I think Fury is naturally more extroverted than AJ. For me a true measure of confidence is what a man does. AJ fought top 10 opposition far quicker than Fury. 19th fight for AJ was Klitschko, Fury’s was Vinny Maddalone. No comparison. Fury in his career has appeared to avoid fights. He avoided David Price, mandatory defence of British title, yep he vacated. He avoided the Klitschko rematch, pulled out twice. He didn’t take the Wilder rematch straight away. Was offered the AJ fight on his comeback, chose Wilder. Didn’t want to fight Whyte as an eliminator for the WBC belt. Fury’s record is sketchy and very inconsistent. This is a sure sign of psychological weakness. Inconsistency.

Comparing when AJ fought Vlad and when Fury fought Vlad is pointless. Aj had 44 professional rounds when he fought Vlad and has still only boxed 122 rounds, fighting in 10 world title fights. Fury had boxed 134 rounds before he fought Vlad, and now boxed 191 rounds, fighting in 3 world title fights, which is a bit of a difference. There was also the added pressure of virtually selling out every arena he’s pretty much fought in, up to 90,000 at Wembley. The pressure of belt collecting, unifying along the way, with the lure of an undisputed always around the corner. Aj has done pretty well I would say.

@@smokemeakipper1076 not much left apart from him boxing skill, speed, movement, punch variety, ring IQ, height and range? Yes, he cedes some of those points to Fury - but not all of them. AJ has never solely relied on his power, hence why he’s barely lost a round in his entire career. Fury might be able to take the sting off those shots by riding them, but he won’t manage to do that with all of them unless it’s a low volume fight. If it is a low volume fight, it’s then on AJ to force the pace. Whether he will or not is yet to be seen.

I don't believe Fury is more confident than AJ at all. Fury come across as one of those guys who talks a lot to compensate for his insecurities..........not everything is what it seems. There’s nothing wrong with AJ being cautious due to his loss against Ruiz. He has done tremendously to recover and change his style. He can’t go into ring, thinking he will knock everyone out. Look at how Klitschko fought cautiously after his knockout losses. He started clinching a lot. Can Fury recover if he gets knocked out, I highly doubt. You measure a mans strength, by how he recovers after defeat.

I wouldn't confuse Fury's ability to get under people's skin with his confidence. He's good at getting under people's skin and making them doubt themselves, as he's quick-witted and doesn't mind being brash and rude. His confidence though I'd question. There's a reason he's only fought 1 top 50 fighter in 5 years.

Hatman you really are giving Fury way to much credit for beating Wilder. History will eventually show that Wilder wasn't very good and was carefully matched his whole career. Further, you highlight Fury's confidence before the Klitchko fight. That was his twenty sixth fight. Joshua hasn't even had twenty six fights. Fury beat Klitchko by being messy and fiddly. He never had him hurt or on the canvas. I've been watching boxing a long time like you. If i saw something in Fury i'd say 'yeah. He's the real deal'. I just don't. I can't see a way Fury finishes the Joshua fight on his feet. In fact i don't think the fight will happen because i don't think Fury really wants it.

@@craigg4219 Did you see Fury's face at the end of the Wallin fight! Joshua's going to knock Fury out in five rounds if they fight. I'm not fan boy of anyone's. Klitchko spent twelve rounds looking for the right hand. Wilder spent twenty four rounds just looking for the right hand. No real jab. No ability to set up shots. No ability to evade punches going backwards. Terrible footwork. He's an awful fighter. Joshua is also a better finisher. Wilder wastes much of his own good work because he is rash and hasn't cultivated his boxing skills. Joshua won't do that. I'm not a troll (way to old for that). I respect your opinion. True what u say. But confidence in other personalities is not displayed as is in others. Evander Holyfield has always been soft spoken and respectful but his will to want to win is up there with the most confident. Joe Louis was the same but his tenacity in the ring was special. Just because you loud and respect no one doesn't necessarily mean you have the inner fortitude and resilience to be the best in the game I guess is what I want to point out. Joe Calzagi was bullied in school and wasn't one to voice confidence but he fought with heart ...I felt the need to say this because many people make the mistake of not taking time to read a person but go on the noise they make. He said this, or didn't therefore he is scared or he will win etc

I'm Surprised you used Holyfield as your standard bearer. As one of the biggest drugs cheats of his day, probably even more prolific than big baby Miller, he walked round at 12stone but had an anabolic induced fighting weight of 15stone. Holyfield's obsession with Tyson probably stemmed from knowing that he had a huge advantage over fighters who were clean. And, Big punchers nearly always used the stare down to get an edge over their opponents, Liston, Foreman & Tyson were all noted for their 'evil eye stare downs' but proved to be pretty ordinary when their punching power was nullified by the nimble elite boxer.......

A person's demeanor is not always the yardstick for determining who is more mentally strong or weak. Being braggadocios and staring people in the eyes does not equate to mental toughness either! AJ used the Pulev fight to not only knock out Pulev, but also display and practice new found skills and abilities he's been practicing in the gym. We all know he could have dispatched Pulev earlier but he chose not to, this was to give fans more value for their money, and to demonstrate certain abilities which was a signal to Fury. With some people, AJ can never do anything right. If Fury did what AJ did to Pulev, you and many others who are impressed with him would be singing his praises. If Mayweather fought the way AJ did an opponent the world would be singing his praises. AJ brings out something new & all you can see is weakness. I'm sorry, you're a Fury fan boy!

