Welcome back to Bowling Science!
Today we tackle a controversial topic as of late, using URETHANE instead of SHORT PIN layouts on reactive resin balls. Both hook less when you need it, and both can score well, so why the fuss? Stay tuned and find out what URETHANE can do to an oil pattern.

I started throwing short pins this year and took me a bit to get used to it do. I have high axis tilt.. and gotten so used to everything being so skid flippy for me. Now I'm absolutely in love on how much more controllable this layout is. And tend to get to play the same area alot longer.

I think it's true that urethane may be worse at carrying pins, but there is also the amount of miss area you have on the lane to still hit the pocket, which is usually larger with a urethane ball, especially on sport patterns.

My main ball is a hammer big blue which I’ve been told is a urethane. I don’t have much revs so this ball helps get back to the pocket a lot. Also gotta point out something about this house, I love how they have the deck lights flash between red and blue on a strike. I have never seen a deck light do that before.

Even when I tell my friends I prefer short pin layouts since they preserve the pattern better than urethane I still get weird looks. Best thing with short pin reactive is that you can still move inside and shape the pattern when the dead straight line isn't working anymore

The pros for a urathane on a short sport would be way more control in the mid lane (less chance of throwing it in the ditch). Also, you do create that carry down of the oil; however, in a tournament, you usually move after every game. Would you want your competitors moving to that lane to bowl well?

Great video I was curious to see the actual results with short pins. Only con I have is I wish you would bowl 2 games on each lane fresh with each ball to show if the short pins blend the patterns better. On the house shot it doesn’t do a justice to the short pin after transition the layout isn’t made for the breakdown especially with all the units in the middle that’s why it was rolling out.

Technically speaking, urethane is actually a strong cover. That's why it hooks so early. Great video though. I've had many short pin balls and many urethane balls, both one handed and two handed, and there's still pros and cons to each. In my opinion, short pin resin doesn't replace urethane. Also, besides urethane, I find weaker, low flare resin balls (especially shiny ones) also carry oil down. A couple weeks ago my team was bowling the ghost team. Two of our bowlers were missing too. I had the right side all to myself. I started out throwing the Twist. Wasn't long before I had to ball up. Then my Counter Attack Pearl also started to skate. Ended up using my 900 Global Space Time Continuum the rest of the night.

Never thought about how much carry down urethane can cause. I haven't rolled a urethane ball in years but some of the people I bowl against do and they do break the lane down faster for sure. I was looking at a urethane ball for when my house shot is a bit dryer or has been bowled on a lot and broke down. I might just buy another reactive ball and have it drilled like this. Everyone is always looking for a massive hook I just want a more controllable hook when the lanes are less forgiving.

Personally I've been using a Storm Mix which is a pearl urethane for years now and I've really never had much of a problem with oil transition. Have bowled many 200 games with it. But that's probably because I'm more rev dominant and slower then average speed, so oil doesn't seem to affect my carry as much as the night goes on.
@jacklane734
@jacklane734 4 жыл бұрын
Typically the effects of urethane aren't very drastic with casual bowlers. It's much more exaggerated when you have a good shot maker who consistently gets the ball to the break point in the same spot. Lower average bowlers will spread a little bit of oil across a large chunk of the lane while higher average guys will load up the traffic area with oil.
