Research shows that air drying can be more damaging than blow-drying. How could this be, right? Well, @BradMondo is calling cap on my recent TikTok and called me out for spreading misinformation, I thought I'd share my reaction and talk about it! Keep watching as I explain all the nitty-gritty scientiffy and share all the facts to back me up, including sharing my own professional perspective on the topic as someone with lived experiences of having curly textured hair as a textured hair specialist. Thank you for sharing your insight and opinion on this one Brad, I think we can respectfully agree to disagree. Also, I’m very aware that Brad’s video was mostly for entertainment purposes, he is great at creating these reaction videos and creating discourse on a variety of hair-related topics, and I think this was really fun! No harm, no foul, no hard feelings Brad! But if you do want to learn more about curly hair...

I caught onto his bullshit when he made a video saying NOBODY needs more than a coin-sized dollop of shampoo to properly clean your hair. I have a very thick head of hair. Just a lot of hair in general. Why do I have to stretch a tiny dollop of shampoo across more hair mass than average?
@1Letter23Numbers.
@1Letter23Numbers. Жыл бұрын
His dollop of shampoo claim was made because he has a line of hair products that are priced like high end products. His 8 oz bottle of shampoo wouldn't last a long time if you had to use more than a dollop and at high end prices it wouldn't be cost effective.
@tymondabrowski12

@@lucarinz4338 I think it might also be because he said himself in one video that he never used a drugstore shampoo, because his parent(s) was/were hairdresser(s), so he always had access to professional products. That + not having to wash ends + possible rarity of your thick, dense hair, might make it more probable that it was true in his experience, even if it's not true in yours and, well, everyone else using standard drugstore shampoos.

Lol! My stylist has curly hair. However he mostly styles straight causcasian /European hair and his hair is type 3. When we first started out he had to learn about my 4c hair, which I absolutely love because he is super cautious not to cause damage while learning. I also think that he would straighten his own hair a lot and he would have it up in a ponytail. Now after 5 years together, his hair is worn down and healthy in the most perfect ringlets. Lol! I wasn't expecting to get my stylist to change their hairstyle but I guess helping me to get my hair into perfect healthy ringlets worn down with pride, encouraged him to do the same. Everyone's hair just as they were born with is naturally beautiful and if they decide to enhance or change that for lifestyle or cosmetic reasons that's beautiful too. As long as it's healthy.

I completely understand. A lot of times, us straight haired folks don't realize the true effort that goes into luscious, curly, happy hair. Makes me so thankful that my curly mom let me fix her hair multiple times during cosmetology, and my curly friends too. I was so thankful that I became good at curly hair. Moisture is key, cut less than you think, and really feel in your client's hair! Curly girls can have multiple curl patterns, so you have to even concoct bleach and color differently depending on the porosity of each curl section. Just to make a few. Oh, and 90% of the time, curly folk are known for THICK hair (both in strand, and in diameter on the scalp), so mix more color/bleach than you think you need, don't be stingy on the leave-in, and please listen to your clients!

