The person who said this beautiful song was “cheesy”, knows nothing about music.

It is a song that celebrates how wonderful Gates' father was to him while at the same time, it sobs because he has lost him. Peace out.

Had a coworker whose young boy died at daycare. He was only like 4 yrs old. I went to the visitation and they played this song. Between this song and that tiny casket, I just broke down, even though I'd never met the boy and was nothing beyond a coworker with his dad. When I got home and saw my little girls, I lost it again. And I gotta be honest, I don't cry often, but that day wrecked me.

Beautiful song. The really great thing about this song is it's not just another breakup song. There are a million of those. These lyrics could be interpreted as a breakup or someone dying, and yeah it's about his father passing away. For me I think of my dad who died when I was 10. I was very close to him.

I think it was Amy Lee that said its a sad song but it's a cheesy song. The song is about him wanting to give everything he owned to have his father back one last time. It is a song as a tribute to his father that died. Not so cheesy.

I remember watching an interview with David Gates about this song. While it was about his Dad, he wrote the song in a way that it could be taken by other people as about a past relationship. So more people could relate to the song . I'm paraphrasing, but the interview was something like that.

Lost my father 2 years ago. It's tough to hear this song. I've always loved it, but it hits me so hard since my father's passing.

Bread was a notable band. At their best, they were downright inspirational. While Guitar Man remains their best song, they actually had a neat little rock n roll hit - Mother Freedom, which is also worthy of a listen.

Arguably, some of the best songs can be interpreted many ways. Those of us that know the back story, that it's an ode to his father, well, we know, for whatever reason. But while there are hints, as Vin pointed out, there is no explicit that prevents from being about a good friend or lover, even a pet. Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel No 2" is a classic example of this. Most people, including myself, saw it as a love tome to Janice Joplin. I mean, that's how it's written. But in an interview with him not long before he passed, he said he wrote it because he was mad at her for taking what he considered the easy way out... "But you got away, didn't you, baby? You just threw it all to the crowd You got away, they can't pay you now For making your sweet little song"

Certainly not of the Metallica ilk, but it's good sometimes to bring it down a notch once in a while. In this case, very good. One of many classic 70's Bread songs.

Songs like this serve a purpose. Not so good as a get in the car and drive song. It's a grieving song. Its so important to go through the grieving process. My dad died a few months ago. I had him in my life for 55 years. I was able to tell him how much he meant to me but there's still a part of me that wonders if he really knew. I didn't cry when I got the call. About a week ago, I was watching another reaction channel reacting to this song and the first thing I saw was a comment that explained that the song was the singer's memorial to his dad. I'd heard this song my whole life and didn't know this. Always thought of it as a romance breakup song. The first lines hit me very hard. "You sheltered me from harm. Kept me warm." "The finest days I ever knew were all the days I spent with you." I finally really cried over losing my dad. It took a song. Maybe if you didn't have a good parent-child relationship with a parent that you've lost, you just don't get it.

When the first response to a beautiful, but simple song is "Cheesy" told me he's one of those that likes to put on an act, of having a tough exterior! But his childish rant about his own mother; who isn't hear to defend herself, and what the son was like, speaks volumes! Really bad reaction, which wasn't well thought out.

Some channels let you block but sadly this one doesn’t. Dude talking to her in the beginning of this song… seemingly already waiting for the song to end was a giveaway to how pointless of a click this was. The rest of this “reaction” follows with the same. I actually liked this couple’s reactions back when she loved Pearl Jam’s “Black” and dude got back door jealous of what she said about Eddie’s vocal performance. In the very least it was interesting. To be this nonchalant at the easiest “job” in the world (reacting on platforms) is pointless and a waste of everyone’s time.

Yeah, after 1 year a reaction. Cheesy? He is singing about his dad who passed. Would a macho song be better with a loaded gun? But hey, in this world human often pretend as if they own this globe and can do whatever they like. So why would/should one with common sence feel sad when the powers of nature hit and destroyed all their goods and life. Human (as a label) to seperate these from mammals shows so many times that those on two legs are the worst and a treath to the environement. Yet, this globe will continue spinning around even after nuclear bombs no matter what.
