The minigun confused me at first too. It's actually able to fire rapidly. You just have to hold the fire button down. So basically, fire once to the beat and then it'll start ramping up faster and faster. My first clear of the game was with the minigun and "The Best Defense" shield. (Plus double shot and cleaving) Long story short, that's the most broken gun in the game imo. Edit: I also find the second boss to be the most difficult. He may be slow, but he's less predictable and seems to have no limit to the amount of the homing projectiles that he can have on screen at once. They have really terrible "homing" and sometimes lose track of you and end up getting stuck in corners or something and then when you go to dodge the near insta-death laser from the boss, they'll miraculously regain targeting and come at you from all angles at once.

Should have mentioned this when I first saw the review (the day it was published), but this is the reason I still follow Yahtzee: our preferences might not align on lots of things, but we appreciate the same fundamentals. BPM - for all its jank - is a game that kicks ass, and they continue to add content to it, which surprised me more than anything. Skuld is a character with lifesteal who loses a health every quarter note, and who rewards you for flawless clears even as she pushes you to be extremely reckless. Furthermore, the rifle she starts with is kind of trash but reloads on 1 and scales extremely well with stat boosts.

4:15 For those of you that don't know, holding the fire button on the minigun will spin it up and fire full auto. The minigun is probably the best weapon if you suck at rhythm or when you're getting the hang of doing everything in rhythm.

One thing you may not know about BPM is that some of the models are from an Epic Games project that died when Fortnite started rearing his ugly head called Paragon. They released those art assets (some of my favorite models to date) and they made it into this game. Makes me happy knowing Sevarog lives on as the hardest boss in this game.

Glad to hear someone actually gave the game a positive review. Just didn't expect it to be you. I've shared in your addiction to the game so much, I got a bit of carpal tunnel trying to beat the game with the last Valkyrie on hard, constantly pressing the jump button. And you'll probably like to know, the Minigun can rapid fire. You just have to hold down the shoot button after pressing it down on beat. But using a gun the fires to the beat for you feels wrong and unsatisfactory. So much so that when you need to reload the damn thing you've lost the beat and you lose all sense of momentum, I think I prefer the starting pistol.

Acronyms are a lossy compression, like .jpg files. And like jpeg image files anything you lose, you’ll never get back. It’s up to the viewer to fill in the blanks. I remember one ‘cloud computing company’ decided to coin the phrase “Big Metal” and abbreviate it BM. I think the one thing that the game has a problem with is not explaining a lot of items and their abilities. Like the minigun yatzhee described. It actually seems to be the only gun you have to hold to fire, and it revs up with the beat. It took me forever to figure that out and the game never once gave a hint about it.

I had the additional pleasure of playing BPM: Bullets Per Minute while wearing a haptic vest. You think the 'doof doof doof' in your headphones is good enough, wait till you feel it thudding in your shoulders, chest, and kidneys. I spent multiple hours playing through after booting the game up for the first time. (And after I turned on the 'loose' rhythm option. The regular gameplay is a little too punishing for missing the beat, and I can't even imagine what the 'strict' setting is like.)

yes, but you can only do actions to beat of the music. If you miss a beat, you'll hear an audio prompt that lets you know you missed, and your action wont be completed, as well as losing your score multiplier. Actions include shooting, reloading, and using your character abilities

I will say that the minigun can fire rapidly, however if memory serves (I didn't play for very long, not my cup 'o tea) you had to fire on beat twice then hold down for it to spool up, an odd choice to be sure. On top of that most of the bosses I'd seen before putting the game down were assets bought from Epic (specifically the first boss being the paragon character Sevarog, and the second another character who's name eludes me). This may be true for other enemies too, although I'm not educated on marketplace assets to know as much. Either way a solid game, and a smashing review as always!

@@rr2637 He deemed GoT good with the only flaw being its a sandbox game with sandbox mechanic, which is the most off putting thing, and the multiple choice ending. It can be his Top 5 but 1 is a bit of a stretch. As for Animal Kingdom, it holds more positive than his other "grudgingly okay" purely because of the addiction it has to the player and that you can get the most of doing F- all in the game. Those two however, right now have a far better standing than the games that were released this year and so far.

The minigun is actually the most broken one of them all. You just hold the trigger (on beat) and watch all the enemies explode into tiny bits. The only time I won a run (and last time I played) was when I got the minigun... and maxed all the stats. It's a really neat game! Very lacking in graphic quality, assets (many assets are legally acquired from paid or free sources), music variety and some balancing. But it's the developer's first game so I really liked it and hope they revisit it with updates or a better, more cohesive and fun second game!

After playing a decent amount of BPM I agree with him on almost everything but I do have 2 minor sticking points. A) The minigun isn't actually bad, it's advantage is that you don't have to reload in the middle of a room. Think of it more like an overcompensating pistol. B) I completely disagree about the first boss being the hardest. The second boss of niflheim has a way more complicated pattern and requires some pretty intense choreography to avoid stepping into the rapidly moving damage zones on and above the floor. If anything most of my runs died there. I almost never lost a run to the first boss once I knew what I was doing.
