I believe we get to choose what our wardrobe neutrals are. For a while, mine was dusty pink, and most of the things in my wardrobe looked really good with it.
@sashadonovan-anns9528 Жыл бұрын
Omg 100%! Dusty pink, navy, and forest green have consistently been my neutrals 🥰 Because these colours suit me my printed clothes usually contain these colours so my wardrobe stays cohesive and I rarely have to reach for a brown/black/white piece to make the outfit work. But they also add a bit of colour and life to say, jeans, or gingham trousers etc. I've always related to them as neutrals rather than statement colours, and I think they used to be described like that until Wardrobe Minimalist Beige took the spotlight in clothing commentary! Then I noticed neutral colours seemed to shrink to only include black, grey, white, brown... and sometimes navy. But no longer khaki, forest greens, and blush pinks. It's funny how these things can shift!

I actually buy FAR less clothing than I did 15 years ago. I know what I love and I mend it when I need to rather than replace it. I also have so much of myself "invested" in my clothes now because I made much of my wardrobe myself. Even if you can't sew things from scratch, learning to mend things is such a great skill to have.

I feel as though neutrals and colour basics are all relative. For instance, I would consider 'merlot' to be a neutral in my wardrobe because I own so much of it and it goes with pretty much every other colour I wear on the regular. Namely, forest green, brown and navy blue. You could absolutely have a wardrobe based around the 'Barbie pink' so long as the other pieces in there coordinated (or clashed) with it in a way you like.
@Canny-Octopus2 күн бұрын
Yes! 15ish years ago, Miss Minimalist wrote that her goal is to be able to dress in the dark and still look decent. She was ruthless about only having clothes in certain colors, that all could harmonize together. It took awhile to get there, but it makes dressing so easy, while looking so put-together.

Random tangent but have you ever considered making yourself a nice apron? I feel like it could not only protect your clothes but as a crafty human possibly be perfect for helping you keep a pen, knitting needles, a snack etc on you while you’re wandering around doing your thing? Could even put a lil book pouch in if you wanted to? Awesome vid as always ❤

There's another way in my opinion - I have settled on mostly dark and muted colour tones, i.e. dark green, burgundy red, navy, deep purple, alongside some black and charcoal grey - they tend to go well together, but they aren't all neutrals and they suit my complexion as a feminine style soft autumn

The (actually trained, talented) colour analysis people are ALWAYS right. Having a proper in-person analysis with a skilled analyst is one of the single best wardrobe investments anyone who wears clothes and cares about how they present to the world can make. You look SO much better in your best colours vs your worst and even your just okay ones, it's wild. It also makes dressing and curating a closet SO much easier, and the knowledge lasts a lifetime - your season does not change with age. It's the ultimate hack to finding investment pieces that you will actually love and wear on repeat because we feel good in our own colours because it's naturally harmonious and also it just makes us look our best and we like that feeling. That's also why people often naturally gravitate to wearing their correct colours, or maybe have always been drawn to them but didn't quite have the confidence to wear them consistently. Most people end up really loving their palettes. People who freak out (after being told black doesn't actually suit them, for example) are responding to losing old patterns that feel familiar or comfortable, and/or cultural messaging ("black is elegant/timeless/chic on everyone", etc.) Once they settle in to their palette with pieces they love those feelings almost always resolve. Can't recommend it enough!

Love that idea of challenging what a "neutral" is. Makes me realize I tend to buy a tons of solid blues and greens because I love them, they bring me joy, and I love wearing different shades altogether. So that's kind of become my "neutral" tone for staple clothes. How fun!

I too am a colour addict, and because I don’t own or wear many neutrals, I’ve decided that for me yellow is a neutral because all my yellow clothes go with everything else I own so well that it might as well be :)
@Smidgeon-pigeon Жыл бұрын
Honestly same. There is a particular shade of maroon that seems to go with everything in my preferred color palette and so I own so much maroon.
@Canny-Octopus2 күн бұрын
Exactly! Yellow is a wonderful neutral! I'm ruthless about shades, so I don't allow yellows with even a hint of mustard - lemon yellows only! Not only does it match my coloring and make me glow, it makes me joyful, but it all then matches! Discipline on what colors come into my wardrobe pays off hugely with laziness when dressing (that looks far from lazy).

