The biggest issue with adhd isn't the inability to do stuff normally but rather how others treat you while you attempt to do them.

Well said, I'm 45 and have been struggling with that dynamic for as long as I can remember. I love how you were able to describe and verbalize the struggle. I do "normal" on my own terms. Over time, I have been able to ignore and completely disconnect from the scrutiny, advice, critique, undermining, of all the know it all, "normal" people I surround myself with. There are many roads leading to the same destination.👍

I have ADHD and I'm always late, I get distracted or I misjudge the time something will take and how much time I have left or how many margins I need. Normally, I try not to plan any deadline-appointments in the first place, so I never get in trouble that way, but depending on the day, the people, the situation, it can still end badly. I've had a craftsteacher punish me for being late, by giving me the dirtiest chair, the broken paintbrush, no biscuit at teabreak and no proper waterglass for the paint. She kept repeating to everyone (first time I followed the workshop, so this was my introduction) "Now now girls, let's not feel bad for her, she put this on herself, by being late, this is her punishment." At the end of the workshop, I politely informed her that I was not going to return. She was confused and asked why. I answered; Because I am 22 and I paid for an artclass, not to be humiliated in front of peers." My intention had been to make friends there, well, that went out of the window. People have driven off for a picknick without me in the car, because I was one minute late and they wanted to teach me a lesson. Literally walked over to the car, but as soon as it went "14:06" they screamed: "its been 5 past 2, you're too late!" And drove off. We'd planned that picknick for a month, it was ridiculous. And they say there's something wrong with me...

I love how a girl without ADHD is getting so much praise for “attempting to demonstrate” what it’s like. She’s literally not doing anything exceptional and yet she’s getting so much encouragement, and yet children and adults who actually suffer with this every single day get ripped to shreds for struggling.

F**KING BINGO, DAMNIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😠😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I'm 21, and I was diagnosed with sever Combined-Type ADHD when I was 6, and was put on medication when I was 8 or 9. Let's just say that doing my research for a recent Psychology project made me realize that nearly everything I've struggled with and gotten punished/grounded/yelled at for isn't my fault and never has been!!! Yet my parents think I'm supposed to be 100% responsible for my decisions and constant screw-ups; And I can't tell them that 95. 5% of the time, it's not ME, it's my ADHD, because they're always like, "Stop using your disorder as an excuse," Right. Because I like to hyperfixate on the wrong thing at the wrong time, or procrastinate on a boring assignment that's due in two weeks, or always have people hovering over me, reminding me exasperatedly to do this, or not do that, etc., etc.

Right!! The shit I got all my life for not being able to carry out tasks the same as my peers is so frustrating. At the time I wasn’t diagnosed but there was clearly something wrong that nobody addressed. Just told me to “manage your time,” “just get it done,” “focus,” “how could you forget (xyz),” etc. As accurate as the locker demo was, I can’t understand why they couldn’t have a kid with adhd to do it,, or just,, idk have someone with adhd there to make the way they spoke about us here less “othered(?)”

ikr??? I get they're trying to understand us, but your gonna have a person without adhd... demonstrate what adhd is like... how does that make sense? they'd rather have a child attempt to mimic us than actually getting a kid with adhd on there. instead of listening to adhd voices they do this

@@samc5602 I feel that 😫 You’re not alone. It affects so many aspects of our lives, but it’s so misunderstood by the general population and some people think it doesn’t even exist. It’s so hard to explain executive dysfunction to someone who’s never experienced it. I always tell people about an experiment where researchers removed rats ability to produce dopamine. The rats experienced pleasure when food was placed in their mouths but, when food was placed just a sort distance away, they would starve to death, unable to find the motivation to walk over to the food. It’s the only way I’ve found to get the point across to someone who keeps repeating things like “no one wants to work, but we just do it.” They finally start to realize that they’re really lucky to have brains that produce chemicals correctly.

