Everytime I hear about someone not taking allergies seriously I remember the coconut story. The oP had 2 kids, one with a serious allergy to coconut. The grandma used coconut oil on hair, refusing to believe the allergy was that bad. Spoiler, it was. Grandma was watching the kids one night, used coconut oil on the kids' hair and sent them to bed. Only when she checked on the allergic kid, they were blue. The grandmother deeply regrets it, but the OPs words still haunt me. She'll forgive her mom when she can hold her child again.

@@maryjanedodooiling hair is a thing in some cultures, especially ones where textured hair is more common. It's part hair care, but it's also somewhat of a ritual between mothers and daughters that can be important in some families. But coconut oil is not the only hair oil out there and that story really is so disturbing. I'm pretty sure the grandma thought that she was lying about the coconut allergy to prevent her from oiling the granddaughter's hair, which was obviously not the case. Also I think the grandma realized that she was really allergic before they went to bed and rinsed her hair, but didn't wash it or take the girl to the ER

3 kids, but it was more centered around the twin girls, poor big brother was sent to the neighbors as grandma and grandpa took the already deceased child to the hospital. All of those kids suffered, especially the younger twin who grew up as a twinless twin feeling like something was missing her whole life.

@sophdog2564 It's even worse than that. Grandma noticed she was having a reaction in the middle of the night so she DOSED THE KID WITH BENADRYL. That story raises my blood pressure every time I think about it. It's also the reason I will NEVER marry anyone with crazy/unreasonable parents. Won't catch me on r/JustNoMIL.

He'll probably end up with exactly "the type" his Mom wants when he's actually looking for marriage/kid material. In my experience, especially at the ages mentioned, it isn't uncommon for dating someone their Mom doesn't like to be a form of "rebellion" against the parent, but it's a cowardly rebellion as all the dislike tends to be pointed at the disliked partner rather than the "rebelling" child. My opinion: ex would probably eventually reveal he thought OP's piercings and hair were childish and she should "grow up", just like his Mom.

Gosh this garlic allergy story reminds me of something recent wit my parents. I suddenly turned allergic to cherries, and my parents doubted me. So I went without allergy meds for a day (I take them daily cause I'm allergic to like.. 8 things.) and ate 3 whole cherries.. My throat closed up, my lips swelled up, my tongue swelled and I could barely breathe. They finally believed me but they said 'take some honey so the reaction lessens'... Yes. I couldn't swallow and they wanted me to take honey. I left and went to the hospital by myself, pointing at my face, and barely managed a whisper with 'allergy'. They got me on antihistamine right away.. I'm no-contact with my parents now.

Story 2: I'm incredibly unsurprised the mom and David were using drugs, was either that or David was also abusive towards her as well given that the mom was enabling the abuse of the brother. I know. And her apologizing for not cueing in on the fact that her mom was back to using drugs. Like, it’s not her responsibility to monitor her mother’s drug use. She was already doing the bulk of the housework, paying bills, and watching over her kid brother. I wonder if the mom was working so much so she could afford her drugs. It puts a different spin on “she works so much but still doesn’t make a lot of money”. Yeah, piss on those Redditors who “yelled” at her for not taking “the proper steps”.

Story 1 (before update): NTA (of course), You and your BF have to stop going, until she stops this shit or at minimum make a portion for you that does not have garlic. His mom will not even make a change until it affects her relationship with her son. With most allergies every exposure makes the next attack worst, so every-time she tries to make you eat garlic she is loading the revolver loading it with a bullet and spinning the chamber. Yes right now your reaction is "just asthma" but it could quickly become full blown anaphylaxis. Story 1 (update 1): If anyone in my family (including friends) did this to an SO of mine I would never be around that family member for at least as long as the relationship lasted (possibly longer).

Story 1 My sister has an allergy to eggs. Many people refuse to accept that you can be allergic to eggs. My sister's mil deliberately mixed egg in with the meal to "prove" that my sister wasn't allergic. My sister took two mouthfuls and had to run to the bathroom to throw up. After that her mil understood that my sister did have an allergy and even found an egg free brand of salad cream that my sister could use. My sister is lucky because she throws up immediately if she eats egg. In more serious cases, an egg allergy can cause anaphalaxis. Story 2 Good for OP for pepoer spraying David. She shouldn't have done it but I don't blame her. David sounds like a bully and her mother sounds like the type of mother who puts her boyfriends over her children. The people cursing OP out for not going to CPS need to pull their horns in. OP has explained that she has been in care and it was not a good situation for her. As her mother is using again it gives OP a good reason to take her brother and stay with her dad. Her dad is a champion taking the brother who is not his child. I am glad that they are both safe and happy.