I'm a neutral/beige girlie through and through, the main reason for which is that my "boring" wardrobe can be kept small, very easy to mix and match, and nobody can even tell that I'm an outfit repeater, because all pieces are kinda the same four shades 😅But figuring out I didn't like bright colors on myself did mean I went though a phase of wearing too much black, which made me feel like a sad blob. As you said, the fact that it goes with everything doesn't mean that it matches your spirit! I still re-watch all your closet-related videos from time to time, because I just ADORE your taste in colorful clothing and mixing patterns. It cheers me up so much 🌈
@Olc2906 Жыл бұрын
I had this black phase too! Still enjoy it sometimes. But I realised I LOVE a beautiful base (black, greys, white) accented with pops of bright colour. This made SO much sense as that’s the interior style and art I’ve always loved. I started adding in bags, lipstick, nail varnish, hair accessories, and shoes with pops of colour to make the black less deathly. It’s so true that colour genuinely cheers us up. Hope this helps someone having the same issue and wanting to bring some colour into their lives!!!
I loved this video, I recently did the opposite and challenged myself to not wear black for 10 days. At the end of it I immediately put on all black and instantly felt right at home.

I would accept this challenge though, not sure when, but I will try for a week to wear nothing black just colourful "cheerful" clothes, including dresses and skirts which I also have tons and never wear because I don't feel comfortable wearing them anymore.

I used to be like this. I only wore black, and had to venture into color ludicrously slowly. I started by wearing a black tank over a colorful tank, under a black blazer, with black trousers - so only a tiny border of shirt color was visible! Eventually I felt comfortable wearing a whole blouse with color. Now I basically only wear bright colors. But it was a long slow transition!

so tru about the so-called 'staple pieces' bc i got a pair of black jeans thinking I'd wear them all the time (have worn them once) but then i bought three pairs of corduroy wide leg trousers in blue, red, and teal, thinking theyd be for special occasions/for dressing up a casual shirt... and i have worn them each probably 25 times at least this year and even when it was a heatwave i still chose them, like?!? who'd have thought! and i realize this happens with a lot of my wardrobe because when i try to wear plain/less crazy pieces i suddenly feel like a fraud, like im trying to look more elegant or put together than i actually am.. even with shirts this happens!! white shirt? nah. white shirt with cowboys printed all over it? always in the weekly wash. always!! the classic staples are not staples if you never actually wear them 😅

I am going through the opposite journey recently, I used to love black for it's mysterious quality (my colour type is light spring so black definitely looks mysterious on me rather than chic) but I got so comfortable in it that I began relying on it for everything. After recenty starting college as a mature student I foind myself wearing black nearly everyday because it was so easy to put outfits together but I got booooored so fast by my outfits and even a bit depressed looking at them. I think I used to play a lot with pattern and silhouette during my early black days so the outfits never felt boring, but during college I was looking for comfort and so my outfits became a lot more simple in the silhouette department. So now I'm looking to bring some colour into my life. I found I really didn't like any of the colours in my wardrobe anymore as they were all iridescent purples, pinks and blues that again look great with black but on their own read as kind of play-it-safe colours. BUT I don't look great in most brights (except true red, magenta, violet and blue leaning teals) and I don't think block colours suit my body type too well, they need to be broken up by patterns. But most of the colourful clothes in the affordable shops where I'm living are in bright, block colours and thrifting is not very easy here either 😅 so yeah it's been a learning curve and it almost feels self indulgent in a wrongful way to be spending so much time thinking about something pretty superficial, I can see why I landed on black and iridescents all those years ago but at the same time, there's joy in rediscovering different sides of myself through my clothing and so I'm trying to just enjoy the process. Anyway it was really interesting to see someone do the other side of the same coin 😊

I used to be so wasteful because I’d buy “classic” black pieces and then never wear them because of how much they washed me out. Knowing my color season has helped me stop wasting so much money but I still fall into the “neutrals” trap. They aren’t *my* neutrals!

