The song is literal--the lyrics tell you what he won't do: 1. forget the way you feel right now, 2. forgive myself if we don't go all the way, Tonight, 3. do it better then I do it with you, 4. stop dreaming of you every night of my life, 5. see that its time to move on, 6. sooner or later you'll be screwing around.

I think I remember Brad & Lex review Paradise By the Dashboard Lights before. "Bat" or "Two out of Three" would be good for a review... I think what really made the songs on "Bat Out of Hell" sound so great was Todd Rundgren's production. He laid out the arrangements and threw out other parts laying them in the perfect spots on the tracks, and his improv's on the guitar really put an edge in Bat.

Everybody upon first hearing this song asks what "that" is when he tells you in the song what "that" is. The first things he mentions that he won't do is lie to her ("I'll never lie to you and that's a fact") and forget the way she feels right now. You have to really listen to the lyrics and hear what he says he will not do, and that is what "that" is.

There are many videos here on KZbin for you to experience the draw you in storytelling of these musical geniuses. Must concur Paradise by the Dashboard Light & Two out of Three Ain't Bad are songs for you to experience. Your expressions when the singer's voices rumble is priceless. Bob Seger's "Turn the Page" is a great song which lyrically and instrumentally draws you in as well as leaves you with satisfaction after listening. Happy to have stumbled across your channel. ✌

This song, "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", "Holding Out For A Hero" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" all have one genius in common: Jim Steinman. The now late Jim Steinman. His passion, his words, his music, his production... his haunting. Rest in peace, Jim.
@BlackieNuff
@BlackieNuff 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Jim's solo album in 1981 was pretty cool ; to me it's like the "soulmate" second half to Meat Loaf's 1981 album Dead Ringer. Could be cos during that period, Meat had some kind of accident and was on the mend so it delayed them working on the follow-up to Bat. I guess Jim got antsy and couldn't wait, so he did a few songs under his own name ; some of which later appeared on future Meat Loaf albums. I guess that's another reason I consider Jim's album (Bad For Good) to be an extension of the Meat Loaf catalog.
@magicmike7198
@magicmike7198 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackieNuff In that tumultuous period, Meat Loaf lost his voice. You can hear it on the album "Dead Ringer". It's more nasal. A dark moment in his career, forcing Jim to do the vocal duties himself on the album "Bad For Good". His vocal range couldn't do justice to his own song "Surf's Up". So he got Rory Dodd to sing the high notes instead of him. You might already know this but if you don't, go read about Jim's experience on producing Deff Leppard's Hysteria album. A real sitcom.
@BlackieNuff
@BlackieNuff 3 жыл бұрын
@@magicmike7198 Awww, I knew I had something wrong. Was Meat out of commission due to his voice? Sounds familiar - why did I think it was cos of a car accident? Unless that was another time? Or another artist? Maybe I just read a crap article? LOL. Yeah, I probably should go back and do some reading cos I obviously forgot gobs of it and have other parts confused. It's been a few years since I first read about it. The Rory Todd thing is new to me, though. Thanks for that, lol. I also had no idea Jim had anything to do with Def Leppard (or their album). Sounds interesting.
@magicmike7198
@magicmike7198 3 жыл бұрын
@@BlackieNuff Sorry, i wasn't trying to put you on the spot :) I'm just glad somebody recognizes Jim's contribution. Songwriters are often forgotten. And Jim Steinman was soooo much more than simply a songwriter. When you listen to a Jim Steinman song, as you surely already know, you are entering his amazing, dark and magical universe filled with teenage angts and fiery lust for passion! he did it all on a song. If you ever go back and read some more on the crazy friendship between Jim and Meat, you'll just have a great time! A real sitcom. They should do a movie on them! I'm certainly not claiming to be an expert and me too, my friend, i might be off on some details :) As for Def leppard, he finally gave up on the production of Hysteria. The reasons will make you see the band in a different light. Def Leppard, back then, was really a Mutt Lange creation in a way.

