I used the upper flange from the original rag joint with Borgesons lower flange and rubber disc. I didn`t like the way the Borgeson rag joint fit on the steering column but the original part fit great. So mixing and matching the parts ended up being the best solution for me. The holes for the screws on the original rag joint are a little bit smaller so those had to be drilled out, but other than that the parts fit together well. I also had to file a new groove for the pinch bolt on the end of the steering column since the Borgeson steering box doesn`t line up with the steering column if both of them are centered. Keeping the steering box centered is very important for the steering feel and also to prevent wear on the steering box. But the steering column will only cancel the indicators at the wrong position if the steering column isn`t centered. It is possible to center both of them but you will have to mount the rag joint out of center. I did the install with the steering column mounted in the car. The steering column collapsed easily and I just tapped it in a little bit at a time until everything lined up. I have seen other cars where the rubber disc is being compressed or pulled apart because the column is too short or too long. I`m afraid that would shorten the life span of the rubber disc so I took care to keep it as even as possible.

@@janthom91 Great info. Thanks for sharing. There’s more than one way to get the job done. Some of the older parts are better made than the new stuff for sure.

Is it easier to drill and tap a new hole to the original flat spot instead of marking and filing a new flat spot? I don’t know how hard the spline is to file. Seems the spline would be hardened material. It worked though, continue on! It’s nice to see the progress on a long road. What are you going to do with all this spare time coming in the near future?

@@Rodeo32145 Splines were not too hard to file - 3 minutes with a small file. Hope to be DRIVING soon. Picked up a SBC400 to keep me busy! That’s the final engine - for when the current one dies.

How hard was it to shorten the steering column?
@thedrivewayC32 ай бұрын
@@primozkrajcar4144 Not hard at all. They are made to collapse with some pressure. Just make sure you support the top end of the column (where the nut goes into the shaft) and tap the bottom in with a dead blow hammer or something similar. If you go too far, it’s possible to pull it back out, but not as easy due to the design. Good luck!
