The fact that millions of ppl are devastated, in shock and mourning clearly- you still decide to be so cold hearted as to say good so that way he won’t vote for Bernie? You summed up exactly how I feel about the person to whom Brooks is responding. At first I sensed she was perhaps being disingenuous; then the tone set in and it became clear she was simply parroting talking points re: Israel & Palestine that she'd heard from others. He handled this like the scalpel that he was, as opposed to all the ham-handed bludgeons in media. edit: god I'm really going to miss hearing his new commentary every morning. D;

@Alex-xp9lu4 жыл бұрын
That’s not always true. Sometimes people like this questioner just need to be exposed to a different interpretation of a situation to realize that they have been backed into a corner with a limited perspective. Most liberal politics (I include including that of many leftists, and conservatives of the neoliberal strain) is informed by a moralistic framework, as a opposed to a materialist framework. The danger of that is that moralism often leads to polemic or absolutist interpretations that are frequently contradictory to one another (i.e. the centuries of oppression experienced by Jews is awful, and therefore we must protect and honor the legacy of the Jewish people at all costs VS the current human rights attrocities committed by the Israeli government in the name of Judaism). Issues like this are “complicated” in the sense that they are purposefully complicated by those who have a low tolerance for moral contridictions, or benefit from them. And the way to approach that, as Michael does so artfully in this segment, is to reframe the argument from an ahistorical, moralistic framework, to a concrete materialist interpretation and appeal from there to the core humanist principles that constructed the original moral dilemma posed in the question.

@metal_ak4 Zionism is just one branch of the curse of right-wing identitarianism of any sort (including economic-focused variants)...of course right-wing religionism is the most visibly unacceptable of them (Likudism, Wahhabism, Christofascism, Hindu Nationalism, the Buddhist extremism that did in the Rohingyas) but they are all insidious. "Transcend and include" was I believe Brooks's motto for continuing the resistance by breaking down so-called barriers like a T-cell breaching a bacterium's cell wall.

It is too sad and horrible that every time Israel tries to make an agreement with the Palestinians they reject it and some of them go out and hurt civilans and soldiers. I'll be happy to make peace with the Palestinians, but they don't want to, at this point I don't know what they even want, and I don't think they know what they want themselves, and still, it makes me sad because I feel that regular people in Gaza who lack electricity and water are punished because of their leaders and the stupid actions of some of them.
