I love that there exists a mutually beneficial, symbiotic relationship between these small, brave birds and the giant, battle hardened Crocodiles, that between them, they make up for each other's faults. The Dikkop birds benefit from the protection and incubation that comes from laying their MUCH smaller, more fragile eggs in the Crocodile nest, and the Crocodiles benefits by having a pseudo warning system and minor distraction if something tries to invade the nest. These relationships that have evolved over the years really are fascinating to see. :)

It’s super interesting seeing two animals manage to get along and find an agreement to benefit one another. Groupers and octopi, coyotes and badgers, crocodiles and these birds, moray eels and shrimp, cleaner wrasse and many different fish, etc. there’s something beautiful about nature managing to be peaceful for once. Of course even symbiotic relationships can run fowl (if a croc eats the birds or something), but in most cases it seems like the animals genuinely understand the terms and boundaries they agree to with other species in these relationships.

@tiredtypes12605 жыл бұрын

yes, seems birds are more on the look out, but when something dangerous comes along they call and croc answers. Crocs typically ignore birds most of the time, too agile to be prey, birds in return are typically not too wary about crocs, birds are far more defensive when around some mammalian carnivores. Crocs do a lot better when dealing with mammalian carnivores. Sadly for birds; crocs dont cover as much range as they do or as mammals.