I don't think that the brain is "just immature in some parts" in ADHD. It might just be oversimplified, but saying it that way makes it sound like it's something that is just a delay in children and they will grow out of. Adults have ADHD. Children with ADHD grow up to be adults with ADHD. It can sometimes look a bit different in adults, but it is still a very real condition that affects many aspects of life, and can require therapy, accomodations, and medication. They don't just need to grow up and mature.
@austinthefreak
@austinthefreak 2 жыл бұрын
But it IS a delay, it just plateaus at a lower level of maturation than the neurotypical brain. So it is stays "immature" throughout adulthood. Since the topic at hand was about ADHD children specifically, I think it's understandable that he didn't get into those details. He had a very limited amount of time to get his point out there.
@sassikatt
@sassikatt Жыл бұрын
@@austinthefreak It isn't a delay, it's a dysfunction of the Executive Function part of the brain. The brain is not delayed, it cannot function in a specific area of the brain. Absolutely correct. I live with ADHD as an adult. It is a very real brain condition, it affects Executive Function and it's not a delay or immaturity of the brain. You are very correct that it requires therapy, accommodations and medication.
@austinthefreak
@austinthefreak Жыл бұрын
@Beverley I think you have more to learn on this subject, or there's a miscommunication somewhere. All children are born with a very low level of executive functioning, because their brains are not very developed. As they grow older, their brains develop, and their executive functioning improves. This is true for children with ADHD as well. But because ADHD children have an impairment in that part of the brain, their executive functioning "matures" at a delayed rate compared to other children of the same age. According to Dr. Russell Barkley, this delayed maturation of executive functioning continues into the mid teens, then plateaus. This is unlike the neurotypical brain, which continues to develop executive functioning at a relatively consistent rate through the person's 20s. So yes, the part of the brain that controls executive functioning is literally "immature" in an ADHD brain compared to a neurotypical brain of the same age. When someone uses that word in this context, they're not hurling insults at us. They're just using scientifically correct language (which can feel cold at times).

The only problem with adhd is that people think we have to conform to their way of thinking. We’re brilliant and able to connect concepts others don’t. We think 4x faster than “normies”. Also that’s not a mess, it’s organized chaos and we know exactly where everything is.

Sorry, but that's utter nonsense, and you are trivialising a serious mental health disorder. The forgetfulness, the racing thoughts, the inability to stay focused on tasks, the emotional dysregulation and the impulsiveness are all serious impairments. So, how on earth do you go about saying ADHD isn't a 'problem?' ...And actually I don't "know exactly where everything is!" I was just recently diagnosed with adult ADHD. I’d previously always waved off ADHD as no big deal, just an excuse for people to behave poorly. Simultaneously, I just believed that my struggles through life were just because I was a loser, a bad person. I always joked that my brain was like an old radio being dialed back and forth wildly. Mariachi, then Jesus radio, then pop music, classical, talk radio, back to the classical, now the BBC, so on and so on. And sense of direction? Forget it. I’d not only forget where I was going, I’d forget that I was even going somewhere period. I’d just wander. My spacial awareness was off too. I literally ran into the side of doors, catching my sleeves on doorknobs. Behavioral therapy has since changed my life. I may still be a loser, but I can accomplish more now🤣. I’m still very ADHD, and that’s okay. I’m learning how to navigate life a little more successfully.

I was never diagnosed with ADHD, but it's incredibly frustrating when I get bombarded with information while having a thought. It riggers my anger. It seems like it never fails when I am trying to focus on a thought, I get bombarded with information, and while I am trying to sort everything I just get frustrated because eventually it just blends into a pool of noise and I lose focus on my initial thought. Then I have to start my thought all over again, and then get in trouble, because I didn't get something done.

