How do you feel about this? What are your booktube pet peeves, the mistakes you think booktubers make, etc.?
@nikisepehrinejad90805 жыл бұрын
I'm okay with sponsorships but I hate how repetitive it gets. When every booktuber is explaining the plot of the same book and 90% of them don't even end up reading it.
@christinez65435 жыл бұрын
It does seem that there is more pressure to be perfect if you have a beauty channel than if you have a book channel. I personally like watching a book channel because it does seem like the person can really be themselves. I give you huge props for doing both types of channels! Great vid!!
@ericavandegrift62195 жыл бұрын
Over editing videos annoys me. It’s ok to pause while talking. We all do it. You don’t need to edit out every pause. Some booktubers do this and it makes me feel like I’m watching a dvd that is scratched and constantly skipping. I counted 4 skips in one sentence by a booktuber the other day. An occasional skip isn’t a big deal. Multiple skips in EVERY SENTENCE SPOKEN is too much. My other pet peeve is videos with 5 minutes of the booktuber advertising stuff before the actual video starts. I understand that they got sponsored so they have to find a way to talk about the sponsor, but some just go on for sooooo loooooong with their sponsor stuff. And they do it in every video.

The beauty channel vs booktube makes sense, in that one deals mostly with objective issues, while the other is about subjective opinions. Add to that the importance of the visual with beauty stuff, and the more cut-throat business of the products. Yeah can see why opinions, especially differing ones, would cause problems in the world of beauty. While when talking about books, it's all about the opinions - that's what we sign up for, be they the same or different to our own. The main pet peeve I have with booktubers is about the Best (x number) Books of Genre Y lists. They seem to be soo much alike, mostly very well known or hyped books. When I look at my friends and me who all love fantasy/scifi.. our top 5s would be very different. It's hard to believe there seems to be such consensus on what books are most loved.
@BookswithEmilyFox5 жыл бұрын
@@robpaul7544 I think I can partially answer that one! There are so many list on the internet with the best ones and they're usually the main ones recommended so people start with them but at the same time if you fail to mention them in your "best" people go insane in the comment section. I did a "beginners' guide to sci-fi" explaining they weren't hard sci-fi and were meant to be more... digestible that other ones so that people that never read sci-fi can try it. So. many. comments. telling me I didn't have the classics in there... That was on purpose duh lol

Hi Emily! I've never commented on any of your videos before, but I felt the need to in this one. I just watched the part where you said you feel more free in the book channel/community than in the beauty one, because the beauty community is more rigid and people don't care that much about personality. I wanted to let you know that, personally, one of the things I enjoy most about your videos (I follow you in both channels) is the energy you have in them, your sarcastic and witty comments, and also the simplicity (even though I can totally see and appreciate the hard work behind them), which is very refreshing. I'm sorry you feel you can't share that part of you in your beauty channel, but just keep in min some (most?) of us really, REALLY enjoy it. Ok I'm continuing with the video now. It’s disheartening to hear all the cr@p you put up with on your beauty channel. I subscribed to your Booktube channel because I love your beauty channel so much - I really appreciate your honesty, your sense of humour, your obvious passion for makeup. I like that when a product is good you say it’s good, even if it’s from the drugstore; and when a product is bad, you say that it doesn’t work for you, even if it’s the hottest new high-end launch. I can be a beauty snob and gravitate towards high-end products. But thanks to you, I’ve found some wonderful drugstore products that really are just as good as items 3x their price. I used to follow some of those “million subscriber” beauty KZbinrs, but I’ve unsubscribed from all of them at this point. Their success changed so many of them - it became all about sponsorships and showing off their awesome new lifestyles rather than sharing a passion for beauty with their viewers. And I can’t even get into the ridiculous “drama”... At this point, I predominantly follow European beauty channels because there’s far less of that nonsense going on. These women seem far more comfortable just being who they are and talking about what they like. They’re genuine - and that’s what I like about you as well. I may be weird, but I like seeing chipped nails and a first impressions video where the makeup doesn’t come out perfect in the end. Why? Because I can relate to that. I don’t always have the time to refresh my manicure right away and some makeup products I try work HORRIBLY for me. It’s real life. Anyway - sorry for the extreme length of this comment. I just wanted you to know that this viewer very much appreciates you (and the content you produce) as you are.

