Has a counselor (or treatment center) ever told you to set boundaries with an addict or alcoholic by creating a home contract? If so, then you probably already know this never works. It's bad advice and will end up blowing up in your face! Watch this video to discover a better way of setting boundaries with an addict or alcoholic.
How to prevent relapse after treatment: You've paid a ton of money for your kid to go to rehab. You've invested a lot of time and energy into getting your kid sober, and now it's time to bring them home from treatment.
Sure, having a home contract makes you feel better, but does it actually work?
Treatment centers are going to encourage you to create a home contract before releasing your child from rehab. They may even want you to have a family session about it to make sure there is a good aftercare plan.
But, they just aren't effective. Your kid will say anything to get relapsed from addiction treatment. They may even mean it when they say it, but ultimately they won't keep their word. They will, however, make sure you keep your word!
Of course, you have to have boundaries, but you don't have to set a bunch of consequences. Hope For Families suggest you keep your boundaries general, and you don't have to say what the consequences will be.
This leaves you the flexibility to decide consequences at the time of the event.

Thank you. Both of you are wise women. Love the story about the moat and the Berlin Wall. So true! Boundaries are about me and what helps me feel grounded and safe. This whole channel has been so very helpful. Thank you both.

What if they are an adult child living with you? It's a little more difficult to set rules. She Is supposed to pay rent and car insurance and her phone. But pre rehab she was staying out all night and I was caring for her animals.

I really think your family therapist was right on boundaries not rules, definitely backed myself into a corner many a time, made secretivemess more likely and got really wound up trying to play detective which encouraged them to stay in a childlike dependency, saying I expect you to be respectful and not use drugs gives them back responsibility whilst having clear general self supportive ways, it gives the addict choice and less to be angry with the parent about, it means you can have casual conversations because there is not so much resentment bubbling away, as you say nothing is perfect or even really good but ok is a better way to get thru....thank you

Who can handle this much stress? It's way harder to be a gf of someone like this, unless they are under 18, I say put them into a sober home, then have sober home help them get a job. Some people start this drug stuff when they are young, if you don't take care of it, they will grow up being a terror, ruining every relationship. I really believe in having 2 sober parents, learned behavior is dangerous.

My addict is required to use a smart phone and make his number public for his job. I like the idea of flip phone and detaching from social media bc that is a common route for my addict but cannot figure out how to eliminate that one.