2 things - thats edited, the album version is 11+ mins long. The female singer isnt the lady in the video, although various record companies offered the model a recording contract based on the vocals. The female vocal was done by a female UK singer who happened to be around in the building when the song was being recorded, and did the vocal as a favour. She was never credited. As an asuide, she appeared a couple of years ago on the UK version of the voice, but no one turned. They all though she was great, but didn't know what they could do for her. She said it was ok, as she had already been on a number 1 song 20 years ago :)

@@jeffy_k While i agree most lives are not usually the best choice for a first listen for many reasons. I recommended the live that is also the official video. The sound quality is as good as the studio. And this particular song is heavy on rock opera side. And relies alot on visual performance between singers to bring a whole other level to the song that you just can't get with out seeing it. I have heard this song thousands of times over many years until i was sick of it. And not until i saw that performance a couple yrs ago did i gain a whole new appreciation for the song.

If you've enjoyed this short cut-down version, treat yourself to the whole 12 minutes of the album version. :) I just looooooove the dynamics and how late the female voice comes in in that long version. Plus: "Objects in the rear view mirror may appear closer than they are" from the same album, give that a go, too. (And yes, that title is that long.)

Meat Loaf has an epically incredible voice, and composer Jim Steinman (RIP) knew how to write for it. That Voice first captivated me 28 years ago when this banger came out, so it's been my favourite song since I was 6 years old. Still get chills at the piano intro and the opening lyrics. Thank you for reacting to it!

Hey you guys, I just wanted to add something which is largely unknown, the lady singing with him towards the end is not the supermodel in the video (not sure of her name), but the singers name is Lorraine Crosby. She's from Northern England, and she was at the studio when this was being recorded. She was there that day to record something in her own right, but as Meatloaf's singer failed to turn up, she was asked if she'd take up the offer and thank God, she accepted, because she was quite amazing. Warmest greetings to you both from here in the UK. 🙋‍♂ 🙋‍♂

The beautiful woman we see in the video is a model Dana Patrick 28 years old at the time who received several offers for record deals even though she was just lip syncing. She was afraid of heights and was quite nervous when the couch rose in the air. She had nothing but good things to say about Meatloaf and what a gentleman he was. They stayed in touch for a few years after the video and eventually drifted apart. She is happily married (no children) and living on the west coast.

Meatloaf was my very first concert when I was 12- 1994. My Dad got a bunch of free tickets from one of his clients and took us (also how i got to see Van Halen!) I was already obsessed with RHPS at this point, so it was a treat. Cool experience and really kicked off my obsession with live music.

Meat Loaf is credited for fusing theatrical opera w/ rock music. His 1977 album 'Bat out of hell' has sold over 15 million copies in the US. This album 'Bat out of hell Pt. II: Back into hell' in 1993 was a major comeback for the singer after becoming irrelevant in the 80's. R.I.P. to Jim Steinman, the songwriter who wrote 'Bat out of hell' and this record. His songs for Meat Loaf were his biggest hits.

It's easier to explain in an example that Meat Loaf gave in an interview. Here it is, "In a new interview, Meat Loaf finally explains what the "that" is in his most famous song. "It's the line before every chorus," the singer tells Yahoo! Screen. "There's nine of them, I think. 'I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life / I'll do anything for love / But I won't do that.'"" So in that example, he's saying he won't do that or he won't stop dreaming of her every night of his life.
@jasonsmith6795
@jasonsmith6795 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, the whole: "I won't do that" is throughout the song. Every time he said "But I won't do..." then hit the chorus, THAT is what he wouldn't do. Example. "But I'll never forget the way you feel right now Oh no, no way And I would do anything for love But I won't do that, oh No, I won't do that" He won't forget the way she felt atm. Beautiful reaction btw

Meatloaf and Jim Steinman made magic together. Having them back together was like two giants teaming up after so long, the song was different from the vibe in 1993. The song and the video just exploded. Michael Bay did the video, btw. Lorraine Crosby did the woman's part, she's an English singer with a huge voice.

Lorraine Crosby (born 27 November 1960) is an English singer and songwriter. She was the female vocalist on Meat Loaf's 1993 hit single "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)". Her debut album, Mrs Loud was released in 2008. Crosby was born in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her father died in a road accident when his car collided with a bus when she was two years old, leaving her mother to raise Lorraine, her two sisters, and one brother. She attended Walker Comprehensive school. She sang in school and church choirs and played the violin in the orchestra but did not start singing professionally until she was 20. Crosby appeared in the first round of BBC's second series of The Voice on 6 April 2013.[11] She failed to progress when she was rejected by all four coaches.
