it before me was a mechanic and would lift engines into his truck with it but I found many other uses for it when trying to load anything into the back of the the pickup. I had a simple plywood ramp and using that boom in the ramp I could load just about anything into the back of that pickup that a tow truck could haul off. The treble hook some wire rope and a winch of some kind and you can clean up that canal I'm just about anything. If you could get the boom close enough to the wall you could lift things straight up with almost no effort. I've never seen this before and think it's absolutely great for many reasons. You have all the excitement and the thrill of treasure hunting and you are doing a wonderful service by cleaning up the man-made items out of the canal which improves the ecology of the canal. As a lifelong sport and commercial fishermen it's like a cross between marlin fishing and trot lining when you hook into something you just never know what's going to be on the other end.

Leigh, I watched a short clip about a museum that just opened in Amsterdam. The drained 2 canals, and dug 60 feet down in the mud and things from the 1500's came out at 60 feet. The deeper they dug the older. Do you know anything about it? Be cool if you did a video of the museum

You should tie a grappling hook to the other end of your line to facilitate getting heavy objects up to the ledge. When you've pulled it to the wall, just hold the magnet-end and lower the hook down to make sure the loot doesn't fall. Also, two people can pull at the same time.
