You are absolutely right about adding ballast. People really need to take this advice to heart, if your gonna power up your loader .

Absolutely correct: I couldn’t stress it enough that you NEED proper ballast because with out proper ballast you’ll actually only be making the machine worse not better, and you’ll be making it far more dangerous and put more wear and tear on it as well. Thanks for the comment!

@@BiffsEquipment Hey Biff, I just replaced my HST myself on my bx22. Needless to say I put brand new recommended fluid and filter as well as have a clean strainer. I tried lifting several large chunks of firewood rounds and found that the bucket had to be "tilted" via the lever then moved back to the "up" postion and rock the lever back and forth between these two settings to get the bucket to lift at all. Empty the bucket seems to lift like it did before but under weight it sucks. The lever seems to have been sticky or junky feeling ever since I bought it. I do have the backhoe for this machine, but haven't attached it since the repair, as I wanted to run everything for a few hours to make sure my repairs were successful. Maybe I should connect the backhoe to rule out a hydraulic issue vs the bucket control valve? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thx!

Good video! I’ve had two L series tractors ..a 2501 and now a 3902…both tractors were weak on the lift capacity! Checked pressures on both after buying them new! The 2501 was just under 2000 psi and the 3902 was even less about 1900 psi! I searched google and finally found pressure specs! 2349 psi is whats suppose to be on the 3902. I’ve got it around 2500…huge difference in lifting power…I agree that ballast is a must when lifting heavy objects! For safety and distributing load equally to the tractor!

Wow mark nice find! Glad to hear you got it all worked out! Always seems like when someone complains about the tractor not lifting the advertised weight it’s always cuz the dealer doesn’t check the machines and spec the pressures correctly before leaving the dealer.. either that or the relief spring settles after years of use loosing power over time till someone really starts to notice it. Glad it all worked out, thanks for your comment!

Im the kind of guy that don’t mind taking risks and I’m pretty confident that I’ll know when iv gone too far but that’s just me. If you try it let me know how you like it, then again if you don’t have any problems lifting/moving items around your house then I see no point in you increasing it.

From the factory, the pressure relief valve on my 2013 (new) was set to 1775 psi. The FEL hydraulic hoses state 4,000 psi. I added the appropriate shims behind the relief spring bringing the system pressure up to 2,000 psi.........that was 4 years ago and not one bit of trouble. Most if not all standard hydraulic cylinders are designed to operate in the 2,500 to 3,000 psi range.

It’s my understanding that its a good idea to “index” the bolt before loosening it initially, that way you can install it in the same position each time you reinstall it so that you can get consistent readings. Varying tension on that bolt could skew the results because the spring is tensioned differently each time, even if it was torqued down to Kubota specs. Just something to think about. Good info, thanks!
@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 3 жыл бұрын
Great point.. I don’t think it would have a ton of effect on pressure.. say it was torqued at 20ft lbs over 35 ft lbs you may see 1/2 a pound difference in my honest opinion because you can feel where the bolt actually bottoms out when it gets snug so I don’t think it’s actually pushing up against the spring as your threading it in but I could be wrong.. I always test the pressure after anyways so I know where it’s at but I could see how results could vary some if the same torque is not applied each time you remove it.. great thought for sure!
@jonramos2161

That bolt has a machined shoulder that contacts the housing. Bottomed out is bottomed out. The only thing you would change is the required torque to remove.

@BiffsEquipment Жыл бұрын
Hey joan, since you have an older BX the hydraulics are configured a bit differnt, your releif valve should be located at the end of your loader valve where your joystick is. Somewhere near where the lines go into your loader valve you should find a bolt you can turn that may have a jam nut on it to keep it tight. I have never owned or worked on a bx22 so I can’t say exactly but it should be there.. you shouldn’t need any shims either, just turn the valve/bolt in for higher pressure and lock the jam nut back down.. you’ll wanna test the pressure every few turns you make on the bolt.. you may even wanna check it every 1/4 turn depending on how sensitive it is. Best of luck and stay safe!