OP in story 2 did everything right, she protected her brother from a monster, a man who’s mooching and treating OP and her brother poorly whilst the mother just doesn’t care, and all she gets from her mother is “you ruined my relationship with David” OP, report David to the Police for assaulting a minor, let them know your mother didn’t care. See if there’s relatives that can take you both in temporarily/permanently if they’re able to offer. You are NOT safe, men like David will continue to get more and more violent and your mother won’t care because the violence isn’t directed at her. I say this as a child abuse survivor (violent brother and neglectful mother), I escaped at 18 with the help of a young persons charity, my mother regularly chose crappy men over my safety and your mother is pulling the same crap. It’s actually worth exploring staying with your dad and taking your brother with you, let the Police know your father will happily file for custody/adoption, whatever it takes. CPS won’t take your brother away as they like to keep families together, especially if a relative (your father for example) is willing to step up to keep you together. And lastly, don’t blame yourself, you’ve been parentified, your mother neglects you and expects you to being up your brother like he’s your own child, David will continue to get more and more violent and it’s obvious your mother doesn’t care about your safety, this is NOT your fault.

Story 2 (OP's comments): Do not pass on college, that would be an extremely stupid decision, especially with a full-ride scholarship. Otherwise you are most likley going to end up just like your mother, unable to cover the bills without your child helping. Call your father ask him about moving you and your brother in, then call the police/CPS. You father will qualify to receive money from the state to help raise your brother till you finish college and are able to take him in. S1: "I brought my own food but she freaked out and made the dinner uncomfortable for everyone." OP, this is your red flag right here. She's made garlic-free food before, but suddenly now can't live without it being in a single dish? And when you bring your own she has a temper tantrum? Keep bringing your own food and when she flips out, remind her that as long as she's going to put an item you're allergic to in EVERY dish, you're going to keep bringing your own meals. That said, she doesn't like you. She's trying to get rid of you, either by making you and your bf fight over this, or by your allergy eventually getting worse and killing you. And your bf sucks for allowing this to happen. S2: NTA, your mom is a huge AH. Sounds like you're parentified (taking care of your brother, doing a majority of the chores AND paying bills at 17?), but the part that made me want to pepper spray HER was her worrying about fixing her relationship with that abusive slug! Call CPS. Your dad can probably get temporary custody of your brother since his father legally abandoned him, and your home is an unsafe environment right now. Also, if brother's dad is on the birth certificate the courts could probably find him, it was up to your mother to sue for child support so that you weren't responsible for paying her bills.

I am Polish and am pretty badly allergic to beets, it would be worse if I were Russian and allergic to beets but whatever. I loved the traditional Christmas soup (which was made with beets) (1 day a year and I would take allergy medicine before hand) but I had to have it because I loved it. When it became three or four days of pain and lots of allergy medicine I stopped. I think if I were to become allergic to horseradish I would just have to hand in my Slavic card. Because I have food allergies my children’s pediatrician had me feed them NOTHING but formula/breast milk for the first year of their life. No cereal, cheerios or anything, just formula, it seems to have worked because they are 33 and 26 and have no food allergies when both I (mother) and their grandfather (my father) had many food allergies. I am also allergic to latex (anaphylactic) if you are allergic to latex you are also allergic to mangos and kiwis. Mangos are the seeds of the trees that latex is made from and kiwis are closely related to the plants.

Story 1 NTA: RUN OP! This story is almost as bad as the r post about a MIL who was poisoning her DIL's food during family events. One time the DIL switched meals with her husband (unbeknownst to either hubby or MIL). And yep, hubby got sick that night. When the DIL told her hubby about switching the meals, he violently attacked her (he knew all along what his mother was doing). It was evil

Story 1 The easy solution to the issue is not to attend the dinners or else my personal solution to dump spineless boyfriend. Story 2 Tell your mother you will call Children's Services on David if she decides to let him move back in. Also ask your mom if having a boyfriend and drugs is more important than her child's safety. Congratulations on the outcome to this bad situation.

story 1: this was my mother. as an adult I developed a sensitivity to onion and garlic, and I'm vegetarian and my mom just insisted on putting meat and garlic and onion in everything. if I cooked my own food she would eat it but complain it didn't contain garlic and onion. one time I went ahead and ate it while I was staying overnight with her, and she finally realized that it actually made me physically sick. she still continued to cook with meat and garlic and complain about my cooking without it, but at least she stopped trying to force me to eat it.

why do people think that anaphylaxis is the only reason to avoid food allergies? Allergies can and do advance. And if she's using her inhaler, she's definitely at risk of having a more and more severe reaction with each exposure. That's how my shellfish allergy advanced. I used to take a Benadryl after being exposed, then later I had to take one before and then after a meal with shellfish.... and then one day, I was in the ER because what I thought was asthma was actually anaphylaxis.... Now I'm hyper-vigilant. I don't eat pasta salad because people often include clam juice or other shellfish products thinking it's not in the same family.

