Nhl toronto maple leafs vs ottawa senators was actually a great game, but the morgan rielly ridly greig empty net slapshot goal took all the headlines in the most recent nhl battle of ontario . Too bad we don't get another maple leafs vs senators game this season . Morgan rielly will have an in-person hearing today so we'll see how many games he gets. Sorry, but Greig should NOT expect to be cross-checked in the head by a hothead in Morgan Rielly. And here's the thing. It was a slapshot into an empty net. That doesn't break any code. It's just baloney that's completely made up. It was a way of signifying the fact that the Senators had completed a great season for themselves specifically for asserting bragging rights over the Leafs. There's nothing wrong with that. But Rielly couldn't handle that, and stupidly overreacted. Perhaps if he gave Greig a talking to or a little push, that'd be more accepted. But what he did was completely over the line.

If David Perron gets a suspension for a cross check to the head when defending a teammate (which he deserved, by the way), then Rielly absolutely deserves a suspension for a cross check to the head because he didn't like how an opponent scored a goal.

Sens fan here - this is the right way to view this all. Rielly should have roughed him up and at most, drop the gloves. Greig knew exactly what he was doing but disrespecting a team by not abiding to an "unwritten code" does not warrant taking a cross check to the head. Rielly took the bait and Greig got the last laugh. Plus he'll still challenge Rielly to a real fight when they play next year.

I think it’s because in most cases EN’s are scored from a distance, just like a clear attempt, but with the purpose of putting it on net. Other times they’re scored by actually taking the puck up into the offensive zone to legitimize the chance of scoring on the play, but none of those show this sort of “fuck you” way of capitalizing on it. Personally, I would care less if I were on the Leafs in this moment, but it’s understandable on why it does warrant that response. Greig could have just did a weak wrister, or slid it in, but when someone goes out of their way to slap it like they’re taking a clap bomb from the blue line; then I think they’re doing it intentionally to send a message

Those goals represent a way for a high skill player to score a goal in an unexpected fashion. If Zegras for example just attempts a regular wraparound or a pass to the slot, the chances of that being successful are less than the Michigan, (for him) in that particular type of situation. With this ENG, scoring was not in doubt. It is fine to hate Michigan goals, but those sorts of goals are not like this. They represent an unconventional way to score a goal, within the rules. Are they against the code? Apparently not. I haven’t seen anyone get their head taken off for attempting the Michigan like we saw here with the ENG slapper.

Its a slapshot into an open net. If you can't handle that and deal with it, then you need to look into the mirror and ask yourself who you are. As for the fans, the leaf fans cheering on that high stick to the head are scumbags and this is why they are hated by everyone in the league.

I'd have been OK with Rielly going after Greig with anything up to, and including, dropping the gloves, but a clear attempt to injure crossed the line. Greig had it coming, but "it" was not a cross check to the head. Even if had dropped his gloves, started punching Greig, and Greig just turtled (it sure looked like he would have), the game was over, and he would have gotten 5+2+game, and maybe a 1 game suspension for last five minutes (maybe not though since Greig earned it). Here are my thoughts on this. 1. There is no rule for how you score an EN goal. If he wants to slap it from a few feet out, let him. Nothing unsportsmanlike about it, even wit a 5.1 left on the clock. Now if time expired, or it was offside, that I get. 2. I appreciate Morgan's response, but yeah, going for the head ain't it. 3. If the Leafs are going to get that pissy over an ENG, then maybe don't put yourself in a position to be pissy over an ENG.

Great assessment. I’m a little shocked at how many people are defending either one of them. Grieg needed a tuning up and knew it was gonna happen, but Reilly is better than that and should have handled it more responsibly. He isn’t doing his team any favours getting suspended. The fans defending that cross check, or saying he should have done something worse, need to have their heads checked.
