Braided Fishing Line Color - Who Cares? Heresy!!

I pondered the question of using the best braided fishing line color as I started to change out my fishing line at the end of the season and decided to use color to organize. Does the color matter to fish? Heresy! It turns out that it probably does not... the color just turns black the farther it sinks. Given this, I decided to use colors to organize my reels with different breaking strengths of braid matched to different power rods - light, medium, etc. lol... fish do not know what line is. If they will ignore a popping cork, why would seeing line bother them?
Here are a few articles that confirm color does not matter much. Obviously, there is another school of thought on this... but I think that is overthinking the problem. Are you really going to change color when conditions change? You would need a lot of reels/spare spools with different color options to follow that line of thought!

I'm very organized - I keep everything in well rounded stacks so that I can see everything in the well rounded stacks. They are placed in locations on the floor and tabletops. My wife calls them "random piles of stuff" but she doesn't understand organimizating 😂🤣😂

Great idea. I will have to consider that strategy. But I do put a piece of tape with the pound test on my spinning reels. On my fly rods, I mark the underside of the cork handle near the reel with the line weight. Since I also mark the fly line at both ends (the front end so I can check the line weight readily and the back end so I can tell what it is when I have taken the line off the reel and put on a plastic spool), I can make sure I put 8-wt. line on a rod for 8-wt. or 4-wt. line on a 4-wt. rod. Once in Louisiana, I put a reel with 8-wt. line on a 10-wt. the same color as the 8-wt. I thought I was getting ready to use. After several minutes of sub-par casts, I changed to a 9-wt. I did not figure out my mistake until after the trip was over. Rats.

I put a sharpie line - 1 for each wt - at the front of my fly line. I wish the manufacturers would make it easier for us!

You are definitely “Organized” if you have color coded your lines by rod type. I’ve also read about the fact fish don’t care about line color. I’ve also wondered if float color on a pompano rig makes a difference I definitely know here in Pensacola Florida they love the combo Pink orange and yellow on a float ad I have lots of marks on them where they gnawed on them. Anyway I’m going to check out the cheaper line if it’s that’s much cheaper

Interesting comment on the floats. I have had trout hit my indicator when fly fishing. I typically use orange... just like the pompano seem to like.

Since I mostly fish brown water, I didn't figure any color matters. Yellow and brown is still brown.

Color can matter some. In shallow water less than 25 feet all colors display the same. But beyond 25 feet colors start dropping off the visible spectrum and red is the first to go. That's why so many things are red and the deeper you go the more red you see under full spectrum lights. That's because it makes the fish, shrimp, crabs and the like nearly impossible to be seen by things that want to eat them or by things they want to eat. Now that doesn't really answer the question of line color and spooking fish in sub 25 foot depths. I'm not aware of any studies on this beyond antidotal evidence, might have to look for some.

I fish on sport boats and bright braided lines are best so you don’t lose sight of your line as you fly line a live bait then tangle everybody else