I'm not allergic to it, but garlic and onions give me terrible headaches if I have a bit of them. Over the years I've been testing how much I can have before it gives me a splitting headache. This is a hard endeavour and I've struggled to get people to respect my avoidance of both in the past. I try nowadays because I love the taste of both.

The people in the comments of that last story clearly have no experience in the system. A bad home is far better than most foster homes. Foster care feels like a punishment at best and at worst is a more severe situation than the home you left.

S1: Me and my immediate family can't have milk. It's not lethal, but we do have digestive issues for days. I have a high pain tolerance, but even then the pain can get so bad I can't even move. With that said, the mom should've been arrested for potentially poisoning OP. S2: NTA. Staying with a trusted family member is a lot better option than CPS and the system. Sometimes it can help, but in most cases CPS takes years to do anything and the system can also fail (as OP stated). Regardless, it's no excuse to harass someone for not calling CPS. Have some empathy Redditors 🤦🏽‍♂️

Dang. Story 1 is just... I am allergic to chili (my lips itch and I get mouth sores. I also get really fucking pissed off and agressive, see below) and my mom would for *years* disregard me complaining about the pain cause she would "only put a little bit" into the food. I literally reached my breaking point when *I* cooked a whole batch of food and she spoiled it with chili after I was done and didn't tell me. I only noticed after I started eating, then accused me of throwing a tantrum after I blew up on her. She stopped doing it now, but that had been happening for literal years and she never apologised. Just pretends to not hear me if I bring it up. She also definitely acts like I'm an asshole for "forcing my family to eat 'unseasoned' food when I come to visit" (as if chili even has a taste beyond pain. It literally does not. It's a neurotoxin.) I recently talked to a dietologist btw and when I mentioned my symptoms she also said "yep. That is definitely an allergy"

This attitude kills people. A little girl died over something like this. Coconut oil… long story short grandma didn’t think that an allergy to coconut oil was real and was adamant that coconut oil should be applied to of both her granddaughters hair. Mom told her absolutely not.. one of the girls is allergic. Grandma said “oh fine!” Or something like that and let it go but one night when the girls spent the night she applied coconut oil to both of them before bed. The next morning she awoke to crying from one of them and found one crying and screaming next to her deceased sister.. she couldn’t breathe due to the swelling and it had killed her. She started having a reaction immediately.. and grandma just gave her an allergy pill and LET HER GO TO BED LIKE THAT. So yeah this is a big deal.. it can and will kill and it isn’t a joke.

I notice someone commented on this in passing, but then not much more was said about it, but giving someone food that you know impacts their health, is a prosecutable crime. It's treated legally as no different to putting poison in their food with the intent to kill them. It doesn't matter if it doesn't kill them, it doesn't matter if you think it won't kill them, it doesn't matter if historically it hasn't killed them, all that matters is that they have told you they have a medically diagnosed allergy that requires medical intervention of some kind to stabilize and you actively persist in still giving them the food that's an issue. It's pretty serious as a criminal offence. You occasionally hear about cases with vegetarians giving people soy meat substitutes to trick them into accepting that they don't actually need meat in their meals, only to have to deal with the legal consequences of soy allergy medical emergencies.

She did try to talk to him and he kinda did the nah you're crazy mom isn't hurting you. reddit advised to swap the plates around, and she did so when hubby went to bathroom. he got voilently sick that night and torn into her for swapping the plates when she confessed trying to show that mIL was doing something. last update was she filed for divorce.

Something you can blow off like lactose intolerance? Ask someone with lactose intolerance whether they can blow it off. Maybe out their asses after hours of bloating and cramping. That comment is offensive and hypocritical in the context of the post.

I have a jalapeño allergy. This is a pain in the ass as I'm Hispanic and live in South Texas. A lot and I mean a lot of the food served around here has jalapeños in them. The allergy isn't anything serious yet. Smelling the Jalapeños causes a tingling sensation on my lips and a numbing sensation on my tongue. If any of the viegar or juices from jalapeños gets on my skin will cause it to turn red and feel irritated like a chemical burn. My stomach will start gurgling and then I puke if I end up consuming jalapeño. I let my friends and family know about it. My mom thinks I'm being a drama queen about it. My friends take it very seriously to the point that they verify ingredients in food more cautiously than I do when I'm around. There's been a few false alarms and a few close calls. I'm very grateful that they take my allergen seriously. I'm quite disappointed that my parents treat it like a non issue and I'm just being picky with my food.
So Cute 🥰