I was like no way! And yet she told me I was gonna ruin my hair by dying it at home. I’ve done all my haircuts, big chops and styles at home and people always ask if I got it professionally done. I stopped watching him long ago and it’s annoying how people defend him on things he doesn’t know and him bashing other stylists. I also am a licensed cosmetologist and have curly hair and the things he says are absolutely wrong. There’s a video that he did making a girl with curly hair blonde he fried her hair and used 30 vol. like nooooo you need to go low and slow! and he said I like to go high and quick so it can go blonde fast. Think they ended up shaving her hair short because of the damage.
@andreeaconstantinescu1513
@andreeaconstantinescu1513 2 жыл бұрын
It's one thing for him to be wrong and proven to be wrong which is ok. Regarding the girl, she gave an interview and disagreed with people that bashed him because she wanted a few days of platinum blonde hair because she already intended to shave it off. In her youtube video, she explained that he told her the risks and she was like " I don't care, I'm gonna shave it anyway after". Let's not deviate from curly hair or spread missinformation for the drama and attention.
@e.mysttt
@e.mysttt 2 жыл бұрын
@@andreeaconstantinescu1513 I’m aware of the situation and I’m not deviating. Every hairstylist should know how to properly lift hair to platinum and even he admitted to messing up when placing bleach on the roots first but unless he did a strand test to see how her hair would lighten he shouldn’t have used 30 volumes especially on curly fine hair like hers. You can get platinum with 20 vol and wait longer for it to process. It’s not spreading misinformation. Of course people shouldn’t bash others but also he was being reckless in his application. It would have left her hair in a less compromised state had he follow proper procedures in lightening her hair. Just because she was going to shave it all after doesn’t mean it’s ok to use higher volume in developer. You have to consider the integrity of the hair always.
@andreeaconstantinescu1513
@andreeaconstantinescu1513 2 жыл бұрын
@@e.mysttt then it seems you missed the point of the video then or her reaction video that eexplains it. Like i said, i was interested in seeing people confirm the youtuber's scientific remarks not bring up missinformation. The hair was already fried from before (she admitted) and again she gave him a lose hand. "think they ended up shaving her hair" is again directed as being his fault when in terms he was not the reason. I agree the application and tehnique was not correct but seeing it from objective side, it just wasn't the kind of video made for it. Also, if he was fast, you also don't know if it was her indication because she was rushing or not? The video shows signs of being rushed through her gestures. Still, curly hair was the subject here, not me explaining after watching all the videos from him and her why that happened and why it was so obvious that it was a co joint video for views not for learning.
@e.mysttt
@e.mysttt 2 жыл бұрын
@@andreeaconstantinescu1513 No I didn’t miss the point. If hair is already in a compromised state, then it should be treated more careful and even then strand tested to not be damaged even more. In a salon setting, what he is would not be acceptable. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. I didn’t direct blame to him when I said he shaved her head, that’s just a fact because it happened. I never said it was his fault. She did want it shaved. It was just an example that he is not knowledgeable on curly hair. When people watch his videos, they absolutely look at them to learn sometimes. I’ve also gotten clients that followed tutorials by him when they were just entertainment videos and messed their hair up and there are many stylists that have had similar experiences. He has a massive audience and he spread missinformation and people believe him. Even when a client says I don’t care, take me blonde whatever it takes, you still have to be careful, even if it’s a friend, you can get sued and bad practicing can get your license revoked. You can lose your whole career with mistakes like this. Curly hair is absolutely the subject here and I know what happened and whether it was for view and not for learning, people still believe he has credibility and they believe him when he speaks even about things he is not very knowledgeable about like curly hair.
@andreeaconstantinescu1513
@andreeaconstantinescu1513 2 жыл бұрын
@@e.mysttt again, still missing the point. If the client says to do this, you just do it. Been to expensive and normal salons and as long as you understand the risks, the hair dresser will do it. From personal experience, i've done it more than 4 times because i wanted platinum blonde and just cut it short after. The integrity you speak of is rare and mostly seen it on youtube comments and have dyed my hair constantly for about 17 years and only 2 or 3 times at home. I did not say he is knowledgable in curly hair but it just wasn't the place or time, or video to talk about something unrelated.

Not sure that's why your scalp was on fire. I've been air drying my hair for yeeeaaaars, I blow dry it basically 3-4 times a year. I've never had scalp problems. (But I also don't go to bed with wet hair) Edit: now that I think of it, I also don't apply any products after washing my hair (the only thing I put while my hair is still super wet is argan oil, and that's literally it). It does make sense that having your scalp wet for long while having products on wouldn't be good. Meaning... what I said should be true, it's the products that are the problem (or the product + time combo). But also, unlike I thi k most people, I also towel "dry" my scalp, and it doesn't take too long for it to dry 🤔 Edit#2: now I also remembered that the only time my scalp was actually itchy *was* after blow drying it. And I do it the "Mel way" and low-heat, so idk...

