Gallbladder Surgery can have some complications afterwards including a possible bowel obstruction. Why does this bowel obstruction happen after gallbladder surgery and what can be done?
SUBSCRIBE: / jhsurgery
Bowel obstruction after gallbladder surgery. In this video I discuss how and why people get bowel obstruction after gallbladder surgery. We typically get this after open gallbladder surgery and a lot less with laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.

Worst decision of my life to get my gallbladder removed. We need it. Do all you can to improve your eating habits and your health. Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal. So try to avoid having parts cut out. There’s so much stuff out there posing as food, but it really isn’t.
@VenturiLife

Sometimes it just has to come out, as it gets infected all the time from stones blocking the bile duct. Unfortunately specialists / hospitals won't generally just remove stones except in specific cases, they'll remove the gallbladder as a permanent solution. You can live without the thing, but you DO have to adjust diet (more fibre helps for sure).

I understand ur point for 2 years I managed my gallbladder pain through healthier eating habits. For some time it worked and my body was getting better. But one day I had a very bad gallbladder attack out of nowhere. It lasted for 6 hours and I was puking blood. I ended up having surgery even though I could’ve avoided that situation if I’d removed it earlier.

My gallbladder removed 2weeks ago. Theres no pain that i am encountered inside internally after my operation. Feeling fine, my mind also free from thinking from the attack of pain like before. That's why I can sleep well and also eat well with a delicious and healthy food with control of course.

I have a small bowel obstruction just under where my top laparoscopic gallbladder scar is. They have FINALLY determined that it is a small bowel obstruction that painfully flares up from time to time, (about 3x a year since my surgery more than 15 years ago) when doctors told me they couldn’t for 15 years figure out what was causing me pain. So it’s been recently determined that it is directly underneath my laparoscopic scar. And yet, I cannot get anyone to admit that this is a likely situation that it was caused by my healing from laparoscopic gallbladder surgery. Even though I have a herniated muscle in the exact place as well. I can’t imagine why they continue to say (even laugh and say) that it is unrelated to the surgery location and they need to “discover the cause“ of my small bowel obstruction (come in again during an attack for another scan since there is no apparent physical blockage in my intestine). This has been since i was 19 and I’m exhausted. I swear it’s like no one will listen to me. Thank you SO much for this video! I knew it had to be possible!!

Sometimes with abdominal surgeries you can get things that were operated on sticking to each other when they heal, like the bowel wall sticking to abdominal wall or the membrane in the abdominal cavity with scar tissue, there is a medical term for it (adhesions I think). If it causes problems, they can perform a small surgery to cut it loose again. I know a woman who had that happen from a caesarian as they got too carried away and the bowel attached to the membrane, got obstructed / infected and caused major issues, and had to be shortened.

Same here dude. Crippling pain, 8-9/10 for the last 3.5 years and just now doctors are really getting around to investiging whether or not its related to my gallbladder surgery. I got every blanket diagnosis imaginable. "IBS" was the worst one, as its entirely just a cop out. Getting ultrasounds and CT scans done, and regardless of what they find Im getting an exploratory surgery done. I can live in this much pain for the rest of my life. From the age of 32 to 35 I have spent most of it in bed with crippling pain, when before hand I was a high performing self taught telemetry engineer and small business owner. I have been on work from home orders for 2 years and thankfully my business is a close friend that I trust greatly. They understand that I am to the point that I will disembowel myself in the hospital parking lot and they will have to solve the problem regardless. This problem WILL get solved.

For you to not get to that point, that my wife is at, find out how to file a complaint about the inexperienced physicians, it is simple as a professional complaint. that is my opinion, because your life is at risk....

To the person who had laparoscopic surgery pain afterwards, the doctors are supposed to leave drainage tubes in for a short time to drain the gas that was put into your stomach to inflate it for the surgery. If that gas isn’t expelled properly it is a terrible feeling, making you feel like you can’t pass gas or belch and it’s the most uncomfortable thing I have ever known. In the future make sure you tell the doctors in the surgery room to make sure all the gas is expelled before they remove those tubes.
@VenturiLife
@VenturiLife Жыл бұрын
It's CO2 they inflate you with, it usually causes referred intense shoulder pain for a while until it's absorbed/expelled, as the body signals pain from the abdomen / liver area there for some reason.