I actually did the exact opposite of this earlier in the year. For most of my life, the majority of my clothing has been black, and that majority has only increased over the past several years. So I went to stores and tried on some colors. Then I went to the thrift store and bought a few pieces in the colors I thought would work best with black. I mostly hated it…🫠 I took it seriously and gave each piece/color many chances, but for the most part it simply wasn’t me. Like you said, it didn’t match my soul. However, I did find a couple dark colors I like wearing as a solid if the garment is right (it’s an “I know it when I see it” sort of thing). I also came away from the experiment with a renewed love for embellishments, texture, metallics (particularly silver and pewter), and patterns that incorporate small hints of color on a black background. And I realized I wasn’t wearing much of my jewelry, so I sold neglected pieces and started wearing my favorites more frequently! So my experience also turned out to be valuable in unexpected ways 😊👍👍

I'm kind of atypical and I'm liking it. I wear a lot of black so I wind up not buying things because I already own something very similar to whatever the new style is. I'm fussy about fabrics and cuts because there's no colour or pattern to detract from them. I have clothing items that I've had for 20 years that I got given second hand from family. I wear things until the stitches fall apart, then stitch them back together until the fabric fails. I don't have a seasonal wardrobe because my vest tops go under my work shirts in winter and my leggings go on under my skirts. I'm not scared to be seen in the same outfit over and over. Even my wedding dress was designed to be worn more than once.

What a fun experiment! A lot of my closet is black and the last 2 years I've been swapping to mostly black when the seasons change since the colors and patterns I'm drawn to in spring/summer vs. fall/winter don't actually work well together. It's funny though, since when I do color, I do ALL THE COLOR AND PATTERNS together and I've slowly been expanding out so that I can make that work with a colorful set of accessories. Also, I looove how that b&w dress turned out! So cute! If you're thinking about doing all black again and want to skip the makeup, it might be worth finding a good little scarf/bandana you can tie around your neck with colors that work for you. Just that can be enough to help you not look washed out. (Ngl tho, you in all black feels almost commercial, I kinda felt like you were gonna sell me a self help book or something at the end there.)

It doesn't take a professional to style jeans, the real challenge is when you remove the staple piece - so that's what I tried to do. It definitely made me use my wardrobe in more creative ways, like wearing a pencil skirt over a dress to make it into a "blouse". Making use of what I had helped me appreciate and enjoy my wardrobe much more.

I don't know what it is (because I have always loved your videos, hearing your views on any kind of topic!) but your recent videos honestly fill me with a joy and appreciation for your content on a whole new level, haha.

Very interesting I had essentially done the same experiment in reverse. I went head on avoiding black for ages (donated some and kept others but didn't wear). But then I had the conundrum of not having many basics so it was a pattern circus. Trying to find other neutrals second hand that I like and afford wasn't really happening. So in my recent capsule I've decided to reembrace black and it's not as bad as I thought it was becoming. But it was good to practice without it.

I think it’s just as important to know what you don’t like alongside what you like. My soul matches the blacks + grays + the occasional pop of color for contrast that I wear lol. But it took me trying to go out of my comfort zone, wearing bolder bright colors and things with no black to learn that.

I think you are stylish in any color or neutral. It is really easy to default into a wardrobe comfort zone which is also a rut if you stay long enough.

if youre dressing with colour in mind it’s also good to keep the undertone in mind the same way some lipsticks just don’t work on ur skin even though they’re all red, pink or neutral every colour on the spectrum has a different balance of primary

My neutrals are great and black (in this season of life, though I still like a good brown) and all my bottoms are these colors. Then my tops and dresses are blues, greens, and burgundys to satisfy my need for color. My shoes and outer layers are pretty evenly split between neutrals and color. It makes putting together outfits super easy and it's totally my style.

