I think what really made the songs on "Bat Out of Hell" sound so great was Todd Rundgren's production. He laid out the arrangements and threw out other parts laying them in the perfect spots on the tracks, and his improv's on the guitar really put an edge in Bat.

This song, "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" all have one genius in common: Jim Steinman. The now late Jim Steinman. His passion, his words, his music, his production... his haunting. Rest in peace, Jim.
@BlackieNuff3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Jim's solo album in 1981 was pretty cool ; to me it's like the "soulmate" second half to Meat Loaf's 1981 album Dead Ringer. Could be cos during that period, Meat had some kind of accident and was on the mend so it delayed them working on the follow-up to Bat. I guess Jim got antsy and couldn't wait, so he did a few songs under his own name ; some of which later appeared on future Meat Loaf albums. I guess that's another reason I consider Jim's album (Bad For Good) to be an extension of the Meat Loaf catalog.
@magicmike71983 жыл бұрын
@@BlackieNuff In that tumultuous period, Meat Loaf lost his voice. You can hear it on the album "Dead Ringer". It's more nasal. A dark moment in his career, forcing Jim to do the vocal duties himself on the album "Bad For Good". His vocal range couldn't do justice to his own song "Surf's Up". So he got Rory Dodd to sing the high notes instead of him. You might already know this but if you don't, go read about Jim's experience on producing Deff Leppard's Hysteria album. A real sitcom.
@BlackieNuff3 жыл бұрын
@@magicmike7198 Awww, I knew I had something wrong. Was Meat out of commission due to his voice? Sounds familiar - why did I think it was cos of a car accident? Unless that was another time? Or another artist? Maybe I just read a crap article? LOL. Yeah, I probably should go back and do some reading cos I obviously forgot gobs of it and have other parts confused. It's been a few years since I first read about it. The Rory Todd thing is new to me, though. Thanks for that, lol. I also had no idea Jim had anything to do with Def Leppard (or their album). Sounds interesting.
@magicmike71983 жыл бұрын
@@BlackieNuff Sorry, i wasn't trying to put you on the spot :) I'm just glad somebody recognizes Jim's contribution. Songwriters are often forgotten. And Jim Steinman was soooo much more than simply a songwriter. When you listen to a Jim Steinman song, as you surely already know, you are entering his amazing, dark and magical universe filled with teenage angts and fiery lust for passion! he did it all on a song. If you ever go back and read some more on the crazy friendship between Jim and Meat, you'll just have a great time! A real sitcom. They should do a movie on them! I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert and me too, my friend, i might be off on some details :) As for Def leppard, he finally gave up on the production of Hysteria. The reasons will make you see the band in a different light. Def Leppard, back then, was really a Mutt Lange creation in a way.

The female singer isnt the lady in the video, although various record companies offered the model a recording contract based on the vocals. The female vocal was done by a female UK singer who happened to be around in the building when the song was being recorded, and did the vocal as a favour. She was never credited. As an asuide, she appeared a couple of years ago on the UK version of the voice, but no one turned. They all though she was great, but didn't know what they could do for her. She was there that day to record something in her own right, but as Meatloaf's singer failed to turn up, she was asked if she'd take up the offer and thank God, she accepted, because she was quite amazing. Warmest greetings to you both from here in the UK. 🙋♂ 🙋♂

The beautiful woman we see in the video is a model Dana Patrick 28 years old at the time who received several offers for record deals even though she was just lip syncing. She was afraid of heights and was quite nervous when the couch rose in the air. She had nothing but good things to say about Meatloaf and what a gentleman he was. They stayed in touch for a few years after the video and eventually drifted apart. She is happily married (no children) and living on the west coast.

It's hard not to be a little jealous of someone getting to hear something so intense and powerful for the first time and getting their reactions to something I grew up with and was such a part of so many peoples high school years

Meat Loaf is credited for fusing theatrical opera w/ rock music. His 1977 album 'Bat out of hell' has sold over 15 million copies in the US. This album 'Bat out of hell Pt. II: Back into hell' in 1993 was a major comeback for the singer after becoming irrelevant in the 80's. R.I.P. to Jim Steinman, the songwriter who wrote 'Bat out of hell' and this record. His songs for Meat Loaf were his biggest hits.

It's easier to explain in an example that Meat Loaf gave in an interview. Here it is, "In a new interview, Meat Loaf finally explains what the "that" is in his most famous song. "It's the line before every chorus," the singer tells Yahoo! Screen. "There's nine of them, I think. 'I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life / I'll do anything for love / But I won't do that.'"" So in that example, he's saying he won't do that or he won't stop dreaming of her every night of his life.

Actually, the whole: "I won't do that" is throughout the song. Every time he said "But I won't do..." then hit the chorus, THAT is what he wouldn't do. Example. "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now Oh no, no way And I would do anything for love But I won't do that, oh No, I won't do that" He won't forget the way she felt atm. Beautiful reaction btw

Great video. I've seen quite a few mentions that people are recommending. I would add (that i haven't yet seen): id lie for you, life is a lemon, everything louder than everything else, out of the frying pan and into the fire, rock n roll dreams come true. Lots more that have been mentioned.

Meatloaf and Jim Steinman made magic together. Having them back together was like two giants teaming up after so long, the song was different from the vibe in 1993. The song and the video just exploded. Michael Bay did the video, btw. Lorraine Crosby did the woman's part, she's an English singer with a huge voice.

You should know this song is off the album Bat Out Of Hell 2, which is probably why the video has some of the aspects you're wondering about. I'm really surprised you weren't asked to do Paradise By The Dashboard Light, from the first Bat Out Of Hell album before doing this song.

Rest in Peace Meat Loaf. This song I remember watching that video on MTV or VH1 when I was a kid. Was kind of mesmerizing. Scary and beautiful. Like Shakespears Sister - Stay. Same thing it scared me a bit but was beautiful haha

Lorainne Crosby is the female vocalist she only received a session fee but did support Meatloaf on European tours numerous times. Also was on The Voice UK - didn't get picked.

As did the director. Michael Bay did that video and Objects. Honestly, Objects is such an incredible music video, one of the best ever made, I reckon. Better than the other dreck Bay directs.

Lorraine Crosby (born 27 November 1960) is an English singer and songwriter. She was the female vocalist on Meat Loaf's 1993 hit single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)". Her debut album, Mrs Loud was released in 2008. Crosby was born in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her father died in a road accident when his car collided with a bus when she was two years old, leaving her mother to raise Lorraine, her two sisters, and one brother. She attended Walker Comprehensive school. She sang in school and church choirs and played the violin in the orchestra but did not start singing professionally until she was 20. Crosby appeared in the first round of BBC's second series of The Voice on 6 April 2013.[11] She failed to progress when she was rejected by all four coaches.
