@Rockin' Dave Byron I am very impressed with the feel of the GX100, and it is a pedal unit instead of the rack unit. I just show up, plug in and play. The presets are regrettably bad. So Don't get discouraged. You can watch a few KZbin videos to help dial in a great tone if you are new to modelers.

Exactly my opinion - easy to use and little faffing about. The CORE has its place (I still have mine) but for easy simple general playing the GX-100 is really a winner. Yes I anticipated you can do it form the pedal but (the truth) ha I was too idle to spend long looking for it... :) it's easy on the software of course. Overall a very welcome pedal and one that really did offer things that the others were sometimes cumbersome at doing.... thanks for your opinion too - and for watching.

Nice review Tony. Seems like a great product in this price range and built like Boss always does. Yes, super SMD miniature components, but that is the standard these days. Not going anywhere near it with my Weller iron. Great functionality on the switches and I like being able to change the input sensitivity for when you switch guitars. I am used to creating banks that work with each instrument. I like the touchscreen functionality better than the Headrush Gigboard that I tried and sent back. If I wasn't already knee deep in FAS products I'd give this one a go. Many years ago I had a Boss GT-5 that served me well. Glad Boss is keeping w/ the times.

Good review . Thank you. I’ve had the Ampero one for a few years and the one thing I like about it is that it has balanced output. The other thing I don’t is the it doesn’t have an effects loop so you can’t do the 4 cable method . I am interested in if this unit can get good pushed clean sounds without spending two weeks trying to dial it in.

This one DOES have an effects loop and you can 4CM this unit from what I see. No balanced outputs though. In my short experience (yes I really did video as I plugged it in) so far I think you would not spend forever trying to get the sounds and its a very easy unit to use. A great in-depth review, Tony, and I've seen a couple from your channel from time to time! But I have a question - as I recently saw your in-depth review of the Mooer GE300, I was wondering... Which unit is the better one, side to side: the Mooer GE300 or the Boss GX-100? Or am I going about this all wrong, and the units are meant for completely different consumer types?
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Better? A difficult one - simply because better means different things to different people. For example, for me, I liked the ease of use of the GX-100 whereas some functions of the MOOER GE300 were a little strange, as was the 'two apps' which should have been one for the GE300. Then there is the tones... well, again that becomes a personal choice. Really you have to try them both side by side if you can re tones and also the 'feel' becomes important on simulated amps. Both devices are aimed IMO towards not pro users so are competing in the same exact market. There are many more to consider and of recent times I have reviewed many of them... some good, some less so. Hope it helps a bit.

hello sir, greetings from Indonesia, I have a question, which one do you think sounds better, valeton gp 200 or boss gx 100?
@tonymckenzieofficial Жыл бұрын
That's a great question... but sound is subjective really. What I would say, is that if you can that you try both units yourself. Don't listen to others telling you this or that. And when you try them play YOUR style on them, because I have found that some units are great at clean tones but lack in heavier tones. And some are the opposite. The one thing I could say, is that Boss have custom chips inside that unit, and it is highly likely (although I have not examined one) that the Valeton has off the shelf components etc. Of course the software is also important on these types of units as is the operational functions so do consider the 'ease of use' also which really does matter. I hope these comments help a bit and thanks for watching.

@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Well I guess which mixer? Mine has regular 6.3mm connectors and XLR (those combo ones) so I just plug in. An alternative if you have a desk that works digital and can receive/send streaming audio is to connect via USB. It all works and while it's not XLR seems fine to me. You could of course also mic an amp and turn off the simulators in the pedal, but that can sort of defeat the object I guess :) Thanks for watching.

Hello Tony, silly question here from a 53 year old guy that is looking for SIMPLE and EASY to program multi effects unit. I seem to understand that a good IR will simplify a lot of basic sound setting work. Can I presume that with a good IR pedal (T.C. Electronic's Impulse loader as an example) I could combine it with a good old Boss ME-80 and obtain a similar quality sound as I would with a GX-100, without the complexity and the endless options. Is that a fair assessment, or am I stuck in the ice age ? I've had my eye on the HR MX5 but the more I read on it, the more it seems to offer too many possibilities and I fear I will just get discouraged spending too much time programming PS: My unit is intended for live performance only and I am not planning on playing through an amp, but rather straight into a PA thanks very much in advance Tony!
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Well, any IR device (there are many inc the one you mention - I have one of the BluGuitar ones that has built in IR stuff) can effectively change thew sound that you hear if used as it should be. And you're right the IR and its settings does change the tone you hear of that there is no doubt. But... think about thew question... assume the Boss ME-80 tone is fed to one of those devices, then the sound coming out will be the ME-80 and 'changed' because of the IR device. But it won't change the underlying tone fed in to the IR device... what you hear would be the ME-80 plus a speaker sim.... if you get me. In other words, it won't make the ME-80 (and this is just a silly example) Marshall amp sound like a Marshall amp sim from say a Lie6 Helix. Of course the speaker influences the underlying tone, but it would not make that underlying tone anything other than how it would sound through a speaker - I hope I got that said right. Some guys might disagree... but that's how I understand it. The MX5 has speaker emulation in it. I know EXACTLY what you mean about the complexity of the simulators - and while some are 'OK', others are like piloting a 'blackbird' :) So the IR device and ME-80 might be fine for you... my guess is that it could work - and you raised a good point and one I have not been asked before... and thanks for watching. Hope it helps.

Seemed alright at the time, but the last track my mind was really elsewhere so I could have been much better with heavy stuff... but it lost it early on I guess. In any case I thought in the room that it all sounded OK on the effects and the tones.. thanks for watching.