Hatman is just proving once again he doesn’t know the meaning of objectivity, and by extension subjectivity. ‘Facts’ in a boxing match relate to those things which are beyond dispute. If a boxer is hit, falls flat, and is counted out, that he/she was ‘knocked out’ becomes a matter of ‘fact’. You can therefore then say, objectively, that the boxer was knocked out. On the other hand, anyone’s judgement of a boxer’s performance has to be based on an interpretation, i.e. an opinion, and can be affected by bias and assumption..often unconsciously so, and this falls into the realm of the subjective. By literal definition, there is nothing objective about an ‘opinion’ of any boxer’s performance. Any claim to the contrary is to clearly misunderstand the very basic difference between subjectivity and objectivity. For Hatman to claim that because Teddy Atlas and some other’s share his opinion as to though validate his own opinion as an objective one, is to further demonstrate a misunderstanding of objectivity vs subjectivity. Teddy Atlas is well qualified to give his opinion of any boxing performance, but that doesn’t make his analysis any any less subjective.

Agree with a lot of points here regarding fighter psychology. However, there so many variables that we don't know that makes it hard to make a firm diagnosis on AJ. One thing that I haven't seen considered by many because the memories of the Ruiz fight is so vivid is that AJ is implementing a new style and employing a new style confidently is very hard to do. To me, I don't see total confidence in his new style more than I see him scared of taking shots. I saw him take shots against Ruiz and Pulev and start talking smack and slap his chest. I think there's been a SLIGHT exaggeration in his mental fragility.

Just finished watching counter boxing. I'm not a fan of AJ, neither I'm a fan of Tyson Fury. Meanwhile, Tyson Fury has a better Boxing IQ and his Mental capacity is phenomenal. Tyson Fury can mentally defeat any boxer. He has the natural instincts. That's why he's more congruent in the field of boxing. It's not about your muscles. Everything starts from the mental capacity. We have to take emotions out of this and face reality. Tyson Fury is a better boxer hands down.

This is why I disagree with hatman sometimes. He said he thought AJ wasn’t as confident against Wlad as Fury was. What kind of comparison is that? Why does that matter? As long as a fighter gets the job done why does it matter which one had more confidence? Did AJ have enough confidence to get the job done? Yes! These comparisons are irrelevant.
@DirtyJamesUK
@DirtyJamesUK 2 жыл бұрын
The comparisons are interesting. And I'm not sure they're irrelevant. AJ was like a swimmer new to the deep end, who almost drowned but conquered it in the end. Fury was like a more confident swimmer who dared to play games in the deep end and somehow never came close to drowning. He taunted the water, and the water dared not try anything.

The title was boxing psychology: AJ vs Fury but yet again it’s the same old thing from all the boxing people doing videos maximum criticism towards AJ none towards anyone else. AJ shows weaknesses agreed but why is that? Because he’s fighting better competition so he will be hurt he will be down but he’s still fights better opposition. I’m fan of boxing only but come on fury in he’s last 6 fights 4 where complete nobody’s know one talks about that what about the psychology of fighter choosing to fight the lowest risk fights to get maximum praise. Again I’m a fan of boxing not just the boxers but come on this passive aggressive AJ bashing is getting boring there are other boxers other than fury and AJ

I actually think it's a good thing Joshua is showing some hesitation/ psychological damage. He was always going to after getting beat up by Ruiz, especially taking the immediate rematch. Instead of this psych damage making him lose, he won both the rematch and the Pulev fight. I think psych damage was inevitable (unless he was a deluded person which brings massive problems of it's own) for his subsequent 2 or 3 fights but after that he could well evolve into a much stronger fighter because of it.

I think in the actual ring Fury is so much more mentally strong and secure with himself. It's where he is most confident and most himself. Out of the ring AJ is stronger and Fury is more fragile. AJ has the life he wants, he has a good relationship with his kids/friends and he knows what he wants in the future. I'm no fanboy of either but it's a genuine 50/50 fight. Fury should win on paper but who knows

@@TEEK466 Based on the fact he's beaten two top top long reigning HWs away from home when most people said he'd lose to both. Wlad who couldn't land a glove on him and Wilder who he walked down. Fury's style is wrong for AJ. He can go 12 rounds, he recovers fast, AJ often gasses, AJ gets too excited when he lands a good punch. AJ may have the better overall resume but on paper Fury has fought at the highest level twice and won both times. AJ has not. He's just beaten a lot of very good level HWs.

A.j's stand out weakness can't be rectified with psychology unfortunately. It's obvious if he puts together two or more, sustained combo's in a round, his energy reserves immediately dip way into the red zone. For example, in the Klitschko fight he was completely out on his feet in round five, and was there for the taking - and it's been seen in flashes several times since. Anyone capable of forcing him to work at a tempo higher than he's comfortable with, round after round, will exploit this lack of stamina.

Regarding confidence, I believe that beyond a certain threshold, confidence is overrated and at worst can even become pathological. To illustrate this, look no further than the Wilder. You just have to imagine that Deontay Wilder is a more confident actor than Anthony Joshua, yet in this case, the more confident fighter is not the more self evidently mentally strong.