I’m newer to watching booktube videos, but your channel is one of my faves because I do trust your reviews! I’ve discovered a lot of books through booktube videos, and I may not enjoy all the genres or books that are talked about, but I just love hearing people talk about books. I hosted a knitting podcast about 10 years ago, and even back then, the entitlement some people had about their free entertainment was off the charts. It’s even worse now that podcasts and stuff like KZbin are more mainstream, so thank you for doing what you’re doing! :)

Wow I’m honestly really shocked people get mad when you don’t hold up a physical book. And then they’re probably the same people who complain when booktubers collect/hoard too many books. I’m actually still really new to booktube but I’ve been blogging/bookstagramming since 2017 and work with publishers and I am so thankful when they send me things for review. But I’d never accept a sponsorship where they pay for me to say something that isn’t my honest opinion. (but I’m super irrelevant so I totally don’t have sponsorships yet LMAO.) I think it’s great that you like various genres; even if you don’t read contemporary often, it’s still nice to see you enjoy them! So yea, no shade from me if you decide to work with a publisher for a contemporary title. ;) Anyways, this was a fun tag so maybe I’ll do it someday. I really liked your answers!

One thing I don't understand about booktubers, at least American ones (maybe Canadian ones too) is that their sponsorship/promoting it's usually a book they are yet to read? They will be like "I'm partnering with x company to talk about this book that is about this and that.", then later on they read and might not like. In my country people always read the book before posting about the book and saying their thoughts. Not that I think it's bad but I just think talking about a new release before reading it then end up disappointed by it sounds super awkward lol
@deendrew365 жыл бұрын
Jéssica Mota but sometimes when you get a new book, you tend to gush about it and want to share your excitement. I have been super excited about many books that have ended up as “meh”. That’s ok! But maybe those youtubers should do updates. Then it would come across as honest if they were like, “remember that book X I could not buy fast enough? It sucked.” Lol!
@jessicamota80315 жыл бұрын
@@deendrew36 is not even that I think they are dishonest in any way, is just that being hired just to say "this book will be out" and then not liking it sounds awkward. When you read, like it and share your thoughts, both positives and negatives I feel like has more power than they talking about a book out now that they might not like. Definitely understand your point but I feel even from an aspect of person who might buy through watching sponsorship I would prefer their thoughts after reading rather than saying the book will be out/is out.
@deendrew365 жыл бұрын
Jéssica Mota very good point. That would feel like a waste of money to go out and buy a book, only to see the update of “it sucked”. Lol!
@kristinreads51925 жыл бұрын
Yeah! When people tell you the plot and say that they are partnering with whoever but then have not read it?? I feel like the partnership would benefit from having the booktubers opinion on it?
@BookswithEmilyFox5 жыл бұрын
That's something I will touch on during the sponsorship video but... There are different ways to partner with a company for book tubers. -Mention: paid to mention the book, when it's coming out, what it's about, etc. It has its pros (hearing about new book coming out, "opinions isn't bought" (not how I view it but you get it)) but also it's cons (you don't get a review). I'm all for them personally since they're an easy way for booktubers to be paid and if/when they review the book they can say whatever they want!

I LOVE THE LIBRARY! I came from a country where public libraries are more for research and had more textbook/non-fiction books and quite few and far apart. But ever since I moved in the US and found out that getting a library card is FREE and all you need is an ID and a proof of address, I freaked OUT CAUSE FREE BOOKS. And the library system is so AMAZING. Searching books in the catalogs, having them on Hold, picking them up when they're available, having interlibrary loans, and getting access to not just books, ebooks and audiobooks but also music, movies, tv series, documentaries, etc. IS JUST SO FREAKING AWESOME. It's how I read books now. It's perfect really cause I'm the type to buy a book if I have already read it, love it and want to have it in my collection or I know I will love the book/ book series. Books are expensive. And unlike makeup (which I also love) I have drugstore options and they're not "one-time use". I like knowing that I spend my hard-earned money towards books that I know I will cherish and will love looking at and remembering how I felt reading them. Also, ebooks and audiobooks are so convenient, they take up no physical space and makes good use of your time doing mindless tasks. Can you tell I love reading? lol (also whatttttt $80 for a library card????)

Finally someone who thinks that booktube is growing and not dying. I also don't get why anyone would say that. And yes, says who? I fell like now there is a lot more, and a lot more professional booktube available than say 4 years ago when I first started watching it.

I luv watching you in this channel more than the beauty one, but I noticed recently that you are being more urself there too and I loved ur try on video. Don't try to fit u r already awesome ❤️❤️. Let the negative ppl talk 2 themselves.

I am pretty over beauty channels. Loving book, cross Stitching, Paris /travel , yoga channels! But what is your lipstick shade, please? It is really pretty! 😉 Something that was frustrating about beauty videos is that very rarely would they respond to your comments. It didn’t really feel like a community.

It's MAC Honeylove! I still love makeup videos but I think the beauty community is due for a change. Hoping to be able to do that!

