Good job with your video man, I'm glad to see that someone made a recent review of these. You hit all the main points. I have the 552's, the 1090's and the bowflex 2080 barbell with the upgraded weight so it goes up to 120lbs now. My 1090's are still new in the box lol. But I love having 2 sets so I can workout in multiple locations at home and I know I will want to go beyond 52lbs eventually. I also have a gym membership but I have enough equipment at home now (mostly thanks to covid lockdowns), that I know I can make a significant change to my body just at home. Still, I'll keep my membership because it's not that much money and I like popping in there every now and then to get out of the house. My workout routine is very off and on....I start and stop like most people. But anyways, I will just say that for my size (5'10, 190lbs), I do find the 552's very adequate in the sense that I know I can still build a lot of muscle because I don't feel limited by the weight at all. Do I wish I just bought the 1090's in the first place? Yeah kind of...especially when they were a really awesome price during holiday sales here in Canada, but it is what it is. I think these dumbbells are awesome and I will keep one set outside in the summer time. I also have the bowflex kettlebell which is really nice, and I'm getting the bowflex max trainer, lol. You're right that you won't feel hindered by the long length of these. When doing chest presses I sometimes turn them to the side to achieve full range of motion. Adjustable dumbbells, brand names aside, are just a great invention period. I love that you can hit so many different weights in one piece of equipment. Sorry to ramble on but yeah, maybe I will shoot my own youtube video because I have a lot of gear as well and I just don't see enough videos on youtube about bowflex's gear I own. Thanks!

Great reply and thank you for your input. I must say I don’t know your limitations but you will need the 1090 set very soon if you haven’t moved on already from the 552s. It is nice to have an extra set-especially for a woman or older trainer to use the 2.5lb increment adjustments of the 552s.

Based on personal needs, the 552's can be more than sufficient in terms of gains. I'm 62 and trying to get back into shape. I'm not a big guy, and I have no desire to create a lot of bulk, so the 552 series is perfectly fine for me. Also, if you concentrate enough on the eccentric contraction aspect of each exercise, I think you get get the most out of the 52lb. weight limitation, so having 90lb. max dumbells are almost superfluous...at least as far as my needs are concerned.

Your review is decent, although I was scratching my head at a few things in your video: -Do you have elbow issues? Asking due to the half reps in most of your presses. Not a criticism, just curious. -You say they don't have workout programs, but I see you skip over the upper/lower workouts they provide in the manual! -You CAN get a good leg workout with these. Try Farmer Squats (held at sides) with some versa grips (or grips of your choosing) to get a decent heavy trap-bar like squat/deadlift. Also, try the Wide Squat (Sumo Squat) with one 90# DB for reps! Granted, you won't be doing 1-3 rep max sets with these, but you can really work your gams for reps! I've had the 1090's for 10 years now, and have had no issues with them (never dropped!). I've found them versatile and mostly all I've needed for my own strength training (I've incorporated resistance bands recently too). For anyone getting these, besides the bench, the rack that Bowflex sells is quite sturdy for these and makes it nice to not have to pick them up off the floor. I also recommend some wraps (versa grips are excellent) for various rowing and heavy leg work (90# each hand doing farmer squats). Overall I enjoyed your review and look forward to checking out others...

Thank you for your input. When I train chest I often do not lock out so as not to tire out the triceps and keep more of the tension on the pectorals. I agree you can train legs effectively however they are not as effective as plate loaded machines or barbells for building muscle mass in the lower body.

Was that considered dropping the dumbbell @ 11:50? I don't want to break the plastic over time.

No, what he meant was just don't throw them like some ppl do at the gym, putting it down slow or normal is no problem, they can resist some beating

Thanks for doing this review. You convinced me to keep my 1090s!

They’re worth keeping for life. You can’t put a price on resistance training at your grasp especially after 2020z

Glad you love the video! Thanks and nice price-you can’t beat having a full set of dumbbells from 10-90lbs in a small package.

How are incline curls with the 1090's? since they're so bulky.

Good on you for admitting your mistake with the 552s haha. We learn from our mistakes. We don't learn if we don't admit the mistake.

I don’t recall saying I made a mistake but-I started with the 552s because in March of 2020 they were scarce like toilet paper. I upgraded to 1090s and just went ahead and overpaid. But it was well worth the money even marked up-I needed weight to move bad.

I do lol this was a temporary solution because of all the gym closures in my area. It served me well and will serve as an emergency gym into the future.