I have ADHD predominantly inattentive and we are not normal. We have an issue with our brain. When he said "Like the rest of us" it was in no way implying that we are of less value or not capable. I cannot stand when people get "triggered" because life will not conform to your egocentric belief that certain words and phrases are not okay. There will always be words that will become offensive because people choose to take it the wrong way or assholes using it to talk down to a group of people. As far as I am concerned in order to think you have to risk being offensive. Anything can be interpreted in an offensive manner. I am assuming you live in the United States like myself if so that is the reason we have freedom of speech. You can say anything to always be able to voice your opinion no matter how unpopular it is. You have people who hate the government and want to change it that can speak out. You have preachers. You have Liberals, conservatives, socialists and libertarian that can all voice their opinion. With free speech comes assholes who are racists, bigots, holocaust deniers, and whatnot. Without unpopular voices we may have just been a world full of social darwinist beliefs. Look at Africa. Just recently historically speaking we have stopped the disgusting treatment there. Europe had claimed Africa to be full of savages and they made it "civilized". Don't get offended because he was obviously trying not to be. He is spreading awareness.

Considering the amount of people in the comment section saying the same thing, maybe it wasn't as obvious as you thought it was, and as you said, it's okay for them to voice that if they felt that way. So you don't get offended by other people getting offended by other stuff and try to suppress their voice. Speaking of egocentric... :D You're right though, you definitely have an issue with your brain, but it's hardly because of inattentive ADD.

But my favorite way to describe ADHD is that we are “Ferrari’s with bicycle brakes”. But all that I’m saying is that don’t start to tell someone what ADHD is like unless you have it.

Thats why now working at a school I do my best to encourage my adhd students that they are SMART and very IMPORTANT in this world. I was really self conscious of my body and having to do workouts in front of someone else silently was really uncomfortable for me. I'd occasionally forget to do the exercises at home and didn't eat as healthily as i should've which was bad on my part but i felt like overall it was way too much money than it was worth, i felt bad about my mom paying for it and tried to hint to her that it wasn't a good idea. It felt like way too much money for some workouts, being spun in a chair, and identifying smells. the atmosphere was so awkward and quiet which made me wanna go even less. In the end nothing really improved for me. And honestly I felt really bad that I wasted my moms money by nothing really improving but after seeing comments from other brain balance videos i feel better about it knowing that i wasnt the only one who saw no improvement

The adult version of this is my old grocery store boss trying to get me fired & belittling me with too many tasks on purpose so she can let me go knowing I'd be overwhelmed. Luckily, my manager just below her position defended me & sensed I was smart, just a lil different. 6 months later, I went from working slow & having anxiety attacks everyday to being asked by 3 other department managers to switch to their department and even being offered a potential position as a manager after about a year. Everyone wanted me. I was still somewhat slower but eventually you hyperfocus/understand things in a deeper way than most people. Because of me our department went from a mess to being super clean/organized. I couldn't sit still, so I was always needing to do something so eventually my co-workers started asking me for tasks/guidance instead cuz I always found something to do and when I did things, I did it right with an attention to detail. Thou, once I was praised by many at my job. I got bored, felt empty and so irritable I suddenly did a no-show but my manager was nice enough to let me go nicely with no hard feelings. He said everyone knew my heart wasn't in it anymore. Welcome to ADHD.🤣 It's both a weakness it can feel at times, but it's also a huge blessing. I try to manage it better now, but I also understand it's huge strengths!

I remember reading a book when I was younger and still undiagnosed, and a mind reading character described the thoughts of another character “rushing like a river” and I remember thinking “wait... that isn’t a normal speed?” That was one of my first hints I actually noticed pointing to glaringly obvious ADHD

In Poland there is a saying for someone who is daydreaming, that they are „thinking about blue almonds”. Once when I was in second grade my teacher told me to stop thinking about blue almonds, she meant I should stop daydreaming and focus. But I didn’t know that saying yet because I was a child, so for the rest of the the class I was thinking: why did she say blue almonds, are they real, could you possibly eat them, are they growing like regular almonds etc. 😂