University lecturer and lifelong curly-haired person here. 1. I'm so here for people on social media who make reference to scientific studies in order to support their views. Thank you for doing this response! 2. I am so here for people who have curly hair sharing knowledge on curly hair. I don't even go to a hairdresser anymore because they never know how to handle my curly hair - they either treat it like straight hair or else they offer to straighten it for me (which is more than a little offensive to be honest). I'm 33 and I've never left a hairdresser feeling like my hair looks better than it would've done if I'd styled it myself. 3. I am so here for people who advocate keeping the hairdryer about 15cm away from the hair while blow-drying it with a heat protectant and continuous movement. Anecdotally, I've been doing that since I moved to Scotland in 2016 and could no longer let my hair air-dry like I did when I lived in Africa (because - despite what Brad says - thick, curly hair will take FOREVER to air-dry in a country like Scotland). My hair is so much healthier now.

But the problem is that those two are inseparable! If he doesn’t know how to care for hair then he should not be dying it as it will suffer worse damage without a proper understanding of what to teach clients to do. If my hairstylist didn’t know how to care for bleached and damaged hair my hair would remain damaged because I didn’t know either! Before my recent appointment I thought all my bleach damaged hair needed was shampoo and conditioner and such, but no, I only know how to take care of my hair in its natural state.

Well, to give him a little credit, his comment was actually "no one's walking around with their hair soaking wet all day, every single day”, so I don't think he was targeting those of us who hair takes the whole day to dry, or stays wet all day. I think he literally was saying no one has hair that is soaking wet all the time, 24/7. With that said, I still think it's a very silly statement for him say, and a very ineffective point for his argument. He's talking in absolutes here, along side an unrealistic scenerio. He's basically stating that damage from air drying only ever happens when someones hair is soaking wet 24/7. With this logic, it's as though he feels that if you acknowledge that rediculos scenerio isnt a reality, than that must mean you also then agree that the idea of air drying being damaging to your hair is also not a reality. It's silly

Honestly I haven’t respected Brad mondo as a hairstylist since he bungled his salon dye vs drug store/box dye “experiment”. TLDR he didn’t label the mannequin head and mistook the box for the salon professional and vice versa, saying that the box looked better and didn’t even correct it during editing or mention it at all. Not hate on him and I never discouraged my clients not to watch him when they say they do, I also used to love his reaction videos, I just don’t trust his advice.

@@Mothman_In_a_T-Pose very few licensed hair stylists are as versed in hair science as Mell, and even a modest understanding of that science is not required or necessary for one to become a licensed hair stylist. Most curly-hair specialists I've gone to still primarily follow their CGM training and use styling techniques they find on TikTok. The first one I went to 6 years ago made me read the DevaCurl handbook while she dyed my hair. Not all stylists can be pioneers like our mane girl Mell here, but that doesn't mean they're not sufficiently skilled to handle hair. Their experience in cutting hair is not everything, when it comes to hair care. A person capable of critical thinking, who has simple understanding of science, can be much better informed than a hairstylist. It's impossible to know everything about every hair type and that guy is very cocky, trying to build his authority by underlying years of experience, instead of offering good advice. I don't know why can't he focus on his expertise. On that topic, there are pieces of information that contest Brad's stories about his experience. He's an entertainer, foremost. I've always struggled to find products and routines because her hair was thin and weighed down the curls. Now that they're thickening her curls are forming towards her roots and I'm so excited! I'm researching as much as I can to learn for myself and teach her how to do her own hair. She turns 8 on Friday and is pretty independent already and we just got her a diffuser. 🤞 I have thin, wavy hair so it's all new to me. Can't wait to take this hair journey with her.