@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ross, they make a pressure relief valve kit for your tractor .. if you look/search for it on eBay you’ll be able to find what your looking for, at the very least you’ll have to buy the gauge for your tractor as the coupler for the gauge is a differnt size than a B-series tractor .. I’m thinking any B series gauge/coupler should work for yours.. the shims will sometimes come with the gauge but if they don’t you can use thin washers or ask your local Kubota dealer they will typically have them on hand. It makes sense that your relief valve spring is prolly getting weak over the years as this spring does not affect the flow/pressure going to your backhoe which is why you don’t see a difference with your backhoe.. this relief valve only effects your loader pressure. Let me know how you make out, best of luck!

Ok, my assumption that it was the top hose was proof once again of what happens when one assumes...it's the very bottom one. I tested it, 2000 psi. Do you know of something in the selector breaking which could account for that?
@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 3 жыл бұрын
@@davedirect4202 by selector do you mean the loader valve? I mean sure the loader valve itself can wear our over time, there are springs in the valve that can fatigue but usually when that happens the loader valve will feel sticky and not return to center you usually won’t loose power.. if your at 2,000 now then it’s possible you coulda been higher when you bought it maybe it was at 2,200 or soemtbjng when you bought it which is well over spec and then it settled back down to around the spec.. aside from loader pressure there isn’t much that should change it’s lifting abilities.. if you have a collapsed hydraulic hose or a blockage in the system then maybe but odds are if you have proper pressure then you should be fine.

@@bryank4649 ah I see, well more than likely you don’t need all that stuff you bought cuz usually all you need to do is just re-shim the old relief spring but installing a new spring wouldn’t be a bad idea but that should be as far as you have to go.. over time from the spring getting compressed it looses its rebound and when that happens the tractor will slowly loose hydraulic pressure.. by throwing some shims behind the spring you should be all set.. aside from that I would make sure your screen is clean in the trans which often gets clogged up reducing flow from your hydraulic pump.. also change the filter and fluids and you should be all set but keep me posted on how you make out buddy

@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 4 жыл бұрын
Dan Pinkner your idle will be the same.. this only changes at which the pressure dead heads and is limited.. so at low flow conditions like on low idle you won’t see a difference.. one way you can make sure your not restricting your flow at idle or low throttle is to make sure your rear 3-point hitch adjustment knob is all the way loosened.. for whatever reason if you have this valve too tight it will restrict the fluid flow so your loader will not preform as well on low idle tasks.. hopefully this helps dan

As long as you don’t go above 2,000 psi there really is no real risk. If your tractor is under warenteee it will “void” but to be honest no dealer is gonna go checking your shims.. and if you were really worried you could just take the shims out before you had warentee work done cuz they would never know the difference

Wow 2300? That’s super high, I run mine at 2,250 which is like super super pushing it already haha. You don’t need to run it at the relief valve ..testing it at the loader hydraulic manifold is exactly where you should be testing it at. I would if anything say maybe your gauge is in-accurate and I would say maybe go to tractor supply buy second gauge and see what that says.. worst case if it is truly at 2300psi I would actually remove a few shims and take it down to about 2000 psi.. that’s a nice happy medium but if you choose to do this you have to have proper ballast as it can tip very easily so you must be very careful.. also anything high than 1900psi I believe will void your warrantee so def talk time the dealer again and ask TJ speak to someone different this time or even try calling a diffferent dealer all together. RPM's do not affect pressure, only flow rate. RPM's will change the speed at which the implements operate but not their capacity. 500rpm will exert the same PSI as 1500rpm. If pressure fluctuates with RPM then you have a low quality or polluted fluid, expansion somewhere, likely in one or more lines, or fluid seeping around seals. Always regulate a hydraulic system based on the lowest rated component, not the highest.

Your correct in a way but not entirely.. yes adding weight to the back will allow you to lift more in the front which means more weight on your front axle but it’s the way the weight is being distributed as the tractor is working that makes the difference.. when you have proper rear ballast even though your able to put more weight on your front axle because of it the weight is not Awkwardly shifting or bouncing on the front axle since the rear axle is being planted with the proper amount of ballast.. if you did not have the proper amount of ballast then you would be lifting the rear tires in the air forcing your front axle to do not only the steering but the driving, braking and pulling as well as it bouncing up and down on the front axle as you hit bumps.. having rear ballast keeps the weight centered across both axles so it’s much less stressful on your front axle even if you are allowing it to lift more weight.

