Personally my 2021 trek rail is pretty much spot on. Definitely don’t need more power but what I think company’s need to concentrate on is lightness. The new trek fuel is heading in the right direction but if it had the 85nm and new 720 smart Bosch battery whilst still being around 18/19kg now that would be the ultimate bike. I know where a long way off that yet but until then my trusty rail will be staying

this overrun and instant power make a lot of sense on bike, for who search always tricky way uphill. The fact that you can use the power without a complete cranck rotation is the cherry on the cake once you learn to use it: no more pedal strokes on big rocky obstacles!!! Really really interesting!!!!! As usual, great video from you Rob, clear and complete explanations. Ciao!!

The thing that stuck out to me the most is the built in overrun. I have a gen 3 levo in the shop getting a new motor right now because it started having this happen with about 700 miles on the motor. Basically when I stop pedaling the motor continues to pull for a second or 2. On my Levo it's intermittent so I have to always be ready in case it happens and it almost caused a couple of wrecks. While I see the benefits that you laid out, from my experience it's pretty dangerous.
@lozetchells9164

I can see the overrun being useful for clearing obstacles without pedal strikes etc, but I can also see it being a recipe for doing a faceplant into a hedge. The Brose on the Spesh does overrun too, but to a lesser extent from what it sounds. I'd be interested to hear if it's any quieter than the last gen, though. The CX is a noisy motor.

Prob like most performance parts, it has a shorter life. Anyone who races anything understands that the race bits are more prone to break due to the nature of use, so that's prob why it's sold under a race moniker.

Thanks for actually explaining what it is unlike one of the other channels. It sounds like it would be no use to me at all on my trek city bike as my riding is all about smooth flat bike paths and stretching the battery out to over 5 hours. As I often run in eco i for one don’t need this on the bike path.

This "extended boost/overrun/whatever" has been an option on Specialized since day 1 on the Gen2 motors. You stop pedaling, motor keeps pulling for a bit more (this is tuned via acceleration response I believe, and is also more present in Turbo mode than in others). Also, the 400% assist with minimal rider input is basically Shuttle mode on Specialized. So, presenting all of this as something "revolutionary" just means you haven't been paying attention for a few years?

Just a question Rob, Bosch has solved the performance problems of the performance gen 4 (noises, looseness, system shutdown), because regardless of being a very good engine it is also true that it gives many problems. It should be more robust and watertight since it is designed for competition. The bicycle environment is the only one that does not apply improvements from competition to the amateur sector with the passage of time, only more maintenance costs and less durability.
@lukewalker1051

You kind of get it. Oh, don't ask tangible questions which will never be answered. Rob is Bosche's spokesmodel champion. Only a sucker would buy a mountain bike with a Bosch, Brose or Yamaha driveline with CANBUS controller and proprietary battery. Proprietary e-bikes are a mfr money grab. Have to buy their replacement parts and 100% mark up. Batteries are small and suck because they have a 'smart chip' so you can't repair them by replacing bad cells. Don't conflate the term Race with having additional design robustness. It doesn't. This is pure marketing.

Noise and frequency is what it’s all about as far as I am concerned. If it still sings uphill and rattle’s “badly” downhill I ain’t investing in any motor. TQ seems to be the only one that associates MTB noiseless in the wild is what escapism is all about.
@lukewalker1051
@lukewalker1051 2 жыл бұрын
You get it....but way more than noise and rattles. These drivelines are a proprietary money grab by Bosch that won't run on generic Li-Ion battery power comprised of superior 18650 or 21700 cells. Noise and rattles aka NVH are only the tip of the Bosch iceberg. Reliability and part replacement cost is the gotcha.

At what point is 'extended overrun' no longer considered 'pedal assisted'? These are things that are just going to give regular trail users more fuel for their arguments against emtbing. Also, in my opinion the EWS-E has to start regulating these things as there has to be a level playing field and extended overrun is right on the edge of non-pedal assisted power.

