Guys when you build a house out in the middle of nowhere you are going to have mice. You will have a mouse problem for years. That is just how it goes when you live out where no other houses are. It is life. If this was my house I would get some barn cats. Cats really help with mice and rats and snakes. We had a mouse problem and they got in my washer and dryer and pee peed and I dryer some stuff and it was not good. Had to buy new washer and dryer. If you use a vacuum I recommend getting a new one as the pee and poo get into the tiny crevices and then your carpet will start smelling. I went thru a mouse problem. The only way we control it is all the cats in my neighborhood. We have not seen one mouse poo in three years. We had to get new couch and chairs as the poo and pee was inside the couch where we could not get to without cutting the couch. Good luck. I pray you don't have to buy all new stuff like I had too. It was a nightmare. In the summer if you start smelling something off it might be your rugs and couches or other stuff that the mice peed on.

Don’t worry Bonnie ❤️! The home I grew up in was in the country side, surrounded by open fields and not a lot of other homes. If a door was left the smallest bit open for even a second we were sure to have a mouse ! Or the smallest crack in a wall/door we would have more, I think one winter we must have caught 12 in a much smaller size home than yours until we found how they were getting in !! So scary and feels so invasive but you’re not alone and hopefully all those pesky mice will be out of your beautiful home soon ❤ You are doing everything that can be done. Praying you feel peace during this time, even though you might feel it is a small issue and there are bigger things to worry about it is 100% valid to feel this way and anyone who has put so much time and effort into creating a home would understand and feel the same way !

As I had to deal with this kind of situation I wanted to give you some hints. Line up lots of mice traps in cabinets and along the floors if first trap does not get them then the second or third one will. My favorite trap looks like a giant claw works great and easy to reset. Also later on down the road you might want to set up owl boxes that helps control mice. Still to this day I have traps in my cabinets set just in case as it was that stressful. Good luck hope you get all the mice.

As someone who has dealt with mice my entire life a few tips Put all food in bins or glass, spearmint (mice hate spearmint), hanging clothes (check all pockets and hoods) mice love making g nest in those places, pancake syrup on traps mice love it same with peanutbutter and margarine, vaccum bag clothing then into bins, there's no such thing as too many traps, check every nook and cranny daily bc they can make new access points in hrs, wire mess only does so much (I've seen the chew right through it), live traps are trash because they know how to get in so releasingthem just give them the opportunityto come back in righg away. For context I live in a 40 year old single wide in the middle of the woods surrounded by farms and exterminators tell us there is nothing they can do to help us because of where we're located and what we live in. I say get yourself tons of outdoor cats lol. We have 12 outdoor cats (one stray turned into 12 in just over a year) and we don't really hear or see mice anymore.

Bonnie, all it takes is 1 little hole. Wanna hear my mouse story?? K, buckle up. I bought a little 40 year-old brick ranch. The kind w/3 small bedrooms, 1 bathroom, an eat in kitchen, & a carport. I wish I had a carport, but someone had converted mine to a bedroom @ one point.🙄 I was a broke single Mom with a 6 year-old & frankly, our apartment was nicer, in fact it was brand new when I moved in a year before. But the rent was going up & my house payment was lots lower in this little house, so I bought it. It was nothing special to look at but it was ours. I fixed it up, put gutters & shutters on it, painted the outside, re-did the bathroom myself, & painted inside. It still was nothing special but I was grateful to give my son a house with a yard again, it was clean, I’d fixed it up as best I could & would keep tackling little jobs as time and $ allowed. One day something caught my eye & all of a sudden I realize I’m seeing a hole, about the size of a 50-cent piece, right smack in the middle of my ceiling-kinda over the eating area. Something had gnawed a darn hole, from above, right through the sheetrock?!? What on earth!!! Bonnie, I tell you I never called my Dad so fast in my life! They lived in TX, & I lived in GA & I was really wishing they were not so far away. Something was inside my house! With us!! My Dad told me what to do & you better know I did 👏🏻every 👏🏻single 👏🏻thing he recommended. We knew the “Country Mouse” (as my son named him) had come in via the ceiling but would likely take the easiest way out, which was under the sink as there was space around the plumbing to the crawl space. Now, I could not deal with traps so I went the poison route & put it in the crawl space. Dad assured me it makes them go looking for water so he wouldn’t come back inside. Please, ✋don’t tell me any different right now. If my Dad was just telling me that so I wouldn’t keep panicking, that’s OK. This happened back in 1998 & I’d forgive him anyway. I’m perfectly happy to continue to live in my ignorance. Let’s all agree we’re gonna let that little fib stay with him… in the grave. If I need more closure on that, he & I can always discuss it the next time I see him again, in heaven. 🤣🤦🏼♀️ Then, I used some expanding foam stuff to seal up around all the pipes leading to the crawl space. So once I sealed that up, he told me to get a patch kit to fix the ceiling but to stuff the hole with steel wool before patching it. It must have worked cuz I never saw any trace of “Country Mouse” ever again, & let me tell ya, 🫣 I was looking. I feared the thing had been on my kitchen table as the hole in the ceiling was over the table. My Mom convinced me I could just wipe the table off with disinfectant, & that I did not, in fact, need to burn the thing in the backyard. I do sympathize with you & am very glad to see you’ve got a plan in place to get things cleaned up & comfortable for you, Joel, & the kids again. Thanks for attending my Ted Talk on “Our Country Mouse”. 😂😂

