Didn't really want to do this but my rack is leaking bad. I was going to just send in to Rock Auto, Cardone has a rebuild service, but the internet agrees those rebuild services usually don't do a very good job. So just ordered a seal kit, the last spline socket on ebay (hit me up later if you want to borrow it!), and since I'm saving some money not using the rebuild service, went ahead and ordered a Boostrodeo shirt. Thanks for the video!

@@BoostRodeo for sure, i think you could probably turn the shaft to full lock and loosen it up or potentially torque it properly as well. there is another youtuber who rebuilt the rack in his 1988 mk3 and when he re-assembles it he puts electrical tape on the teeth on the ram..upon taking apart the rack on my 89, there is a visible crack on the seal which i do think happened when it was re-assembled. your vid is a ton of help and just a tip for the future if you decide to re-do this video or do another DIY tutorial on smaller components..use a gopro if you have one. the POV angle would help alot

Is there any difference in the parts or process to rebuild a RHD JZA70 rack compared to a USDM MA70? Also, is the rack itself or pump that different between an MA70 and a JZA70? I have an ma70 that the previous owner JZ swapped, and since I first watched your everything you need to know video I’m wondering how compatible the jz pump is with the 7m rack.

@BoostRodeo

Unfortunately it's a pretty specialized part. SnapOn, Match are going to be $$$ as well. Another option is to use the steering intermediate shaft to keep the rack input from turning. Either take it out of the car or hit up a junkyard and grab one out of another toyota that is the same size. I believe it's's pretty common between most of their midsized cars.

Would you say that there is an area where you can adjust the slop in the steering rack? On some cars i've seen you can adjust that large bolt tighter to adjust the slack. Does the supra rack do the same?
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo Жыл бұрын
So the preload on the pinion nut under the large cap is meant to do that. Setting it correctly should set the mesh on the gears to create zero slop unless they are heavily worn. The bearings and teflon guide for the main rod also are things that could cause issues with play if they are really worn.

Were there any burs on the rack piston ends or teeth? It sounds like your oil seals on both sides were damaged. It could also happen if the pump is not regulating pressure correctly and is pushing fluid past the seals. There is a way to rig up a guage and check that. In this video I show how to do it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3jRn3mjZ5mHlcU

Hey there, just saw the whole tutorial of the rack and pinion getting replaced. And I had a few questions. I have a 1994 MK4 Supra and I’m wondering if there rack and pinion, gearbox or steering gear are the same as on the MK3’s? So I’m running to power steering issues as well. I just replaced my power steering pump, I bled the air out made sure there wasn’t anymore of that weird noise the toll it around the block. Right before I even took the first turn my power steering went out again. It worked for like 0.5 miles till my steering felt very hard to turn. As if there isn’t any. Do you think it’s the rack and pinion issue? Or the power steering pump went out again? What ever it is I’m lost and need some help.
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 4 жыл бұрын
The racks are very similar l. First thing I would check is if the reservoir is clean. There is a screen inside that can get a layer of dirt and sludge on it and starves the pump for fluid. Drain the reservoir and look inside with a flashlight. Clean it by flushing with carb cleaner if dirty. Next I would make sure that the progressive power steering solenoid in the rack is plugged in if your car has it. Then check both the resistance of the solenoid and voltage from the pps ecu. The TSRM will have instructions for all this. If all that checks out I would do a system pressure check (also in tsrm or this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3jRn3mjZ5mHlcU ) and vaccum check the rack to see if the seals are good. Hope that helps!
@artemkvas2246
@artemkvas2246 4 жыл бұрын
BoostRodeo I replaced the power steering reservoir to a mishimoto one, so it’s brand new. Also I think my power steering rack is not leaking cuz I don’t see any ATF leaking out from the cvboots. The progressive power steering solenoid is also plugged in, but your saying I could check if it works with a battery to test it?
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 4 жыл бұрын
@@artemkvas2246 that is one option but don't put 12v to it. Use a 9v or 6v battery if you have one and only connect it for a few seconds at a time to see if the steering feel changes. The solenoid only operates on 0-5v so using 12v or even 9v prolonged can burn it out. You can also check the solenoid itself. It should have 6-11 ohms of resistance between the two connector pins. The pps ecu can also be checked with a multimeter. It should put out around a very small amount of voltage when not moving and above 37mph should drop off to almost nothing.
@artemkvas2246
@artemkvas2246 4 жыл бұрын
BoostRodeo Ok I’m starting to understand this a little more, but have a few more questions. What is the 6-11 ohms of resistance? What do you mean by “ohms”? between the two connector pins. And also where is the pps ecu located for me to test the voltage on it when the car is running at idle.
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 4 жыл бұрын
@@artemkvas2246 do you have a multimeter? Ohms is a measure of resistance. The two wires coming off the solenoid on the rack should measure somewhere in between 6 and 11 when y tested with a multimeter. That will tell you that the solenoid has not shorted out or the windings shot. This link should help, there is a whole section on the steering system and troubleshooting. www.shoarmateam.nl/content/mkiv-supra-tsrm/

What sensors/input does the PPS rack need to run? I've got a '91 turbo so I assume I've got it. Speedometer doesn't work so I doubt PPS has the necessary input to run.
@BoostRodeo
@BoostRodeo 5 жыл бұрын
The PPS ecu does use a speed input but it gets it from the rear abs sensors so it should still work even if your speedo doesn't. Does the powersteering feel fairly light at low speeds but stiffer at 60-70+ mph?
@traingeek2000