This makes so much sense and I never knew about this!! I'm not curly, I have 2A fine, low porosity hair - but I think this is part of what's been causing damage for me for years!!!! I've been mostly air drying for years and I almost always get most of my damage on the lower sections of my hair, like significantly more than on hair on the top sections of my hair. I never put two and two together but it makes so much sense now!! When I air dry my hair it usually takes 6-10 hours(depending on my products used, and the weather etc) to dry and because my hair density is so much more in the lower sections, and my hair is fine and has low porosity the water struggles to evaporate and or/soak into my strands. BUT my hair on the upper sections is usually pretty dry after 40 mins. When growing out my hair my hair on the upper sections always stays much healthier, and then the hair on the lower section starts getting damaged and an exponential rate after a certain point. I know this is most relevant for culry hair people but even i learned something that i think is going to help my hair a lot!!!!

If I have to go to bed in the middle of that? Game over, it'll be wet in the morning. If I braid it wet? That would take a day at least. I cannot imagine curlier hair than mine trying to air dry. IMO the takeaway should be that Brad, like other KZbin videos and creators should be considered entertainment and not educational, with the few exceptions such as this video, which was respectful and well thought out. Amazing info, and thank you for throwing in that tidbit about scalp health with air drying. My hair is going through some STUFF post pardum. Scalp issues being a huge part of it...... Girl, if you could do a post partum special for us curly girls, that would be a huge help. I'm six months out and my hair and what works, what it likes, and what I'm now allergic too 😅😅😅 need all the help I can get. And the hair fall and growing back. It's a wwwhhhooooooolllleeeeeeee situation

the mic drop at the end 😭😂 thank you for this vid Mel, I'm gonna be rethinking my drying routine since I do primarily use air dry and it takes hoursssssss plus the potential damage, so thank you! I'll see how it works for my hair, since the science checks out 😊

Wait, Brad Mondo doesn't understand curly hair? Color me shocked. 😅 But for real, I'm always gonna trust someone who cites their sources over someone who's argument is "come on, that doesn't make sense."

It’s just sad when someone with a lot of following like, Brad Mondo, shares false information without even trying to have a reliable source. I used to air dry all the time and ever since I found you and your tips, my hair feels so much healthier! I really hope there isn’t someone with curly hair, feeling lost and finding his type of misleading curly videos! You always kill it curly queen!

The good thing is, from what I have seem, the majority of the comments on that video is about how he is wrong, so maybe some ppl will read them, do a bit more research, and start to question his advices

I know that Brad has talked about how he isn’t super knowledgeable on curly hair in particular. I think this kind of further proves how curl education isn’t prevalent in the cosmetology world(which needs to change). Come on Brad! Invest in some curl education ✨🥰

But that’s the thing, the education is out there! He just hasn’t taken the time, money or energy to go learn about it. Sad.

Brad Mondo reminds me of about 99% of the hairdressers I've encountered in my life. A hairdresser with NO clue on what to do or how to look after curly hair. Without channels like yours, I'd be so lost! Love your work 💝

Damn, I learned something today. I know keeping your hair wet is terrible for your scalp. Thank you for this video. For a girl that is embracing her natural hair, I needed this.

Mell, I don’t know if you will see this, but thank you for your videos. You are the ONLY one I was able to find, to actually help me with a routine for my curly hair, and to actually break down the steps and products I should be using. When I first looked up hair videos, Brad popped up, and he didn’t help at all with my curly hair. He’s good for reactions, but not exactly for guidance or understanding hair types. I’ve also had several hair dresses do a half ass job, since they don’t know how to handle curly hair. Now I just do it myself thanks to you 😊

Another great video Mel. I’ve been heat drying my hair for over 20 years and even when o was straightening it I took excellent care of my hair and used techniques to prevent damage. I haven’t had split ends or damage in that whole time, whereas when I was air drying before that I did have fluff and split ends. I even coloured my hair for many of those years and my good quality dryer, quality products and techniques have kept my hair very healthy.

I don't know if air drying is damaging for my hair but I can say it's damaging for my cervical spine and neck FOR SURE.