Can anyone explain post gallbladder removal surgery, I had mine in 2018 me ever since then I’ve had weird bowl movements issues. My case is the throughout the day (especially in the morning) once I’ve had my meal I NEED to use the bathroom about 10-15 minutes later and immediately or else, also my bowl movements are weird because I take a while in the bathroom as it doesn’t all come out at once and sometimes I’m in the bathroom for 30 minutes and sometimes even more. I’ve learned to work around it but it’s still extremely annoying especially when I go out.

Avoid seed oils, and eating at night (strangely animal fats don't seem as bad), bile seems to struggle with breaking down seed oils, remember our bodies never truly adapted to them as seed oils are quite modern. Had better results with Pariet 10mg for GERD / reflux, check with your GP / doctor.

How long can this go on? Can it start up randomly. My husband had his removed at 13. Anything and everything was wrong with it. His mom had to push for the testing. The hospital here is horrible. He is 34 now. He spends 30 to 1 hour in the bathroom. Every now and then it is quick. He has constipation and diarrhea. Sometimes separately. Sometimes in the same bowel movement. Most of the time the bowel movement is urgent. It happens almost every time he poops. He has to poop every morning, but it is always diarrhea. He can rarely get up without it gurgling. It smells so bad that it can go through to the next room. He says it feels like acid most days, his stomach hurts. Fiber does nothing. It varies from light brown to yellow. Some foods/drinks do make it worse, but I think it affects the smell. It does seem greasy, when he has diarrhea. Most days are diarrhea. He has horrible gas. Silent and also loud and forceful. He has even woken himself up, and he has sleep apnea. He has a huge appetite, but it’s at meal times and usually when he has been active or worked hard at his physical job. He is 5,10 and 250/260. His weight did double since highschool but he did end up with a sit down job. His muscle density and strength is the same and has endurance. he has a hard time losing weight and cutting back on portions. It has gotten progressively worse over ten years. I don’t remember him being like this in highschool 17 years ago. Our oldest transglutenese number of 281 and his first cousins daughter has Celiac disease. Our youngest son has Lactose enzyme number 2 and Sucrase deficiency enzyme number 22. The GI just wants to add Fiber. Our Celiac just had an obstruction and had a NG tube last April and if both children (X-rays in July) do not show improvement soon. They both may have to have an NG tube. Many of the symptoms were of our children. I think it’s the obstruction or celiac but blood work is normal. Scope and bloodwork minus transglutenese was normal on celiac but it was a fresh diagnosis. Is a obstruction possible. Celiac kid had that. That was his diarrhea/constipation issue? Should we see a GI. I feel like this GI is dismissive. He seems to dismiss me to once he found out I have anxiety and depression.

They would eventually pass but some attacks would last 8 hours and then I would be sore and not well for days. Fast forward to now I was in extreme pain and couldn’t go to the toilet. Went to the hospital and they diagnosed me with small bowel obstruction due to adhesions from previous surgery’s. I had to have open bowel surgery to remove 6 inches of my small bowel.

They were tied so tight that the surgeon could not physically pull them apart…they were cut and sewn back together. I am so lucky to be alive. I thank God everyday. Now I fear it happening again. My surgeon says he can never say never to anything medically, but that the odds of the volvulus that bad to cause sepsis would be extremely rare to happen twice. @VenturiLife

I'd say more fibre, eating some bread etc. within reason, can help with better bowel movements. The issue is that the gallbladder constantly produces bile that is dumped into the small intestine, as it's no longer warehoused in the gallbladder for release when you eat a fatty meal etc. Starches like rice etc. don't help much, potato may, but bread/gluten seems to give it something to work on and calm the digestion down and prevent gastric dumping kind of thing that races through the bowel. The vision thing is probably something else I'd say, pretty unrelated.

