Nah. That's just a superficial interpretation, there's much more to it - a kind of deeper level. The song goes beyond just trying to get a message across. It's like a finger pointing to the moon, concentrate on the finger and you're going to miss all that heavenly glory.

Written by Eric Brazillion of the Hooters. A very influential group actually. They (Brazillion and Rob Hyman) worked on Cyndi Lauper's 'She's So Unusual' album. Hyman cowrote Time After Time with Cyndi. Let's not pretend the there isn't something subversive about the song, but I think there are some honest questions there. Check out The Hooters 'All You Zombies'. Excellent video.

@@KyleReeseCel2029 Not sure it’s as much a swipe at Christianity as it is about hypocrisy and religion and just people who consider themselves “good people” in general. The question is, are you treating anyone you meet with respect and love? What if you were judged on how you treat others? Also the interesting question about for maybe those who don’t believe, would you want to find out that God and those kinds of things really DO exist?

Exactly, I always interpreted it similarly to how the word "wretch" is used in Amazing Grace. You would obviously not call a person a wretch or a slob to their face, but the context is important, and in this case, I think the two basically had similar meanings.

It wasn't Jennifer Love Hewitt. The show was "Joan of Arcadia" starring Amber Tamblyn as Joan. Joan has frequent meetings with God, who takes different personas, such as a little girl, an old lady, a butcher, a mime, etc. Joan tries to do as He bids. You are mixing this show up with Hewitt's "Ghost Whisperer" that did NOT use this song as it's theme.

This song made a huge splash on MTV and radio, but Joan had the misfortune of being up for a Grammy for that song the same year Alanis Morisette was nominated for Jagged Little Pill and its phenomenal "You Oughta Know." His ability to instantly see the dark, the suspicious, the suspect, the untruthful in everything is downright disturbing at times -- especially paired with Lex's bright, hopeful, optimistic instincts... which she most often is quick to abandon as soon as she hears Brad's dark take on things. Almost like she's afraid of him -- which is actually what I thought when I first started watching their channel. I had her pegged as a subservient, possibly abused female, the way she watches for his reactions all the time, then is quick to self-deprecate and laugh at herself when he ridicules her. How on Earth he can find this "sacrilegious" is beyond me and I have no idea what his Islamic reference meant...

But I think its how people praise, give unconditional love and admiration to this being they've never met and can't prove even exists, yet we treat our fellowman bad. We judge them, try to avoid them, instead of giving them the same grace we give to whatever God. It's an indictment on religous people who are hypocrites. lol How we give all this love, and basically life to this unseen entity, yet can't do the same with humans we come across and share this planet with.

I've seen several great comments where people have shared what makes this song meaningful to them. Most are pretty different and they're all right. Addressing if it's disrespectful, in my faith we speak to Our Lord as a friend often. He loves a slob as equally as a Bishop. The part that always resonates with me is the "If God had a face....would you wanna see? If seeing meant that you would have to believe?"

And whats interesting is as someone who is in no way religious, I just took it as we should look at every person and treat them like people treat their God. As to say we are all worthy of that same love and admiration. Sort of a flipside of saying "God is in all of us". Because though this may sound blaspehmous, I mean this with no disrespect, as I don't mind people having their personal held beliefs. But most people go by their day passing people, but instead of engaging with them ,we typically judge them, avoid them or at best, ignore them. But ironically in a sense, probably have unconditional love for a God they've never personally met, all while doing everything they can to avoid the next person they can physically see. To put it simply, every person is worthy of the same love and respect we give whatever God we follow and praise. And so we should treat each person as we would God.

Never looked into the meaning of the chorus, but I always assumed that she was singing about... Be careful how you treat others, what if God is one of those "strangers" that you treat like poop one day? I've heard this song a million times since it came out. The show with Jennifer Love Hewitt where she talks to ghosts was called... i think... The Ghost Whisperer or something like that. But I'm not sure this song was its "theme song".

The song has a sweet sentiment. The idea of the holy in everyone and everything, and not as some kind of masquerade. Like actually everyone and everything. Seems trivializing, but it's actually beautiful.

She was the voice, she didn’t write it. It’s really just art. It was about treating people as equals no matter how they present themselves. Or maybe it’s just nothing but words mushed together, art. And the meaning comes from you, the listener.

He just seems for whatever reason he has built his reality inside of this little box. And is absolutely terrfied when he has to peek outside that box for whatever reason. lol It seems, and I could be wrong, he defaults into finding the worst of something. lol It's almost contrarian to a degree. And where he lucked out is he found a partner who fully exists outside that box, and enjoys exploring around.

I've always liked this song as asking real questions about God. After all, the central tenet of Christianity is that God did indeed become one of us, growing up with his folks, working as a carpenter, living a human life until the time was right. To me, that changes everything to know that God has experienced the challenges of human existence.

I just see this as a philosophical song that asks questions about how you would act and react if God walked among us, about how we should treat our neighbours, maybe we should all act like he would and he kind to each other whatever their faith, creed, or background. I do think part of it does suggest that whether we believe in God or are in any way a follower of any religion we should do this. The term God is just the word in the common English vocabulary that could mean any religion, so this could relate to anyone or any faith. I think the line about "maybe only the Pope in Rome" calling God is really just a throwaway line that is really just asking the question how many people these days actually see talking to God as necessary, except the most religious figures, and maybe not even them. It's there really anyone to? I'm not saying people shouldn't do this, but it's just a way of getting your feelings out and processing them, and that in the end following the teachings of the Bible or Qur'an or Torah and being a good person is more important. That's my take on the song anyway.

It is about how everything you thought you knew ends up being the exact opposite of what you though it was. When it comes to the lyrics of “One of Us”, they ask us (the listeners) how we would relate to God if He was just an ordinary person (a slob) just like us

I've always thought it was more, if God could feel what it was like to be a human, with no one praising him or even paying attention to him ("No body calling on the phone"), maybe he would be a little more generous with the sunshine for us down here.

I think thats the beauty of the song. I don't think its inherently religous, but I also don't believe its anti-religious either. It's as simple as saying we should treat people we come across with the same love we give to God, whom we"ve never seen.
