I read the comments from mine and younger generations. I had this song in existence for 90% of my life. I had heard it hundreds of times. A month ago, I passed over it. Then, a couple of weeks ago, it got in my head after I woke. So I had to play it. I fell in love with this song. I'm 61.

I was 5 in 1972. I have liked Bread for as long as I can remember. This song takes me back to the early 1970’s every time. Someone once told me I was born 20 years too late. Maybe so.

I discovered Bread on a rainy Sunday night, I was 19 and heartbroken for several months. While driving my car, I was thinking about love and life, trying to find answers. On the radio, there was this one-hour special on the band. I didn't really know the songs, or maybe I did, but they sounded quite familiar. Their softness, their melancholy, their musical perfection - Gates' voice is clearly the band's trademark - touched me to the deepest of my soul (exactly where it hurts). I remember that evening as one of the most profound. The next day, I ordered from Columbia House Bread's Anthology on CD. Several weeks later, after learning my favorites Bread songs on the guitar, I read that David Gates was born on December 11th, like me. That Sunday night, Bread's music made me realize something I never wanted to hear before : it made me realize that I am a musician.

Robb is still very much with us, and he did appear on the bands first 3 albums, and participated in many of the hits, so he certainly contributed significantly to their success. Interestingly, Larry also appeared on an equal number of albums - but folk tend to oversee the even balance between the Royer/Knechtel years !

This haunting song with simple but telling lyrics is about the life of a musician and his relationship with his fans. Bread’s frontman David Gates stated : “James [Griffin] went out and tried to play a solo that wasn’t sounding right […]. Larry [Knechtel] plays a little guitar, so I asked him to try it. He hooked up a little wah-wah pedal and came up with all those things on the spot. I bet that wasn’t more than two hours of work on his part.” At the end of “Guitar Man” (1972), there is a recording of a crowd yelling after an announcer introduces Jim Morrison at a Doors concert. As such, “Guitar Man” was left as the lone album by the band without a top-10 hit amongst its track listing. 💙🎸💚

As you probably know, David Gates wrote most, if not all the songs he sings. As such, he being the songwriter knows the exact sound he was looking for and Larry (RIP) produced it for him. Excellent all round!

Sometimes things are meant to be, the lyrics, the voice, I bought the cassette on a Friday and I’m ashamed to say I can’t remember the album, but I picked up my then gf at the time and we went to the coast, watched the lights and put this on repeat, it was magical, the only other guys vocals put in high esteem (ok their may be others, but men so much to me is Gerry Rafferty, right till he died a good few years ago, silky smooth, no effort and just a lilt that resonated with me) thank you bread and David.

Who draws the crowd and plays so loud Baby it's the guitar man Who's gonna steal the show You know, baby, it's the guitar man He can make you love He can make you cry He will bring you down Then he'll get you high Somethin' keeps him goin' Miles and miles a day To find another place to play Night after night who treats you right Baby, it's the guitar man Who's on the radio You go listen to the guitar man Then he comes to town And you see his face And you think you might Like to take his place Somethin' keeps him driftin' Miles and miles away Searchin' for the songs to play Then you listen to the music And you like to sing along You want to get the meaning Out of each and every song Then you find yourself a message And some words to call your own And take them home He can make you love He can get you high He will bring you down Then he'll make you cry Somethin' keeps him movin' But no one seems to know What it is that makes him go Then the lights begin to flicker And the sound is getting dim The voice begins to falter And the crowds are getting thin But he never seems to notice He's just got to find Another place to play Fade away Got to play Fade away Got to play Fonte: LyricFind Compositores: David Gates

"What do we call this band?", asked someone as a bread truck rolled by. True story. But it always was the David Gates Band since the producers had little interest in promoting Griffin's rockabilly contributions (see the completely un-Bread-like Side 2 of their "Best of" compilation). Gates' magic formula for sappy hits was only matched by Barry Manilow, but Guitar Man is in a special category of sincere 70s ballads lamenting a life on tour by homesick young artists (e.g., Seger's Turn the Page, Elton's Rocket Man, Browne's Running on Empty, etc.)