Seems like this Race version is just an effort to match the Brose 2.2 in the Specialized models? Brose already had 410% assist and the acceleration adjustment in the Mission Control app allows the rider to tune how quickly the assist steps in (0% being the standard smooth setting and 100% being very quick jumpy response to pedal inputs). Am I correct Rob?

The Bosch feels more powerful than the Brose to me. And more importantly, has instant motor engagement, with extremely sensitive sensors on the cranks. @@RobRidesEMTB SyncDrive Pro has been known for quick power delivery and motor overrun from the beginning. It already supported 360% assist level (with 5 levels) and 80nm torque over 4 years ago. In the last two years they bumped up the max assist level to 400% and 85nm torque. The 5 levels of assistance is unique in the industry, Only recently Specialized introduced 10 step micro adjustments although what it does is not documented well. The automation modes in Bosh and other motors will never perform as good as manual controls. So yes Bosh is getting closer to SyncDrive however it still does not support 5 levels of support. It's a motor that makes me question my tolerance towards eMTB. Where does it stop to be mountainbiking anymore and it's more of an E trial motorcycle? This still enables you to ride until you're tired but at certain situations it makes it really blurry to be almost something of an motorcycle. It feels too much. I always enjoyed the way the BOSCH system felt, as it never really had a brutal nature but very powerful and very organically assisting. This sounds like a throttle actuated system where your cranks are the throttle. Good video tho. Nicely made and explained.

It's still nothing like a motorcycle. When you watch enduro Motorcross and enduro emtb they are worlds apart. Giving me full motor power when I just slightly push to pedals in rough terrain would result in easy crash for me or not enjoing the ride at all. This motor may be better sensitive then my old Brose but still...

What a brilliant idea... "Guys, R&D is lazy, how can we get more sales on our old motor wihout doing anything?" - Put a new 2$ sticker with "RACE" on it. - Push dumbly the cursors to the max in our locked software. - Get rid of the black paint. Yeah, the plumber pipe gray color is so trendy. - Make it a limited edition bullshit We have a Banger ! Silent motor ? Open software ? No rattle noise when descending ? Nobody cares about that ! Its a limited edition ! Sht up and take my money !

So they've upgraded this thing by making it perform like a cheap hub motor controller 😂 Personally I hate it and rather have the motor match my movements. Or better yet cut that software out and control with a throttle to match my physical input precisely how I need it.

It looks like Bosh removed all the "boring safety features" from its previous motor, and they are calling it Race 😁

If it’s software could this technically be made backwards compatible? However unlikely that is.

For sure. I heard that some race teams were actually using the software in the existing motors for racing.

Anyone who believes that the race motor is not increasing the output is dreaming. We can just be thankful that the vagary of the law (how the average power output is calculated) allows the manufacturers to push the limits.

If it's all about the software making the difference then there's no reason Bosch couldn't do this "Race" mode with all their other motors but obviously cash is king and companies as big as Bosch will always try to steal every penny they can.

So it's a software tune (on a closed system) and a questionable cover redesign. Why can't existing unit have the same software tune for free (unbias opinion ep8 here) with out voiding the warranty? It just feels like a double standard in happening in the emtb motor world where they have placed software tweaks behind a paywall or voided warranties. Its very cynical offering 'new' motors which are nothing more than software tweaks which in the past they have claimed would damage the motor. Why isn't Rob more scornful of this? IMO this is a bad look for eMTB manufacturers, far more brand loyalty/goodwill would be generated if they supported their existing motors by pushing these as free updates too all applicable users.

@@RobRidesEMTB Hey sorry Rob. I know you have freedom to express your opinions with no influence from brands. I in no way wished to see your integrity questioned. You helped me in eMTB and I really have a deep appreciation for that. The 'New' motor is interesting in how much they can change the profile of a eMTB with software settings. I just felt the killer questions (that popped into my cynical grumpy mind) weren't asked, yet I understand this a review so maybe that wasn't the time to address wider subject.
