1984 I had this EP along with Creeping Death and Blitzkrieg on cassette. This song got me into Metallica in HS. Seeing Lex is like lookin'; in a mirror with a 38 year reflective delay :P

DiamondHead (who wrote this song) recently re-issued Lightning To The Nations, the album quite a few songs Metallica covered are on (Am I Evil, The Prince, Helpless). They also have their own cover of Metallica's No Remorse on that album. Great band who I'm hoping to go see next month.

For "metal musicals" you'll want to seek out concept albums, typically from progressive metal bands. "Operation: Mindcrime" by Queensryche is probably one of the best known. There are a couple "singles" from the album but it definitely deserves a front to back listening to.

It's funny that lex said the intro was orchestral, because it actually is. The intro up until the mini solo transition is Mars, Bringer of war by Holst. There are a few bands that use it in songs.

One of the best riffs in metal :) On the subject of metal musicals, there is a German progressive metal band called Vanden Plas, who did the music for a musical based on Ludus Danielis (The Play of Daniel), where their lead singer played Daniel. I think most of it is up on KZbin, like 'NUMQUID DARI - PARS I - III'.

The intro riff is taken from a classic piece by Gustav Holst from the opening of his "Planets Suite," called "Mars: Bringer of War" . its also where Black Sabath got the idea for their self titled track from. Basically Gustav Holst was the godfather of metal. Oh and yeah Lex = born metalhead no doubt!

If you're looking for a "rock opera" yes, there are. Check out the band Savatage album called "Streets." The entire album is one long story. Each song tells a different part of the tale. I really can't say if you'll like it or not to be honest. It doesn't have that super "chunky" sound like Metallica, but it's still got some REALLY awesome guitar and vocals on it. I love it, but *shrug* that's me. The first time I listened to it, I liked it, but wasn't a "super fan" or anything. THEN I read the CD insert and got a whole new appreciation for it. Some of the songs on that album are really "emotional" if you know the story they're telling. Once you know the story being told, you can connect better and rise and fall with D.T. Jesus. (the main character of the "play") The album wasn't a real commercial success for the band because really...it's just not radio friendly. It's not the sort of album you can just pull a song out of, throw on the radio, and have everyone understand it. You HAVE to "groove along" with the story to really "feel" it.

A few highlights would include : Savatage - STREETS (1991) Savatage - DEAD WINTER DEAD (1995) Savatage - WAKE OF MAGELLAN (1997) W.A.S.P. - THE CRIMSON IDOL (1992) (similar concept to Streets, but with a different outcome) W.A.S.P. - RE-IDOLIZED (2017) (A remake of The Crimson Idol, with new arrangements and extra songs, they way "it was intended to be" - much like how George Lucas went back and redid his original Star Wars trilogy) Trans-Siberian Orchestra - CHRISTMAS EVE & OTHER STORIES* (1996) (Loosely crosses over Savatage's Dead Winter Dead album with one song) Trans-Siberian Orchestra - THE CHRISTMAS ATTIC* Trans-Siberian Orchestra - THE LOST CHRISTMAS EVE* *(collectively known as the Christmas Trilogy) Trans-Siberian Orchestra - BEETHOVEN'S LAST NIGHT Dream Theater - METROPOLIS Part 2 : SCENES FROM A MEMORY (1999) (Metropolis Part 1 is a 9-minute song on the 1992 album Images & Words). Dream Theater - THE ASTONISHING (2016) And pretty much any album from King Diamond. All his albums are full-length concepts, except for 2 where only half the album's songs connect to tell a story (first 3 songs and last song on 1986's Fatal Portrait, last 4 songs on 1995's The Spider's Lullabye).
