One trick I saw with Phillips, is to take a really fine grinding disk or file and cut across 2 dimples all the way to the outer edge. Then use a large as possible flat blade to get it out. It won't strip 'as' easily.

Hey leg arms. I hate to burst you bubble but that tool you made for Phillip's screws has been around for a long time like over 40 years. I called it a nut buster, I don't really know the correct name. I used it on airplanes, alot. I was actually made for airplanes. You can find it at aircraft tool supplies stores and the apex holders to hold the Phillips bits. Another thing I learned in all my years as an aircraft mechanic is to use valve lap compound in the head of Phillips screws that are worn a bit to get extra grip. It works great. I hope you have a blessed day. Keep those tractors rolling.

Difference is the aviation ones are made to fit rivet guns, they're using an air hammer, diameter of the shank is different.

Thanks for another great video Welkers!!! It was interesting and informative and entertaining for sure. First of all your new truck is a very nice looking truck !!!!!! Looks great and has nice features and good tires and just good all the way around. Glad you got your hands on it. Now the process of pulling the old motor (done already) and getting your new used motor in the new used body. Am sure there will be adjustments but to be expected. Hopefully all of that will go just fine and smoothly. Scott a good job of painting the motor. Next time please wear a mask. Just a suggestion is all. Motor looks good painted. Nice work. And you have upgraded the grain trailers also I hear. When all done your new truck and trailer will look great!!!!!!!! Nice work all the way around. Like your new truck. Looking forward to seeing it running and going down the road. Prayers to all of you. Thanks for everything. You all take care and be safe. The Iowa farm boy. Steve. Got to have a name for the new truck. How about ; Go Get Em!!! Or Farm Trucker!!!

That C12 is a worthy engine to rebuild. During my driving career I drove many trucks with the C12. It is quite stout when set at 430HP, it can be run up to 445HP. The engine was great when used in weight sensitive applications.

check your rear valve cover, they dont like chains, get a 379 radiator support for the engine, one mount per side of the engine with a flat plate over the valve cover with the taper bushings on each front side, total pain, hated petes when you have to remove them, also check your transmission shift top cover, the set back may force you to get a new top. there are three different tops, rear, middle, and front.

I read a comment recently from a know it all, basically if you have to make a tool, you don’t own the right tool. Which is stupid. What about necessity is the mother of invention? There are constantly the need for a new tool. You can also improve on existing ones. Keep up the good work.

I’m all for electric vehicles for folks in metro areas commuting. But the ability for farmers-or whoever drive semis daily-to swap and repair old stuff is what makes diesel’s relevant still. Edison motors hybrid truck is pretty cool. Also the option to use vegetable oil-yes, it works, better in warm climates, however very labor intensive in gathering fuel-is still an option.
@williamdowns1917
@williamdowns1917 6 ай бұрын
As you found out, the 3406 is a larger motor than the C12. Pay attention to what your driveline angles will want to be when you want to reposition the rear mounts. Also, this truck is a set-back front axle and you have the oil pan position that's normally used on a set forward axle. You might need to flip the pan to provide clearance to the axle and tie rod....But you've probably already figured that out if it is a problem.

As I recall working at Cat, when the engine number got up graded to a new series and adding significant horsepower, some of the internal parts got an upgrade-----such as pistons, rings, bearings, etc. Beware of how much power you are adding without needing internal upgrades.

I recommend that you remove frame horns and hood from 379 and move them to the 377. Rough use will cause the hoods to crack vertically up beside inside of headlights on 377.

A solid hard five day job working full time to do everything done in just minutes. Glad its you as my day came and now way way gone by. I had armstrong and a couple air tools. No big tools that were powered by a battery or even air. As said, if going to sema and being a trailer queen... might of done different but its a work truck with TWO chrome stacks! More to maintain but driver pride does help as its the new kid on the block. DOT seems to avoid stopping rigs that are nice looking, even with broken frames and fifth wheels falling off. I have drove old mack trucks (yes break your back comes to mind) that would be there every day working their guts out, underpowered and blowing smoke but made good money every day. You could start it in the coldest days and still have some heat in the cab around most of the airholes in the frame and body throwing dirt in your face. If put on the highway, might of made it a half mile before going to the hoose gow for a good year! Nice work gentlemen. Hard to make it entertaining when its a no fun job.

I like to use an electric soldering iron pressed against the head of a stuck fastener for a minute or two to apply heat to the fastener and allow it to rotate, but I've only used it on small fasteners. It just puts heat where you need it and isn't as good as those induction heaters, but everyone usually has a soldering iron.

I’ve done that pulled my 425 b model and ll8sp and put it in where 12.7 Detroit was. Greatest thing I’ve ever done. Only thing I had trouble getting the way I liked it was fuel peddle angle. Had to trim frame rails as the front cover was wider on the cat. Such a good idea.

Two questions Would the back engine mounts from the C12 fit the 3406 and fit right where the frame mounts were? 2nd. How close is the oil pan to the axle.....might have to get a front sump model oil pan. I think the C12 was set up that way. The difference is that the first Pete was a set forward axle, the second on a setback axle. Just my two cents

I drove one set at 430 HP with 1450 Ft Lbs of torque for over 671,000 miles and never had any problems with it hauling freight from coast to coast. One thing you dont want do with what engine is to run it hot and have the head bolts torque checked every 100.000 miles. I loved my C-12 and called it, " My itty bitty Kitty with an attitude", because it sure had one.
