Jewel was a folk singer and yodeler before she was a popstar, IIRC. That "sound" that's confounding you is the yodeling part.

You gave a really interesting reaction to Jewel. When you talk about multiple voices, mostly you are talking about her yodeling. Most singers use a “head” voice and a “chest “ voice. Most singers use the “head” voice to hit higher notes and the “chest” voice to hit the lower ones. Jewel is an expert at transitioning between the two and also uses it to highlight the rhythm. Her grandfather moved to Alaska from Norway and sang many traditional Scandinavian songs using yodeling so she comes by it naturally. I think she is great and so underrated. Great choice!

That's the thing I love about Jewel and it's what I think makes her so unique! She's not afraid to play around with her voice - and not in a egotistical, "look at what my voice can do", show-off kind of way that several talented vocalists are guilty of doing, but in free-spirited, open ego-free kind of way. Where it's complete expressiveness of oneself over uniformity, or conformity if you want to look at it that way. ;) She'll even tease going off-key and outright scream a line if she feels it that way at any given time. Her total expression of herself will not be denied! And somehow doing all that, she still maintains 100% musicality. And I just love that about her! :)

jewel is known for yodeling This is one thing I miss about the ' 90s there were alot of different musical styles and sounds that became mainstream and the popularity of alot of these artists like Jewel that grew organically through fans supporting them by going to there shows and requesting there songs on the Radio.

The 90s were for sure about more than grunge. 1991 alone has like 20 mega albums. And, yeah...female singer-songwriters in particular started getting play, like Sarah McLachlan (wish they'd do "Building a Mystery"), Lisa Loeb, juliana Hatfield, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, and on and on...

Once you learn your chords you'll start hearing how alot of songs use the same 3 or 4 chords , it just depends on what you do with them.

Jewel is one of the finest singer songwriters of our time. Shortly after she was discovered in a San Diego coffee shop while homeless, she toured with both Neil Young and Bob Dylan who encouraged her to stay true to herself and she has always remained authentic while still managing to sell over 35 million records. She has many hits, mostly from the 1990's, including ... "Foolish Games", "You Were Meant For Me", "Again and Again", "Standing Still", "Intuition", etc. I would actually recommend you react to one of her live performances such as "Hands" kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4Wyk62leb-Ud7c. Great performance, though I've hear "Hands" so many times. Personal favorites of mine are Woodstock '99... she bends her voice to meet the guitar in one song and sings them all VERY differently. And, Stageside live, I love the rapport with the audience and the way she compared her early tone to Kermit the Frog in a self-deprecating but very humorous way. Her brother and dad also come out for her on this one kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ_Gp2averCJjMU Woodstock '99 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p4bJpoJ3jMydrpo just in case you're interested. I couldn't stand her in the 90's, my lady loved her and I gritted my teeth in the car... I lean toward heavier stuff. BUT, she grew a lot from then and became... well... a Jewel!

Oh its so great to have you do this one. Jewel is someone that is hard to define. Wicked Games is one of the best songs ever. Listen to this one. This was the first cassette that I ever had, I was 7 or so. I loved to mimic her with my sad attempt at her voice wobbles.

I'm shocked that nobody has commented on the fact that she also won "The Masked Singer" competition for 2018. She was the Queen of Hearts. She had some impressive performances of other artists songs. She was the best that year.

You guys need to do more Jewel, she's an amazing artist. As a child she won yodeling contests. Her concert material is even better, they really tamed her in the recording studio....concerts you get more of her.

Jewel did an undercover karaoke a while back that was fun to watch. I was born in Jackson, MS, spent most of my life calling Mississippi and Louisiana home.

This was the first song she wrote. She was used to mostly improvising songs with her father. There's a bit of scatting in this song, especially if you see her live. Yodeling also helps her change tone so quickly. Such unique talent!

It's so exciting to see y'all continue to explore these past classics. I was fortunate to hear her live. At first, I was reluctant to see her, but I'm so glad my girlfriend, at the time, convinced me to see her. Still love her and her music. Check out Jewel on Funny or Die karaoke. It's a classic. Another artist my old girlfriend convinced me to see was Dido. She was around about the same time. Different vibe, but still incredible.

Jewel is deep af. She was homeless, and she is as real as they come. Strip away the artifice, and she’s still a girl with her guitar and immensely talented. Love her

I love this reaction! I remember hearing this song on the radio when it came out and I thought "Who the F is this?" because it was such a unique voice. I don't listen to this song often, but it still gives me chills when I do hear it. I'm happy to see it be appreciated by a new generation. You should listen to Shadowboxer by Fiona Apple. It's a great 90s female vocal performance.

Honestly might be the best reaction I've ever seen, just for Brad's face and the confusion growing and growing to the point where Jewel absolutely broke his brain with the huge belt in the last chorus. Brad...Jewel does this to everyone. She also has a yodel. And watch her on an old clip on Letterman singing "You Were Meant For Me", and you will wonder how she doesn't run the world. Seriously...watch that. Jewel with Flea from the Chili Peppers helping on bass...it's...unreal.