You're such an inspiration! Your last video motivated me to turn a dress I bought a year ago (and wore only once!) Into a skirt. It was daunting to start but actually really fun once I started! I got to add pockets!! I'm hoping to get a lot more use out of it this season coming! Thank you for your videos, they're so wonderful!

I really love your videos on sustainable fashion and have been trying to be much more mindful and sustainable in what I buy. I am also a girlie that spills things (mainly food) and really want to get better at taking care of my clothes (yellow armpit stains I'm looking at you) so they last longer. Any tips from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

I've been at both extremes, wearing only black and grey, and then wearing almost exclusively print and colour. But I came to realise I was buying the colourful clothing for all the wrong reasons. But I did learn valuable lessons from my Colourful Era. Now I skirt around the edges of all black without often being *fully* all black. I like DARK or subtle prints. I mix textures, and look for unexpected details. I pay more attention to the cut and silhouette. I've banned navy, and found I love forest green, and I actually love combining black and brown (blasphemy!). I bring in pops of colour with my shoes, bags, statement earrings, enamel pins. I feel much more myself, living in a world of an eclectic wardrobe but with the saturation and brightness turned down 90%

I love how you find new ways to experiment with your wardrobe without needing new clothes ❤ and how altering and fixing your clothes is just a normal thing that you do, so inspiring!

Neutrals definitely clash with my soul too, I’m another bright person. I also love your Lucy & Yak collection. I think the only things I like which are neutral tend to be very bold and patterned but I’ve stopped buying neutrals because I prefer colour with colour anyway. As I’m plus sized I do think it’s tricky to find brightly coloured basics though.

As someone who didn't wear a lot of color for most of their life (I was very much, jeans and a graphic, sometimes those were in colors other than black) I really love color now. I used to joke that black was my color and my favorite, it's really not. Purple is. And I embrace that now. I do still have a lot of graphic tees that are black based, but i also have rainbow skirts and patterns to mix it up with now. I totally get the, whole feeling more chic and elegant in all black and neutrals, but much like yourself, I find myself missing color when I dress in more neutrals. I just can't do it anymore! :)

I dress mostly in a mix of not black &white neutrals or softer color color ( which i feel so little people do? The internet is all boring neutrals versus neon dopamine dressing), such as khaki with muted seagreen, beige and blush, rose and eggplant...

I'm turning 23 and I've been feeling a little lost about my wardrobe, I'm going to have to take a good look at it and try and figure out. Which means I'll probably be watching a lot of your videos about clothing

I am continually inspired by your clothing experiments! You mentioned feeling more chic, it would be interesting to unpack "chic" - could it just be that colour blocking in a more "fun" colour could give you that feeling of chic?

I have a max of three black items in my wardrobe, all summer clothing. And very few white and beige item for the the same reason as you - I'm a spiller. I thibk my default colour is warm grey and (light) blye. But I have realised that I really like wearing black recently, so I'll try to expand on it, even though it looks boring.

there's a Canadian youtuber called WithWendy and she does a lot of sewing content. I feel like her content and your content would really vibe. she's a bit more high fashion but i think that with your love of color and her knowledge of fabrics and design you two could make some awesome clothes. I know not all youtubers know each other, but i just thought i would make you aware of her in case you didn't know.

Hahaha you're so like me! I get so sad wearing black or grey. I also filter for certain colours (pink, blue, purple and red for me) when shopping second hand too!

I'm currently going through my work wardrobe and trying to take it from smart casual to buisness casual... as I get ready for a new job. It's kind of exciting. But I need to thrift better pants.

In a similar idea, I’ve been wanting a style bundle for a while but felt like I don’t actually NEED one. So instead, I curated one from my own closet for going on holiday and loved it! It also made dressing on holiday so easy cuz everything fit together but also looked really cute!

This was a great video, thanks Leena! As someone who has been largely dressed in black (metal for life)🤘, I have started adding more colours over the past few years and am loving it. It started about the same time as I stopped using haircolour... 🤔 Btw I am 40 and still feel I am playing dress up when wearing more "grownup" things 😂