Nice but I’ll stick with my GT100. To be totally honest I prefer my Eventide H9’s. Another great gear review my friend❤️🔥🕊

Ah the GT-100 I remember that so well... it was so good when it came out too - I commented about it in this video. The two screens were a boon. I like the Eventide stuff, H9 - but I wish they would have released that unit with more controls etc. on the unit and made it simpler rather than for mainly on pedal board. I have had a few of the H9's but I always stumble on the controls. Having said that - incredible effects from one of the best out there. Thanks for watching.

The Reasons I prefer Boss over Fractal and Lime 6 is that if I want to start all over I just perform a factory Reset .On Fractal I have to use Fractal Bot and redownload Patches from another source and hope that Fractal still supports the product which on some of their products they no longer support.
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Good points. And theres more... on some devices if you 'cock up' the original as shipped and did not do a backup then sadly I have found some sims have great difficulty in resetting to factory... not just re the hardware. Great point you mention and one that is not mentioned often... aggro of resetting at a gig could be extremely painful with some devices, but I guess all those followers of each brand have their 2k backup waiting in the wings... not! :) Thanks for watching.

Does the GX 100 sound very different from the GT 1000 ? Asking because you were not too impressed with the latter!! To me the most important thing about any review is how it sounds.
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Well I do think everything about a device is important, but obviously the sound is at the top of the list (at least until it breaks!). IMO the GX-100 is different than the GT1000. I reviewed the GT1000 when it first came out and I have to say it was not a good device for tone... there was no doubt about that. The GT-1000 series has more recently improved though and if you watch my review of the GT1000CORE you will see reasonably good tones IMO. In fact I still own a GT1000CORE.... while we all have our priorities re gear, it's far from 'just the tone' that matters though and any failed bit of gear you ever owned 'outside the warranty' will confirm that when you have to pay for a repair or buy a new one because they 'can't repair it' type of thing. Hope it helps and thanks for watching.
@vg992 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your insights, in the GT 1000 they introduced mastering FX in firmware 3.20 , and I read somewhere that this particular effect is not there in the GX 100 ( maybe they incorporated it into the overall sound of the GX 100) . Although I am a hardcore Boss fan ( have the VG 99 , GP 10 , GT 100 etc ) I wasn’t too thrilled with the sounds of the early firmware of the GT 1000. However will appreciate if you could do a comparison between the two units with both sporting the latest hardware as I am about to pull the trigger on a GX 100

Thanks for another great review Tony, it is so close to making me buy one, but at the moment £499 is too much to spend on what for me would be an expensive toy. I only play at home, and only want clean tones with a bit of tape echo for the music that i play. Perhaps the new Ampero or Nu-X will be better for my requirements.🙂
@harryanderson72822 жыл бұрын
There are plenty of free amp/cab sims and IR loaders out there atm too. ;)
@Stoffendous2 жыл бұрын
New Ampero is hardly any cheaper, and you'd be without an expression pedal. If you want that, and as many switchesvas the Boss, it would actually be more expensive.
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
@Harry Anderson Trouble is Harry, there is a load of not so good ones too... honestly you could spend a very long time trying to work through them all. But good point if you can find the good ones.
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Oh I know - trust me on that. In the sectors I'm currently in there are massive problems with 'chips' shipping and even a lock down in China... it all makes for a very volatile time in business and that makes me feel like being very careful presently. The Ampero stomp II I reviewed and you might have seen it. But I have yet to look at the Nu-X unit. Yes from what you say the GX-100 might offer more than you need anyway.. what I liked was the ease of use really. Thanks...

Oh I know - I was very surprised about that - and the laptop I used is no slouch (i7). But did you notice how fast the live sets loaded from tone studio? almost instant. I literally only had this unit as I recorded things and not long enough to explore every facet, but you're right in reality it did sound good - even with the standard included IR's. @tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
I did check the tuning on the first track in particular as I used three different guitars and three presets... with one external IR. On the last track it did sound 'off' a bit to me too. Certainly not my best playing as it was generally just a jam so to speak. The tones went direct in to the desk without ANY other device whatsoever. Maybe I'll revisit it on a different video. Exactly right. That's one thing I can absolutely agree on... and at the level that's inside these things these days did you notice how small those components really were... out with the soldering iron and in with the hot air and microscope as Alex below commented. Thanks for watching.
@Kothas012 жыл бұрын
At that price point with so little refinement other than a touchscreen? So little in customizable sound opportunities compared to many others (line6) I'd give it a 6. Its gonna be trash heaped within the next 2 years. Don't get me wrong I love boss but they dropped the ball on this and didn't give it what it really needs........
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
I get your point for sure... but Boss themselves have in some ways shot themselves in the foot so to speak. This is sold at a reasonable price (below the GT-1000CORE) and certainly has less features than some on the GT-1000CORE device. Its a market that is getting so crowded these days and the 'next' pedal always romises more for less etc. Personally I related this pedal as being an 'update' on the GT-100 in many ways... a bit more of an 'every day' workhorse particularly useful for the live stuff although I guess it could do the other stuff. The low KHz was a little surprising... but not entirely unexpected for this price sector. Great comment and thanks for watching too.

Loved it, great in-depth evaluation. But not the Boomer audio. The refraction off the walls make the audio very difficult to tolerate and the sibilance was harsh. Maybe invest in a lapel mic?

Indeed I DO have a lapel mic. This audio did have a problem (I set the mic wrong by accident) and if you watch (for example) the SG review (last one made) its substantially different. My apologies for the audio but I could not go back to do it all again - I spend far too long making and then editing. In any case thanks for watching - appreciated.