I noticed Joel's Today's task video where he was setting traps he wasn't wearing gloves. I was always told to wear gloves when setting mouse traps because of human scent. I'd have the same reaction as Boston if I saw a mouse as well. Lol

Hi Bonnie, I'm so sorry you have to go through this :( What my dad used to do in his old house in the countryside when he thought mice were around was to put a mixture of flour and gypsum powder in little plates all over the house for the mice to eat (they love flour). It kills them quite instantly after eating. Hope this will help. Best of luck xxx

So how did they get in? Any tips on preventing this?

We had a mouse we couldn’t get rid of for a month. The only thing that worked was using gloves to set the traps and peanut butter! Apparently they can smell your hands on the traps sometimes

Where did you get your couches

Also protip. Check your dryer vents they can go in there because it's warm. Ugh this sucks. I'm sorry you guys have to go through this. I had to deal with birds in my vents. They ate through insulation, and ending up inside the crevices and then had babies. Waited until the baby birds were gone. Removed the nest and cleared them out, sealed up the vents. I'm so happy I don't have to deal with hearing birds in my closet

You guys are minimalists with less things to wipe down & that's a huge plus. Wondering & confused if your sink cabinet doors tightly close (where the peeps were) or other cabinetry doors are tight how could mice get Inside? Sending love & hugs your way.

I wouldn't even know where to start on that cleanup, but it looks like you have a plan. A good nights sleep helps and you'll get it figured out. If I ever saw your family in public, I wouldn't say HI. I would maybe smile, but would feel I would just give you your privacy. Nothing personal at all. Your new home will soon be a place of peace and refuge. Bless you guys.

Oh my goodness… so many things in this vlog. You drove right through my area in MO and I was super sad we didn’t run into each other! I would’ve said hi or even frantically waved as we drove down the highway. I have two cats and a toy poodle/ shih tzu mix (dog) we have mice but they don’t last long because the animals hunt them down and ummm off them and then make sure we know because they get treats for it. We live an in old manufactured home so the cost to permanently fixing the issue is more then the house is worth. But with that being said after you move back in pay attention to lady because she mights be hearing, seeing, or smelling something you’re not and alerting you to it. It can be very helpful. Also it happens. It’s the real world. No need to feel bad or embarrassed by it 💕

A trick my dad showed me once is that you always want to place two traps together. Think of the distance a mouse would jump when jumping over the first trap and thats where you place the second trap. The mouse will jump the first trap and land in the second trap. Always place the traps along the wall where they will travel. You can even place large cardboard boxes over the traps with entry and exit doors, they feel safer when the traps aren't in large open areas. Hope this helps, i know i have always been successful with these tricks! ❤

Hi, I had a bad mouse problem a couple years back. We went on amazon and found some electronic mouse traps. I believe they are called Owltra mouse traps. They worked like a charm and haven't had a mouse sighting in a long while.

I found that glue traps are the best, with peanut butter for bait. Also, once you've cleaned the room, spray it with peppermint spray, it's sold on amazon and lot's of places. In theory, mice won't go back in a spot sprayed with peppermint spray. I used to get them under my sink. The mice would come in through my garage, and make their way in to the walls, and up through the pipes. So, I sprayed the pipes and all the entrance ways around the pipes with peppermint. That was in October. I have resprayed 3-4 times. No more mice since October.
