the strange thing is that federations are run like clubs and players like business entities rather than federations representing an underlying club culture in a country, they are like clubs themselves which is not normal in other sports for instance, it had no real impact in Messi's private career to play for Argentina despite having dual citizenship and playing in Spain since he was 13 until his 30s - perhaps he would have won more in non-club tournaments for Spain but it didn't impact him beyond that, as it shouldn't in chess for some reason not being federated prevents you from accessing important tournaments and membership is used to push players to represent other countries in exchange of benefits that should be accessible to them anyway this has created a mercenary figure in country/federation representation that is unpalatable to a lot of people and arguably very unfair

Finally someone said it why Arjun doesn’t get invites. Although I am Indian and want to see Arjun playing top tournaments, it’s wrong to say Arjun not having invites to 4-5 top events this year is unfair.
@LunnarisLP6 ай бұрын
I mean most of last year he was "low" rated in comparison to top GMs after he dropped rating holding just barely above 2700. Right now there are 32 players above 2700 rating, so naturally you cant invite every 2700 player. And tournaments are planned ahead of time, especially these days, where securtiy concepts have to be more sophisticated compared to maybe 20 years ago. I dont work in the business, but I could see many hosts planning these tournaments 6-8 months ahead of time. So yeah I think the tournaments that are being planned right now will be much more likely to give him an invite. But even given all those things I think it is a reasonable thing to invite players who have played for a long time and been to the tournament often as well. You know the fans want to see them. Talking people like MVL or Grischuk for example to give some examples. We can argue that it is unfair that they get invited if they are ranked lower, but at the same time one can argue that it would be unfair not to invite them given the fact someone like MVL has showed us top level chess for a decade just because they are now rated 15-20 points lower.

@santeriojanen84796 ай бұрын
The event was badly organized. The clock should have just went on. The first match would have been gone with the tilt. And then if rules allow Hikaru could have played the second. What is blinding in this internet era is that there is lot of love/hate thing going on. Hikaru seems to have many haters, and their agenda on this seems to lean on that . I like both players. Hikaru approved the extended break (which shouldn't have really happened in my opinion) so that should have been it. He shouldn't have returned to issue , but then again he went to tilt. Like Fabi says people behave sometimes also in chess world in horrible ways (as in life tends to be the case) I think Alireza really was going to really give the match away. They should have more clearer rules on can you ask more time ? This version where player goes time or I ain't playing is strange. Mess of an event really.

Fabi likely has to see Hikaru at some point at tournaments and would probably prefer to maintain at least a cordial relationship with him, while Cristian (as far as I understand it, never watched it myself) commentates on Hikaru's Kick channel or something like that (so also has an interest in not souring that relationship). Even if they wanted to talk about it, there's not much to say really. Obviously Hikaru didn't behave very professionally in lashing out, but that's about all there is to say about it.

I think I have a problem with a player who plays in the Olympiad for a different country every two years and ends up having played for five or six countries. That doesn't feel like representing "your" country to me. So I'd want some restriction on changing federations to stop players doing that and to stop federations spending a lot of money to collect the best players even if they have no connection to your country. I could easily see a UAE or Saudi prince getting into chess and just offering top players large amounts of money to represent the prince's country, and then that "super-team" could be very competitive in the Olympiad. That wouldn't be good for chess. I don't know how to allow for the many legitimate cases while stopping that sort of illegitimate case, but that's why I'm not a member of the FIDE council; that's the sort of thing they are supposed to think about.

my 5c´s regarding federation switching: When you switch federations to play for another country you should have the nationality of the country you are representing. The possibility to switch federations and represent the country without changing nationalities or having lived for a long duration in a country (esp w/junior players) is where chess differs from other sports. It is also silly that in the case that you change nationality that you cannot play for your country without changing your federations. And in the case of top players you also have to pay a significant fee. The system is flawed, or at best not really well explainable for people outside of the chess world.

The topic being discussed are almost always too old events when you release the podcast and with you guys having absolutely no balls, you just barely talk real stuff, you're just doing late journalism. Seems fabi doesn't have time for this when he is trying to be the best chess player, he doesn't look very focused.