I have A.D.D and I just remembered this thing that happened when I was 12 (15 now) and this guy was talking to this big crowd in a video game and lots of people were moving and they had brightly colored equipment and it was a jumble of color and speech and jumping and everybody pushed each other and this guy called me names and got mad because I accidentally pushed him he kept on trying to duel with me spamming it and I got so overwhelmed and mad and sad and I got really frustrated I started hyperventilating and crying my heart started pumping like crazy and my chest felt like it had 20 pounds of pressure just pushing on it and I just got so overwhelmed and I had two friends who knew I had A.D.D and one friend tried to cheer me up but I ignored him and all the thoughts of the noises ( it was a fighting game and lots of people spammed attacks so it was loud ) and people jumping and the insults came racing around in my mind I got so panicked. I don't know why I typed this, I just thought of it randomly.

Hey here’s some fun things I found about adhd, You learn to be a wonderful multitasker! After learning you’re strengths and weaknesses in daily life, you start to pick up behaviors to properly maintain your schedule. One of those things is multitasking. So after a while, it becomes one of your strong points.

My issue is he’s talking about a condition he doesn’t have, demonstrating ‘what it’s like’ with a child that doesn’t have ADHD. Why are NTs a more reliable source than someone who actually has the condition? Why not talk to an actual ADHD person about their personal experience, listen to what they say, and BELIEVE THEM!

I actually remember attending brain balance when I want young and it really helped. You can’t grow out of ADHD (as far as I’m aware) but I have a much better grip on things nowadays then as a kid. I used to be terrible with reading and writing (possibly a little dyslexic but we never got it confirmed) now I take AP writing classes and excel at reading comprehension. These guys know their stuff!

Does anyone have ideas of how to apply the same type of training as the headset, armband, etc for young adults in college with ADHD? Such as ways to organize things, routines, etc. I have the WH-1000XM2 headphones which can simulate sound coming from the left or right, so this seems like something I could kind of apply and see if anything improves through experimentation

No one trait can truly *define* anybody, though it can be used to *describe* somebody. I kind of see that ADHD describes me the same way having brown hair describes me. I refer to myself as ADHD the same way I would refer to myself as brunette. It's a part of me but it's not the whole picture. I get what OP means though, ADHD needs a new name. I much prefer the term "neurodivergent" as opposed to "disordered." Having an "Attention Disorder" encompasses so little of what this neurodivergence entails (such as... overwhelming emotions, reward-driven learning, insomnia, intrusive thoughts, heightened empathy and so on... smh DSM, do better😒). It is unfortunate, that this is the name we have to use so that we get the help we need. God willing, we'll soon live in world where we don't need to be perceived as disordered to receive help. We just have to be perceived as having different needs which is 1000 times closer to the truth. P.S. The symptoms I listed in the parentheses may not all be experienced by all who have ADHD. We may experience some of them or all of them to different degrees. Every case is unique. :)

This is a very good demonstration but I have issues with the way it was explained. Firstly ADHD is not just about parts of the brain that are immature, some part are underdeveloped but the way it was phrases was as if simple training could mature the brain up to a "normal standard" secondly adults have ADHD and don't grow out of it! As an adult with ADHD it's painful to hear over and over "children with ADHD" when those children grow up into adults with ADHD but because it's only thought of in this way there's very little support after you leave school and few people understand. Thirdly he could have mentioned the dysregulation that comes with ADHD and other aspects as people think it's just a problem with attention but I understand there might not have been the time

I've seen a lot of kids say they're afraid to tell their parents they think they have adhd. As a parent I'd be happy to hear a child out. School often told me "X didn't pay attention, is easily distracted" then would go on to tell me "all kids are like this". Having no other experience I took their word for it. I wish I hadn't. I wish I'd done something sooner. Kids naturally find other people easier to talk to at times, so either find someone your comfortable with, or just try to be brave, find a time when your parents arent distracted or overly busy and just say "hey, there's something I really need to talk to you about. It's taken a lot of courage for me to do this so please hear me out. I'm concerned I may have adhd because..." and most of all let them know if you're struggling (which you likely are). Might feel hard but give it a try, don't let it go if you really feel something isn't right. Good luck 🤞