No id say its very related, your gall bladder was in charge of your fat solvable vitamins including A, E and D ect. Since you won't absorb vit A because your gallbladder is gone now, take supplements to improve your eye sight. Your gallbladder used to process those fat solvable vitamins out from your food. Take all the fat solvable vitamins

That went on for some time. Then the burning spread to my left and down both sides. Eventually my entire body was inflamed. My skin felt like it was burning and it was hot to the touch. Now it has gone even deeper. My joints hurt my muscles are week. I get head aches and shooting pains in my head. And that's the short version of all of my symptoms. I am being poisoned from whatever it is going on in that spot. I got a HIDA scan, but it didn't show a leak. What else could it possibly be? I'm still having the same problems and weight loss as well before surgery I weighed 127lbs now I weigh 106lbs it's very worrisome.. I think I made a mistake by having my gallbladder surgery I could have just had the gallstones removed but opted for surgery because I thought I'd get 100% better but I've had more problems since having it out 😔 I thought I needed some medicine to help gain nutrients from foods but after having a stool test my gastroenterologist said it was fine so now I'm just a mystery. I hope that you two are able to figure out what is going on with y'all hopefully you will both have better luck than I have had! 🙏

@@marcirathbone8998 that sucks.. I am soo sorry you are having to go through this.. I was thinking maybe its an infection or something or my liver, because I do drink alcohol but they said I don't have cirrhosis or anything like that, so I'm confused as to why its happening... and then for your doctor to tell you its fine is weird.. I would ask another doctor..

@@kreeplok123 i hope you are able to find out what's going on with you maybe an upper and lower endoscopy could help find out some things going on.. I did have an infection and was on antibiotics for a couple weeks went back to the doctor to be retested and they said it was gone but still dealing with the same issues so I really don't know what else it could be but I am considering getting another opinion from a different doctor cause ya the last one said everything looks fine from stool sample blood work and urine. I hope it's not your liver usually if you have liver problems your skin and eyes will become yellow too..

I had my gallbladder out 2 years ago. 3 times since then I have have obstructions that eventually passed after 8 hours of vomiting bile and severe abdominal pain and nearly passing out several times. I couldn't even stand up, between the low energy, pain and nausea it was horrible. But after hours each time I eventually was able to painfully pass the biggest stool of my life which also gave me internal hemorrhoids. I'm also an addict I am a fentanyl iv user for 5 years everyday now. I can't tell if this problem is because of my gallbladder or the fentanyl or a combination. Any advice would be helpful since I can't afford to go the hospital

I had robotics surgery removed gallbladder. I don’t need to stay in the hospital. After 2 weeks no pains. If you have pains, you need to removed gallbladder. In the future you will have infections. My sister in law never have pain in her stomach, suddenly in the Morning she has severe pain and vomiting. She went to er found out her gallbladder infection and appendix. She have laparoscopic surgery removed both organs. We have different holes on the stomach.

I had my gall bladder removed last year, I had severe infection caused by a large stone caught in the duct (paraphrasing). Almost a year later and I still have issues reverse to what I have been warned. Rather than watery/urgent stool evacuation, I have constipation/hard stool. I wonder if due to being vegetarian.. I eat a balanced, healthy diet and drink plenty of water.. This boggles mind.

@@alexandrear2115 Well.. It's kind of normal the first few months after to be constipated easily. Are you on pain medicine? The Dr switched mine. I couldn't go for about 8 days after surgery I suggest a lot if water and try sone Psylium husk in a smoothie. Anything high fibre will help clear the intestines and colon as it pulls water and debris as it moves through High fruit and veg, and with me I ate more soy for protein as it's gentler on digestion. Oh also, no fizzy! It blocks you up! I wish you luck!

Erin I developed a severe type of diarrhea that is ALWAYS labeled as IBS. This is not IBS!!! it’s called bile acid diarrhea. Many people who develop this are struggling with malnutrition and look like cancer patients and they are ignored by the medical community. They give you off label drugs used for high cholesterol to control this and they don’t work. People have diarrhea to the point where they need fluids. This is dangerous and I wished my surgeon told me about this complication!!!!!! NEVER remove your gall bladder. Take care of it.