Sure thing, if you go to www.bxpanded.com you can click on the “Kubota BX” under the drop menu and find/select the pressure increase kit. Comes with the gauge as well as the shims. Also if you search eBay you will be able to find home made kits as well for your machine. Search “Kubota bx hydraulic pressure kit” on eBay and you’ll find it.

Hey Chris, if you call your local Kubota dealer or messicks they will be able to give you the part number in which you can then order it from them or you can do an eBay search for the part number and buy them off eBay:. I bought mine off eBay.. you have 1/4” flat face couplers but they make many different variations of them so you can’t just search 1/4” flat face coupler you gotta locate the Kubota part number for each male/female fitting. Maybe spring should be changed, more times spring releases pressure weaker it will become overtime,, so keep adding numerous shims could be a temporary fix,, when do you stop adding shims ?
@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 3 жыл бұрын
Spring tension on these doesn't weaken that fast, and when it does its a VERY VERY small amount.. most people would never notice the pressure loss or care but for guys wanting the most out of their hydraulic systems this is what needs to be done.. Replacing the spring wouldn't solve the issue cuz that would only bring you back to factory pressures, you would still have to add shims regardless if you wanted the pressure I'm using. Now if the spring was weakening quickly say...loosing 10-50psi per year then yah that would be an issue, but in most cases you may loose 10psi in 5 years or more..so it doesn't really warrant replacing the spring specially when one small shim can get you back there.

It’s possible, you just have to go through the manual or a parts list and figure out where exactly the hydraulic pressure relief valve is located and from there figure out a way to increase the spring pressure/tension while checking it with a gauge. Just be careful as it can be dangerous specially with bigger equipment that’s a lot more capable like a skidsteer haha

There is a LOT more to hydraulic systems than the hoses psi rating. What kind of system is this? Fixed displacement open center (likely)? Pressure compensating? Load sensing (unlikely)? Screwing with the main relief might not even accomplish what you are trying to do. Are there secondary reliefs? An accumulator? You should always have a complete schematic and know what it means before you modify a system.

I don’t see you saying what temperature the fluid should be at when you do the test, from what’s I’m reading in the shop manual the fluid should be at 104-122 degree. I’ve been upping pressure for many years and know your pressure is higher when cold just taught i would mention it.
@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Philip.. yes you are correct.. the colder the temperatures the higher your pressure would read.. likewise the warmer the temp the lower the pressure would read.. I just assumed that most people would be increasing their pressure in your average temperature ranges which would be 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit.. I did not think someone would be doing this in the colder weather or the dead of winter so I didn’t think to mention it. The temps when I have adjusted my pressure has always been between 65-75 degrees I’d say.. no lower than 60.. I feel as long as your adjusting your pressure between 60-80 degrees with the tractor and hydraulic fluid COLD or Luke warm would give you the most accurate results. Testing your pressure after your machine has been worked hard would generally leave your pressure much higher than you think.. tho I don’t think it’s gonna have as large of an effect as you’d think.. the pressure may vary by 5psi max either way depending on if it’s hot or cold but I have not tested this theory.. next time I do a hydraulic pressure test tho I will be sure to bring this up. 👍🏻

@BiffsEquipment

Hm that’s strange; what do you mean by it starts to shake? Like the whole tractor? It could be shaking because as you dig hard the diffs are locking and un-locking which can def cause this shaking you are talking about.. one way to remedy this is to change your front diff fluid out for a thicker fluid.. I recommend 80w-90 standard gear oil.. this will help to put more power to the ground and it may shake less.. this is what I use in my front dif and I have much better traction now when digging

@@GunninWizard yah that’s odd, sounds like the previous owner wasn’t big on maintince.. sounds like it coulda been a few issues, also if the air filter was clogged and the oil was black I’m willing to bed the fuel filters were clogged and so was the trans filter and strainer.. I’m sure your dealer is gonna take care of you and do a full service and once they do I’m betting your problem goes away cuz clogged fuel filters and air filter will make the engine hesistate and stutter and have loss of power and vibrate under load, also clogged trans filter and Strainer will cause transmission to feel weak.. let’s hope the full service is the cure, these tractors are super tough so I doubt it did any serious damage, I have put mine through hell and I’m amazed I’m not seeing any symptoms yet but I do take good care of it maintenance wise and sometimes that means more than the way you drive it.