I usually don't like when people are negative and have unpopular opinions bashing books just for show, I mean, it depends on how often the unpopular opinions are shown in the channel. If unpopular opinions aren't like 80% of the content it's okay if you didn't like a book and explain your reasons but people are so negative about so many things nowadays that I rather not hear long rants about something that is, in essence, a distraction of subjective taste. I think it's also for this reason that I also don't like long reviews or videos where there is a long vlog about only one book, if a book is good and recommended I am okay with not knowing in long details about it and quickly deciding based on blurb or hype if it's something for me or not. So my favorite videos are wrap ups where at least five books are talked about in short reviews so I have an overview over the booktuber tastes.

I totally agree with you about the [beauty channel] sponsorships. I roll my eyes when they sponsor random ass stuff or click out of the channel cus ... yeah right ...

Happy Birthday! Is the library card fee a one time thing, or do you pay it every year? Thankfully mine was free (Minnesota). Thank you for your comment on book hording. If someone came into my house they wouldn't think I read at all. I just don't reread books so I don't keep them. I use my library, ebooks, and any physical book I donate when I have read it.

I follow you on your beauty channel for a long time now and I absolutely love it when you are yourself :) if I only want to hear about products I can go to a million other channels, but the channels where the creators show an interesting personality are the ones I follow and subscribe to. I do understand what you are saying, but I think that’s such bs of that narrow minded community, a real shame.

Go and swatch a lipstick 😂😂😂 no seriously I feel super sad that you feel pressure in the beauty community. I actually watch your beauty channel and I recognized that you are super sweet and not sarcastic as in your book channel and I kind of miss that attitude in your beauty videos... however just do YOU on both channels! You are funny and pretty and caring about both beauty and books. Don’t let anyone take that away from you! Xxx

When I found booktube I noticed a lot of booktubers agreed whether they liked a book or not, and sometimes I felt they were not being honest with their thoughts, so now I'm really picky with the booktubers that I watch, if I feel they're not honest, I just don't watch them.
@CurrentChapter5 жыл бұрын
Loved to hear your thoughts! I got only one sexist comment in a video and the first thing I thought was about how I would never be able to handle a beauty channel haha I'm really impressed you can do both!

@@BookswithEmilyFox omg haha I didn't expect that, people really are so nice on booktube! But I guess I'll just be prepared for more of those to come 😂

Oh most people are lovely (same on the beauty channel really) but since I mention these topics more on here I get far more dramatic comments in response! I'm just always shocked when people can comment nice things for months and then leave one that's sexist/racist/homophobic... it's sad.
@CurrentChapter5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's super disappointing :/ I guess it makes sense because of the more controversial discussion, to have more stupid comments, but especially to come from people that you wouldn't expect, that sucks! The one I got was completely unrelated to the topic of the video, I don't know if that's better or worse haha

Library cards are usually free for residents of the city you live in. But if you're not a resident, you usually have to pay an annual fee for the library card.

Hey Emily! Loved the video as always! I’ve been wondering if you could make a video of maybe give us your opinion about the eternal debate of YA vs Adult literature. As you do I read a lot of mixed things but sometimes I got caught up in that fight that is oh you should stop reading ya because you are an adult or viceversa, adult books are boring read ya! I would love to hear your opinion but it’s just a suggestion of course, no pressure to do it! Much love ! Btw I love your eyeliner

Hi Emiliy I saw that Assassin‘s Apprentice by Robin Hobb was on your 2018 TBR. Have you read it?
@leenox235 жыл бұрын
i think booktubers tend to dislike this book and choose not to invest in the entire series cause the first book is really a preview ,it's the background needed to understand this amazing series, booktubers don't get that and i'm kind of afraid to see what she thinks about it. all my favorite booktubers hated it ):
@random45465 жыл бұрын
@@leenox23 I loved this series from book one. But it was what really got me into adult fantasy. So I don't know how someone with a fantasy backround would feel about reading it for the first time. But after reading many fantasy books this series still remains my favourite. I know only a few booktubers who have read it. And most of them are as Hobbsessed as I am. Which booktubers are you referring to? I know Merphy read it recently and found it just okay, but she's a plot driven reader and Hobb's writing is all about characters. So I'm curious what other people think. I'm waiting impatiently for the discussion on Worldhoppers.

How do library cards work where you are? You mentioned paying for it. I’m in Sydney. Here, with the public libraries, you can sign up for free and they’re not too particular e.g I live in the Sutherland Shire region (and have a library card with the Sutherland Shire libraries) but I also have a card with the St George Region libraries even though I don’t live in that region - they don’t care. But both were free. The NSW State Library and even some universities let the public signup and borrow from their library for free. So I’m just wondering how your library system works? (I feel like such a nerd asking that haha)
@Sandy7665 жыл бұрын
In Ontario, if your city/town has a library, the card is usually free. But most libraries charge fees for the card, if your a non-resident/out of region.
